"Where would she be confident of winning as an MP in England?"

Assuming the Tories wanted her, still plenty of 'safe' seats.

Any more exposure and she might be as popular as NS in parts of England!

According to one previously undecided listener on the Radio Scotland phone in, he is now voting Out due to Ruth shouting and butting in during last night's debate.

Seems a pretty crazy reason for making your mind up, but hey...

Right, I'm off to phone the one person who I know is voting Leave and whose conversation I can tolerate for a last take on this vile, disheartening and unwelcome affair.

Ah, Romania. Did you know that Romanians are abandoning their children for long periods of time so that they can work in the richer countries? Not sure what Romania is getting out of it apart from another generation of messed up children. Oh well, so long as we get cheap workers to boost our economy eh?

And I have never been able to work out how cheap and easy travel around Europe is good for the environment either.

On another message board of which I am a member there is discussion surrounding peoples age and whether they are more likely to vote in or out. Young people are more likely to vote in (and this is good because it gives them opportunities for cheap and easy travel around Europe) Old people are more likely to vote out and this is bad as it reduces opportunities for young people. Young people should therefore get two votes each and old people should be banned from voting altogether.*

How about this idea if you care about young people? Wholescale trashing of the environment (and I don't just mean by air travel) is simply not sustainable and future generations are the ones who will be most screwed by it. Maybe the stupid economy should get a bit smaller?

*the people on the board are not saying any of this by the way, just discussing other people saying it.

There is no such thing as "sustainable growth".

Sustainable contraction is what is required.

Yes, but does anyone know how to do it without more wars and starvation?

(Without sustainable contraction there will be more wars and starvation.)

As I regularly deal directly with suppliers in Germany and the Netherlands this whole debacle is not one I'm enjoying (or benefiting from!). During IndyRef my suppliers in England sort of understood that Scotland had been edging towards more self government over many years - a process and debate that is still ongoing.
With the EuroRef the agents for change are well connected to a right wing media base that can and will keep stirring after the vote - which I hope will be for 'Remain'.

After the Scottish No vote the mainly Unionist media moved back to its usual ground, the BBC had no more need to send foreign correspondents to Edinburgh, and Scotland was left with 'the Vow'. Non-Scottish people had nothing to fear from the Scottish vote as politicians on both sides had gone on at length about our 'family of nations' and 'social union'. Most of the debate here was on economics and the danger of Scotland being thrown out of the EU (!)
With Europe there currently seems to be depressingly little affection or respect. It's odd as we all know people from the EU - (eg the owners of Peter's Yard are from Sweden). It's as if Britain has found the island inconveniently parked in the wrong place. (I do remember a time though when we were all funding the Channel Tunnel when the EU was presented as our future.)
I also fear that some Brexiteers will sit on powers returned if the vote did go their way. I know that in an attempt to broaden their appeal Mr Gove is 'relaxed' about more powers to Scotland. Some even suggest this as an 'Independence Day' vote for UK/England/Scotland/N Ireland/ Wales to get 'their' countries back! This is the populist vote that I fear - although I think this resonates more in England as they don't have a parliament except when Westminster does an EVEL session.

Expect a rush on holidays to the EU if the vote lowers the Euro vs Pound even more!
Not all transport to Europe need involve a plane of course but the plans to get Scotland directly connected by train were shelved and we currently lack a ferry link.

Re young vs old (I still, probably erroneously, regard myself in the former bracket), I gave my Daily Telegraph-reading parents both barrels on why I'm voting Remain over the telephone a couple of days ago. Was met with a stunned silence, then a "this has become a very serious conversation" comment. Doubt I changed their intention, but hopefully gave them pause for thought.

Yes, but does anyone know how to do it [sustainable contraction] without more wars and starvation?

    By doing it imperceptibly slowly.

In any case, growth is perfectly capable of generating wars and water shortages. Fighting over precious resources like oil and water. One country consuming all the water before it reaches another e.g. US/Mexico/the mighty Colorado; or, Israel/Palestine/Jordan etc.

We should have had a referendum to decide if we needed a referendum.

Or at the very least, 50% of the electorate should have to favour leaving the EU, not just 50% of those who bother to get out of bed on the day.

UK being the dumb ugly place that it is, i fear we may well get what we deserve.

  17. If anything that map shows how much this is primarily an English issue.

There was a wonderful map like that doing the rounds of Twitter. It's only Scottish location was Falkirk, which they had placed approximately in the centre of Inverness.

...or it could reflect the fact that out of 40-odd million voters. 35 million live in England.

  20. .... which is why they're key, rather than the Scottish votes, which is why it's primarily an English issue....

...but the issue affects Scotland as much as the rest of the UK. Each individual vote is worth the same.

I'm not going to crack first ;-)

For data geeks there is a toggleable map in the Indy with predicted results for each area.
