    Q1 (20 marks) The UK of GB&NI has fallen into the hands of a band of anarcho-absurdists. Discuss, citing counter-instances of rational behaviour.

    Scottish Government stepping up contingency planning to protect us from the UK Government's (in)actions;

    We’re making initial decisions on issues such as medicine, medical devices and clinical consumables stockpiling, emergency transportation, support for supply chains, diversion of local produce and a host of other issues.

    All of this activity has become a significant focus of our resources and efforts, as it has to be for a responsible government. However it remains something that the UK could and should choose to remove as a risk, and as a cost, today.

    Banning low level letterboxes has been the subject of a long-running campaign by the Communications Workers Union, as they are bad for their members' health.

    I actually think it might be nice if the UK Parliament discussed something useful (even if a bit niche), rather than rehashing the same absurd Brexit arguments for the nth time. Why even bother with a debate before the vote of confidence? It's not like it's going to change anyone's mind.

    The First Minister was at Westminster to meet with SNP MPs, and said an extension of Article 50 and a People’s Vote were the only realistic options to break the Brexit deadlock.

    What's the Furst Minister's take on low-level letterboxes? I think we should be told.

    It's actually rather more interesting than I initially thought. Apparently the campaign has been going on for 60 years and although it's a British standard it never became law.

    Perhaps there is hope for pavement parking legislation then.

    All things are connected of course. The UK of GB&NI will not now follow the European standard for letter boxes, EN 13724:2002;

    “Postal services – Apertures of private letter boxes and letter plates – Requirements and test methods” specifies among other things: that envelope size C4 (229 mm × 324 mm) must be deliverable without bending or damage; that the internal volume must able to hold at least a 40 mm high bundle of C4 envelopes; an aperture width of either 230–280 mm (> C4 width) or 325–400 mm (> C4 height); an aperture height of 30–35 mm; a mounting height of between 0.7 and 1.7 m for the aperture; and various privacy, theft-protection, rain protection, vandalism resistance and corrosion-resistance test requirements."

    An Englishman's home is his castle and he can put his letter box wherever he so pleases.

    The thing I never understood is why anyone would want a low level letterbox.

    Well if no letter catcher someone would still need to reach to the floor to pick up a letter received.

    If was getting a Faberge egg delivered and had a low letter box it would drop less distance to the floor so less likely to break

    The people's priorities are clear today. Most-read article on BBC website "Indonesian woman mauled to death by giant pet crocodile", despite the front page being covered in Brexit stuff.

    What about those letter boxes that are vertical not horizontal - you don't see them so much these days. Was that the EU too?

    EDINA lock and key once put in a new letterbox for me (into the old gap. It was X pounds (reasonable price) I asked if they would fit it, they said they were dear unless it took less than 15 minutes. I said I think you will do it in about 10 minutes and they did.

    We have one of them. From Edina Lock and Key. I fitted it myself in ten minutes.

    A diagonal letterbox would be a step too far.

    Are letterboxes required to be rectangular?

    External, self-locking parcel boxes are what's required these days, no?

    People's Vote UK

    @peoplesvote_uk

    New YouGov poll shows UK would vote to stay in EU by 12 point margin - it's time for a #PeoplesVote:

    "A diagonal letterbox would be a step too far."

    I used to deliver newspapers through a few of these, as well as a few vertical boxes where the hinge and spring were inexplicably along the short edge. It was in my parents' village, which voted 70% leave, which was corroborated by the sorts of newspaper which formed the majority in my bag.

    @IWRATS, There was some factor in my letterbox I did not like the look of. I will ask MRs Garto if she recalls and we can discuss when you come for afternoon tea/cidre. I estimate it would have taken you 15 minutes (5 more than Edina / EDINA lock and key). Alas they might have gone the way of their sister company Edina Paint, though paintshed out at Chesser kept some staff, I am talking about the near Stockbridge branch of Edina Paint)

    Edina Lock & Key still very much in business. See here: https://www.inbrass.co.uk/acatalog/about-us.html

    Which reminds me, I've been meaning to drop by there for ages as they are the only remaining stockist nearby of certain models of Chubb security keys...

    This is because alas, the local locksmiths who fitted my door 19 years ago closed some time ago...

    Edina Lock and Key are still there - I bought a brass bell and pull off them not so long ago, replacing a beige plastic battery powered monstrosity.

    Satisfyingly getting it to work involved some bicycle components, namely brake cables (outer and inner), a pinch bolt assembly sawn off some old single-pivot calipers, an inline barrel adjuster plus the brass surround from a knob on an old chest of drawers (the perfect size to take the end of the barrel adjuster).

    Also a string.

    "With a knot in?" you may ask.

    But of course...

    From link -

    If the choice between shooting oneself in the head or in the foot is the answer to Britain’s long-term problems, surely the wrong question is being asked.

    Aye loon, at wis it. Dinna ken fit happent.

    Attended the French consulate last night for the 'galette des rois'. Speech by the Consul-General based on the theme that Europe deserves to be lived. That Europe shouldn't be seen as an external object but an integral part of the society we live in.

    I've reported him to the police.
