Fintan O'Toole: Brexit in one way alone has done a real service.

"The spectacle is ugly, but at least it shows that a fissiparous four-nation state cannot be governed without radical social and constitutional change.

In the aftermath of June 2016 the EU have continually expressed exasperation that the British have really been negotiating not with them, but with each other.

But perhaps it is time to recognise that there is a useful truth in this.

Brexit is really just the vehicle that has delivered a fraught state to a place where it can no longer pretend to be a settled and functioning democracy. Brexit’s work is done – everyone can now see that Westminster is dead."

And as one of the oldest democracies in the world we show the world that in this country it is the people not the politicians who are the boss.

I don't think there's a spreadsheet built that could calculate the consequences of causing the treaties of the EU to cease to have effect in the UK of GB&NI and Gibraltar overnight.

I think that would unleash forces way beyond the industrial and fiscal realms. Having breached the international treaty called the Good Friday Agreement and reneged on solemn (but unratified) agreements with the EU the UK of GB&NI would become an actual rogue state. Feelings of shame, despair and rage would, I suspect, run riot.

    The prime minister is coming to Scotland today and her former advisor Nick Timothy has written this in the Telegraph;

Only moving to a fully-federal system can save our Union from destruction

I don't think you need to be a political scientist to figure out what might have motivated this sudden Enthusiasm.

In terms of intellect, deliberate offence and filthy manners, there really is nothing to choose between a shirtless England fan singing 10 German Bombers while threatening to chuck some cafeteria furniture, and Ann Widdecombe ranting at MEPs that Brexit was comparable to slaves rising up against their owners.

Ursula von der Leyen, the nominee to lead the European commission, has signalled she will not reopen Brexit talks with the next British prime minister and stressed the “precious” Irish backstop must be defended.

She said she still hoped the UK would remain in the European Union, while indicating she had no intention to renegotiate the withdrawal deal agreed by Theresa May and EU leaders.

Someone called it the Untied Kingdom.

Nothing will ever be the same. We are quite far on in the story of the biggest change in politics for decades. The BBC can't catch up with the prevailing mood here (in Scotland).
STV did well on the PM hustings. Colin Mackay @STVColin really annoyed BJ by quoting facts back at him. (From Twitter reports as event was closed to public)

For by art is created that great ‘Leviathan’ called a ‘Commonwealth’ or ‘State'.

If you neglect a piece of art long enough it stops being art and reverts to being cloth, wood and vegetable oil.

Northern Ireland set for direct rule to aid Brexit, ministers believe

"Senior Conservatives believe that only a delay to the exit date from the European Union or the restoration of the Stormont assembly would prevent the British government from taking control of the province."

As for Northern Ireland so for Scotland in due course.

We're trying to clear Euro debt as fast as we can...
Of course rich people are making a fortune speculating on this while small businesses suffer. That's the Tory way and why they will never be the party of governance in Scotland. I'm looking forward to those responsible being brought to court.
Gina Miller time - bring it on!

Philip Hammond, the chancellor, has said it is “terrifying” that one of Boris Johnson’s close allies, Jacob Rees-Mogg, believes a no-deal Brexit will boost the economy.

Erm, even if it were true, his problem is what?

Frozen fish is much much fresher than "fresh" fish, as it has been frozen on the boat.

Unfrozen fish can be up to 20 days old!
