    I love that one of the first "take back control" actions is to give our European Council vote to Finland. I suppose I should be used to the "you couldn't make it up" nature of brexit - but that's a belter.

    Controlling the finances -

    The government is on course to overshoot its budget target by at least £8bn this year after extra spending on the NHS and preparations for a no-deal Brexit cut the surplus in July.

    The public finances were down by £2.2bn compared with July 2018 to leave a £1.3bn surplus last month. The decrease was almost entirely accounted for by rises in central government spending, much of it on staff salaries, as Whitehall departments stepped up hiring to cope with the impact of Brexit.

    The EU referendum took place about a year before Bait started shooting, but the result didn’t change Jenkin’s story. “You could see it coming,” he says. “It’s a disenfranchised people who were given the chance to reject something. Fishermen are always getting screwed over.” Still, he doesn’t think Brexit is the answer. “A complete rethink in how you treat working people and industry is actually what’s needed. The fishermen will get screwed over again.”

    I for one have every faith that Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith will allow no harm to come to her loyal and obedient subjects.

    Two petitions to sign (for what it's worth, media coverage, and a show of support, at least):

    Do not prorogue Parliament

    Parliament must not be prorogued or dissolved unless and until the Article 50 period has been sufficiently extended or the UK's intention to withdraw from the EU has been cancelled.

    https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/269157/

    Ask HM Queen to prevent democracy from being frozen

    The Prime Minister is planning to ask you to prorogue Parliament this September - to shut it down until further notice. This is not how British government and democracy is supposed to work.

    Please do not allow a reactionary Prime Minister to jeopardise our democracy, or your legacy. Your Majesty, please refuse to involve yourself in Boris Johnson's anti-democratic Brexit plans.

    I can only imagine that Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith's counselors have led her astray.

    This is all very troubling but her commitment to her loyal subjects and her realm can be in no doubt, surely?

    @iwrats - Elizabeth two in rUK but the first in Scotland - hence the fact the RM post vans here have no EIIR on their doors and have a Scottish crown with the laurel leaves / seaweed or whatever. rUK uses a dotty crown which is very appropriate.

    Court of Session is being asked to make an Interim ruling,
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-49496517
    In that case Westminster would have to sit until the case is heard in full.
    "They are now seeking an interim interdict that would prevent parliament being suspended until the case has a full hearing on 6 September."

    I'm confident that everyone will respect the main courts of the second largest nation in the 'precious union' - otherwise what is the point of being in a union?

    Ruth Davidson may quit but this has nothing to do with today's events. She was always going to do according to BBC. She did say to BJ not to crash her announcement today but he just ignored her which is a shame as that is a story in itself :-) Maybe she'll join the LibDems (!)

    Queenie should have knocked that back. No confidence must be a coming

    Ruth D's resignation has NOTHING to do with BJ's perogation. She was always going to resign. He was briefed that this was happening today weeks ago. So was the Queen. This is merely an internal Tory party matter. People should calm down. :-)

    Ps - It's shambles of course and illustrates to most people that we need proper local democracy as WM is not working (other views available but I notice nothing positive coming from the non progressive side).

    A neat considered sum up of where we are. I note the legal challenge from here has gone off radar now. News management is now trying to shift focus.

    @laidback, certainly a summary but what does this sentence near the beginning mean? It makes no sense.

    The Left want to leave the EU because they want Labour to sweep to power and dont want EU competition rules?

    One of the author’s solutions To close private schools would also need more unpacking

    Just scrolled back over my posts around the time of the fateful vote;

    Before;

    This whole thing does appear to be a proxy for a vote on English nationalism. I don't object to English nationalism at all - it could be a very positive thing - but I have enormous doubts about the people set to manipulate and profit from it.

    This is the first vote where I'm actually scared by the possible outcome. I am not looking forward to Friday one little bit.

    Just before;

    Scotland....England...UK.........Emotion
    ------------------------------------------
    Leave.......Leave......Leave......Sadness
    Remain.....Leave......Leave......Terror and excitement
    Remain.....Leave......Remain....Hilarity
    Remain.....Remain....Remain....Indifference

    Just after;

    Goodbye England. Nice knowing you.

    Made me a bit emotional to read all the thoughtful and polite pre-vote exchanges on here. I fear we won't seeing much of that for a wee while.

    That article is a hard to read stream of thoughts

    Lexit of the sort promoted by definitely not Corbyn is a naieve anti globalisation ideology that can be summed up as ‘local jobs for local people’ where inward migration should be stopped to create a labour shortage which will drive up pay for the ‘real brits’ who are left.

    @gembo @klaxon - BC is a flawed article of course. Trying to get logical views about this crazy situation is hard. Also apologise for a << rule 2 >> in url.

    There was a time when Corbyn was fresh but he leaves many with a sense of vagueness / confusion. Ian Murray was the most vocal in media here about the need to smash 'separatism' whilst staying close to EU - an aim he shares with Jo Swinson, Ruth Davidson.
    He puts great store in Court of Session ruling which he supports along with Joanna Cherry QC an SNP MP.

    A former senior official who left in 2018 told the Guardian they had received “a steady stream of inquiries” from colleagues who felt their work was “no longer purposeful” because the focus on Brexit over the past year had strangled policymaking.

    Britannia Unchained: Global Lessons for Growth and Prosperity

    Four of the five co-authors (pub.2012) became part of the cabinet of Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2019

    The willingness of Britain's employees to work hard is compared to that of workers of other countries, with suggestions that a decreasing number of Britain's workers are contributing towards economic growth through which state spending is enabled to be maintained. It is asserted that this undermines the United Kingdom's competitiveness.

    John Major has said he will seek the high court’s permission to join a legal fight to prevent the government from suspending parliament before the Brexit deadline, in an unprecedented legal battle that could pit a former prime minister against the incumbent.

    Court of Session, Edinburgh earlier today.

    From Joanna Cherry QC on Twitter...

      Court refuses interim orders at this stage but indicates willingness to hear full arguments early next week. So there is no decision on merits as yet on our attempt to halt #Prorogation. That will happen next week #Cherrycase #Brexit #StopTheCoup

      Our QC has indicated that the PM @BorisJohnson should lodge with the Court an affidavit sworn on oath about the reasons for the #Prorogation. #Cherrycase #Brexit #StopTheCoup

    MPs must test the mood of the House before the Speaker is complicit in overturning the Referendum result of 2016.

    The Telegraph thinks the UK of GB&NI's parliament is a threat to the will of the British people. I think that's a new development.

    The comments by Gove drew condemnation from both Labour, the SNP and Conservative rebels, including one Tory MP who said it showed democracy was under threat.
