"EDIT. Right if you have a the results for a journey setup from Dalgety Bay to Edinburgh Gateway and click the 'later' button if changes the destination from EG to South Gyle. Shirly Shume Mishtake?"

    Curious!

    You looking at SR website?

Think this is first scheduled train.

Takes two minutes longer than week before -

I'm fairly sure it didn't show stopping at both stations last night!

From Scotrail website for a train on 9 Jan:

    Inverkeithing to:

EGY £4.20 single, Anytime day Return £6.80
SGL £4.40 single, Anytime day Return £7.10
HYM £5.40 single, Anytime day Return £8.90

    And again

    Re-post + adding Newcraighall.

Shows need for rational pricing - how about one price between any two Edinburgh stations?

    Ok, this is just silly

    As posted above

    According to Scotrail app

    Waverley to SG £1.65

    W to EG £2.05

    BUT

    Haymarket to SG £1.60

    H to EG £2.05

    Newcraighall to SG £2.20

    N to EG £2.60

SO 40p (extra) from Newcraighall to Waverley (and presumably also to Haymarket) and 40p (extra) just from SG to EG

    Lothian Buses understands fares!

Another incongruity, Inverkeithing to Edin Apt (via tram):

£5.60 single, Anytime day Return £13.80 ... why would you buy this?

    For comparison Jet747 bus:

    £5.90 single, day return £8.20, 28 day return £11

The exact journey I'm looking at is Dunferline Town (DFE) to EGY/SGL and vice verso

SGL to DFE is £5.30 single £9.70 return
EGY to DFE is £5.20 single £9.90 return
    both are £5.50 off peak

Why the price discrepency is there for return not single is baffling. So my quandry on a return ticket journey such as SGL-DFE-EGY is whether I should buy the cheaper ticket which is valid for the whole journey but perhaps not the gates at EGY or the more expensive ticket which is presumably not valid on the stretch from SGL to EGY.

For comparison Waverly or Haymarket to DFE is £5.50 single £10 return and £6.40 off peak.

Life would be much simpler if they either zoned stations or had a formula which linked journey length to ticket prices. With SGL and EGY essentially operating as a pair of linked stations having a single fair structure would be the best option in my mind.

@fiefster, The website is even more confusing for your INK to airport journey. The cheapest standard single which is shown by default is a bus only ticket, valid neither on train nor tram. You would be in for a nasty shock if you boarded the train thinking it was valid.

So the longer return journey is cheaper? =/

Pretty sure a train ticket will let you through the gates at any intermediate station. I've done this when going to one of the suburban Glasgow stations, but returned from Queen St. So a SGL-DFE-SGL ticket should let you through the gates at EGY too. I think.

Meanwhile, ScotRail also announced today that two of the busiest trains on the route would be doubled in length from Monday, 12 December, to ease overcrowding.

The 7:58am from Tweedbank to South Gyle and the 4:52pm Edinburgh to Tweedbank will operate with four rather than two carriages.

Four daily off-peak trains will be similarly increased in length.

ScotRail will also operate more three-carriage Class 170 trains on the line instead of two-carriage Class 158s.

    Why wait...

The underpass is huge and doesn't have any dividing lines on it. Great work by Spokes over a decade to secure it.

The bit I was most interested in whether you could access the far (north) side of the station from the exit from the underpass. This will be key for a through route if/when the proposed West Craigs development gets built and they build a new ped/cycle bridge and a green corridor to the East Craigs Roundabout.

I'm pleased to say that there is a 4m wide path round the side of the station which will be open 24/7.

New path by HankChief, on Flickr

The problem is that it has a cyclists dismount sign which is probably fair enough as it crosses paths with pedestrians going from the train station to tram station. But it's probably fair to say the signs will be ignored by some cyclists....

It's great to have the underpass open to cycling! For anyone interested in the history (which genuinely does go back about 10 years) there are some links on the Spokes rail documents page. See paras 0911 and 1502, though there were plenty other things that didn't make it onto the website.

As is often the case, lots of individuals also contacted politicians about it at various times, which helps a great deal. Spokes always tries to make a big effort of informing members and others when it is most useful to lobby who about what so that people can use their time and effort as effectively as possible, as we did in this case at several points. Letters from organisations often have more effect if politicians are also hearing from the public (i.e. voters) at the same time.

Although the underpass campaign has succeeded, the fact that cycling was not fully considered from the start, and has only gradually been slotted in, shows up in the cyclists dismount sign that HankChief mentions. Spokes pointed out from early on that a route not just to the station, but passing it, and continuing to the future business and housing developments was vital. That really needed thought about very early on, given the major pedestrian flows that will be crossing it at the rail+tram station, and could easily have been achieved given they were working virtually with a blank sheet - instead of which we now have cyclists dismount.

"instead of which we now have cyclists dismount"

Yes, but the installed 'solution' doesn't need such signs.

    Are they 'legal'?

The other thing that struck me on my visit was the very limited facilities for motor vehicles (which is good).

There is a large loop to the North of the tram tracks with 3 bus stops/laybys on the way in and on the way out, 4 staff parking bays! and about 6 dropoff/pick up bays.

Time will tell how they get used/abused (plenty of scope for illegal parking/loading),

Another concern I have is on the amount of traffic using the exit from the Gogar Roundabout that I have previously posted about. Hopefully not so many that it becomes a problem.

Anyone reading that would quite rightly think it's an instruction to anyone riding a bike that they must get off the bike and push it. But actually it doesn't mean that at all.

Just check out the pick up/drop off point at the east end of Waverley if you want an example. Hardly anyone uses it, drivers (especially private hire) prefer to 'load' on double yellows, block exits etc. nearby instead. As close as possible to the steps without having to actually do a u-turn or 3-pointer. "Mayhem" when the London trains are due to depart/arrive...

@Crowriver they are 'end-on' spaces which will probably be too much hassle for some.

I was more thinking of cars parking there or elsewhere nearby assuming no enforcement.

Is it normal to have an official openin without actually opening a station? Access was blocked by 6 foot fences still as of the middle of the day yesterday.

    Generally don't think so.

I was at the official opening of Dalgety Bay railway station (by local MP G Brown) in 1998. Pretty sure it had been open to passengers for a while.

It was ages before the Queen turned up on the Borders Line.
