acsimpson I don't think anyone is claiming the election results were a mandate for independence. All I was suggesting is that the Government surely has earned the right to call it, given that the criteria it set out in its manifesto has been fulfilled. And the blocking of that right does nobody any good. It surely undermines democracy.

Of course, it may get voted down next week. It may get defeated at any stage. If so, well that's fair enough.

By making that choice, you de facto give them a mandate to pursue whatever policies they have said they will should they achieve 'power'.
Tricky that. If you took that view you could well end up voting for nobody, just in case they had a policy you don't agree with. You would hope that any party in power would accept that if some of their policies were contentious with large parts of the electorate they you might go easy on their implementation. So if the Scottish government are aware that a majority of the people do not want a referendum at this time they might take account of that rather than trying to manipulate the situation to get Independence by hook or by crook. Likewise I would have hoped that the UK government would have taken account of the narrow majority for Brexit to go for a soft rather than a hard option. Sadly in both cases party politics wins out.

Remember Richard Pryor in Brewsters Millions? 'None of the above' should be a valid choice on any ballot paper. Then you'd get a fairer representation of what people think.

I voted green purely on the grounds that they are the only party even talking about the things that will matter in 50 years time. I did this knowing that it was in some sense a 'wasted' vote, but people said that about voting SNP 30 years ago and look at where they are now.

It just gets recorded as a spoiled paper here.

I toyed with something like that over the UK gov's PR referendum a few years ago as neither option was very good.

I forced myself to watch Ch4 and STV to see how the vilification programme was going.

Casual viewer will observe two tribes at party conferences with associated branding.

T May stood at red, white and blue podium in Wales with 'Stronger for Britain'? repeated in Welsh. She used the phrase 'precious, precious union' and looked cross.

Angus Robertson at the yellow conference said she sounded like she wanted to put Scotland on the 'naughty step'.

I reckon Madrid will be wooed by the 'Royal Charm Offensive' ©ITV. Gibraltar and Catalonia will become considerations.

Kezia was on R4 Today around 0830 saying something about choosing between the EU or UK but I was sorting out the bread machine to make a spicy fruit loaf for my mum so I might have missed some details. At least she holds an office. Mr Brown isn't even a back bench MP anymore so he can do as much about this as I can.

A Tory minister has described Scotland as “another country” and said he was “despondent” after a visit to Edinburgh.

Aberconwy MP Guto Bebb, a Wales Office minister, said the Scottish capital had reminded him of Dublin.

Crafty Tory, saying we don't need an IndyRef2 as we are already another country. I am not falling for that, if that was true we would still be in EU

Mmmmmm… we are still in the EU so, as that is true, we must be a another country.

    Phew, that was simple.

Theresa May will head north of the border this week and attempt to defuse the SNP’s plan for a second referendum by focusing on a Brexit deal that delivers for Scotland.

With Nicola Sturgeon warning of hard Brexit, the Prime Minister will attempt to find common ground with the Scottish Government on access to the single market and protecting the rights of EU nationals.

Theresa May will not discuss the timing of a second independence referendum when she meets Nicola Sturgeon on a visit to Scotland today.

The Prime Minister will instead reject any constitutional changes that weaken the Union, and hold up the UK’s humanitarian work around the world as an example of the good that can only be achieved together.

    Which Union? 1536, 1543, 1707, 1801 or 1921 to 1949?

T May doesn't even treat all devolved matters equally. Her preferential visits to Scotland have been noted unfavourably.

As the Prime Minster travelled to Scotland to meet Nicola Sturgeon and vow to build a “more united nation” politicians and commentators in Belfast said her choice not to cross the Irish Sea reflected the low priority with which she regarded the devolved nations.

“The Prime Minister has been somewhat disengaged from the talks process but this is no surprise. The devolved regions are held in contempt,” a Sinn Fein insider told The National.
