The system is being introduced on Old Dalkeith Road to improve safety on the route, reduce the number of injury collisions and encourage motorists to drive within the speed limit.

    I approve

I'd love to see them at every entrance to Holyrood Park too (there's only 5)

I suppose worth discussing that the bar for action in this case has been "six accidents in two years, three resulting in serious injury or death"

@Klaxon, on that basis, there are numerous roads* (mostly "arterial routes") which could fit the criteria for installing average speed cameras. Queen's Drive would be one, according to Crash Map six serious collisions since 2011, one of which was fatal.

Presumably the criteria also include whether "other measures" are "ruled out" or not. Perhaps the polis, cooncil, HES, etc. will wait to see if the new 20mph zone in Holyrood Park "works" or not, before considering "unsightly" average speed cameras...

    * e.g. London Road between Easter Road and Elm Row, has sustained nine serious collisions since 2011. However none of these were fatal, nor did they hit the headlines, so that's alright then. Obviously that road needs to stay 30mph. Not.

Also Morningside Road had a very high number of serious collisions in the past six years, over ten (I gave up counting), with one fatality. Presumably speed must be a factor there too, but what is the correct intervention? Many side junctions, busy shopping street, these must be factors too. Maybe junction redesign is the way forward here, on top of the recent 20mph zone?

    "serious injury or death"

Probably including this notorious case where cameras probably wouldn't have made any difference

unless they help to increase the understanding that cars are potentially dangerous and driving should not be seen (by some) as a 'glamorous activity'.

    Comments up to standard.

. Yep, so far as the Councilis concerned, any half-ersed experiment that you want to try from any hair brained lycra clad cycle freak is welcome on the streets of Edinburgh. .

Next the Council will be introducing a £10 charge for any diesel vehicle entering the city. .

Then they will resurrect the congestion charge. .

Then every remaining shop in the City Centre will close

  8. Time for someone to post the old joke on the EEN comments again then -

"How do you know there are EEN commenters on your flight?"

"When you land and the Captain turns off the engines, but the whining doesn't stop."

To be on a 1 mile stretch south of Toyota:

I'd suspect they're rounding up and the 'gate' will be at the hospital main entrance.

chdot: "Probably including this notorious case ..." - or maybe not as the Camera Programme is usually slower than that to react, full 2016 data isn't available yet, and the 2016 death was probably outwith the area of this site. But probably did include this other fatal crash from November 2014.
