Resurfacing of NEPN

No. Benches are good, encourage positive use. The NEPN is already a hot bed of anti-social behavior without them, don't imagine it'll make it any worse.
I pinged Bryan Mackie a message last night. He was VERY annoyed that BB had just dumped that sign on the Silverknowes path without prior warning or without a cycle diversion. He has apparently gone to great lengths to explain the need for proper signage and diversions. Martin's email reply seems to detail everything that is meant to happen...
Also intrigued by 'access' changes. My understanding, again from Bryan, was that there were no access changes in the scope of this work, it was just resurfacing and drainage. I'll ask again.

Heras fencing blocking off the Trinty path at five ways this morning.
Didn't stop for a closer look but no obvious warning or diversions.

Spokes and others would really like to know what is being done at each of the sites - even if it's just which of " path resurfacing, path widening, over-edge drainage and new access controls"
Do the "access controls" involve barriers? What are they intended to control?“
I can’t understand how things have got this far without details of what and where having any public scrutiny.

Further to previous communications regarding the construction works which are currently underway on the North Edinburgh Path Network, please note details below regarding work on the Trinity Path and Hawthornvale Path.
Works on the Trinity Path will commence on the 13th March and last for approximately 2 Weeks until 23rd March 2018. Please find attached proposed diversion route for the Trinity Path works which will be in place for certain activities during this time.
Works on the Hawthornvale Path will commence on the 19th March and last for approximately 2 Weeks until 6th April 2018. Please find attached proposed diversion route for the Hawthornvale Path works which will be in place for certain activities during this time.
The working hours will be between 0730hrs and 1730hrs Monday to Friday, however, diversions will remain in place outside these hours to secure the work areas and maintain safety. There is no planned weekend working.
Due to the nature of the works and to ensure the safety of both path users and workers it will be necessary to implement traffic management which will include footpath closures. Local pedestrian access to properties will be granted. We appreciate this path is important for people walking and cycling in and through the area therefore, where possible, our intended approach to managing access during the works is:
1) Local diversions around work activities (may require dismounting and walking on verges)
2) Path closures – with diversion routes taken between accessible ramp accesses. Please see attached diversion map for the Trinity Path and Hawthornvale Path.
3) Information boards will be displayed at closure points with maps of the diversion routes for onward journeys. Please note that some diversion routes may require cycling on trafficked roads and dismounting for crossings.
These works are essential as part of the on-going maintenance programme and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience that these works may cause. Please contact John McCormack John.McCormack@balfourbeatty.com with any queries. Alternatively, if you wish to discuss these works with a Council Officer please contact Bryan Mackie, Professional Officer, bryan.mackie@edinburgh.gov.uk or 0131 469 5678.

"Benches = likely antisocial behaviour attractors. Discuss."
Perhaps one out of every seven incidences of large patches of smashed glass on the Restalrig Path occurs within throwing distance of the bench east of Lochend Road, but most of them are under/beside the Lochend Road bridge or nearby, usually in the immediate aftermath of a nearby association shoutball performance.

I've put the not entirly easy to read maps online:

WHAT is that ZEROHARM logo on those maps??
Poor taste irony?

“
For us, Zero Harm means: No injury, ill health or incident caused by our work activities.

Keeping the public safe from harm: All our businesses will manage and maintain Zero Harm levels of separation, security, monitoring and stewardship to safeguard members of the public from exposure to our hazards.

Email on signage fail explaining that diversion signage was delayed due to snow disruption. Rather than delay the project they just cracked on.
Expected to all be sorted tomorrow.

A quick request: if this is an ongoing thing over weeks/months, with a complex and changing set of closures/not-closures, could we start to communicate with maps rather than just descriptions?
Even at a simple level the inclusion of a link to Openstreetmap would be helpful. Here's an example:
Creating a link like this takes a matter of seconds. Follow my example link - click the 'share' button at the right of the screen. Check the 'include marker' box, adjust the marker, zoom level, etc in the obvious way and then take the URL that's shown in the obvious box. Paste this URL here as I did.
(Maybe a thread with only these updates and no other discussion might be useful?)
I know that I'd find this useful - I don't cycle these paths very often and it'll be a pain to have to read through screeds of notes to work out what the current situation is - and CCE could be an excellent source of crowdsourced up to date information.

Spokes and others would really like to know what is being done at each of the sites - even if it's just which of " path resurfacing, path widening, over-edge drainage and new access controls"
Do the "access controls" involve barriers? What are they intended to control?Doesn't this show how far out of the loop Spokes is?
For all the impression they like to give that they're keeping the council honest when it comes to cycling - or are the council's go-to resource when creating cycling infrastcucture - this suggests the council sees them as an utter irrelevance.

Slightly OT but does anyone know how long the Dalmeny Estate "diversion" will be in place ? I rode through from S Queensferry the other evening and the so called diversion almost took me back to where I started.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Prompted by rbtwtmn I've updated the map I did for the Blackhall path, to include the other works. https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/blackhall-path-diversions_201305#13/55.9725/-3.1872
It should be setup as editable, so feel free to modify as needed....

@gibbo Spokes is a volunteer organisation and it's members give of our own often limited spare time. However, very few members are active in our Planning and Resources groups, where the more formal work is done.
In this instance we have raised the lack of information several times but the council has been unwilling to share and has given various reasons.
Fortunately, some of our members and members of the public, also take up issues personally rather through Spokes formal groups and where they have a personal interest - they can often devote more time time and be more persistent.
You will be aware that we are in the fortunate state that there are a lot of major cycling-related projects in progress and more on the horizon, that are taking a lot of the formal group's time.
I'm hoping that through involvement in this Forum we can share the load more effectively.Posted 6 years ago # -
@McD, can I just say that I for one very much appreciate all the work that Spokes does in liaising with the Council on infrastructure and planning issues.
(Full disclosure - I am a long standing Spokes member but am not directly involved in any working groups).

Thanks for the map chrisfl. Have just tried to add an additional closure (ramp from Blackhall path to Telford Road) that I passed this morning on my way in to work. Hope it's visible to everyone?

NiallA - looks good to me.

@redmist. I don't know of such a diversion. Perhaps asking here would get a response:
A90 path news...Posted 6 years ago # -
chrisfl: excellent - that's better than my suggestion. I went looking for a service like that umap and couldn't remember an appropriate one. It might help to write a two or three sentence explanation for newcomers - and perhaps can we establish a 'completely closed' versus 'partially closed' system/colour?
redmist: check the Sustrans diversions page - Hopetoun is on the NCN and they sometimes provide information for bigger issues like that one: https://www.sustrans.org.uk/scotland/national-cycle-network/closures-and-diversions

@redmist from the sustrans page
We have also been informed that the Dalmeny Estate between South Queensferry and Edinburgh, intends to completely close a section of track used by the John Muir Way and National Route 76 for 5 weeks from 5 March 2018. We believe that the section of track involved is adjacent to Barnbougle Castle (see map). Take note that it may be that diversion using National Route 1 is sensible for those using the route for a longer journey through the area. The junction between these routes is obvious in the east (Cramond, Edinburgh), but not where they cross at South Queensferry. Here there is an unsigned/unofficial link between Route 1 and Route 76 at the south end of the Forth Road Bridge, with Route 1 on the bridge and Route 76 is below the bridge. This uses the service road which can be seen marked on Openstreetmap based mapping here.
We will add any additional information here.

@paddyirish Thanks, I found the details http://johnmuirway.org/news/dalmeny-estate-diversion
Shame as that's my route of choice if the weather is nice.Posted 6 years ago # -
Separate thread for Dalmeny, for those that are interested, please. It's not the NEPN.

So now they have closed off a perfectly usable 200m of the Blackhall Path between Corbiehill Ave & Main Street when there will be no resurfacing works there, leading to a pedestrian diversion which is over twice as long.
When I spoke to the workman setting it up this morning, he said that it was the Council who had requested it.
Posted 6 years ago # -
DD - is that not the bit that always floods?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Wishicouldgoabitfaster - There are two bits which always flood which are to the North West of the bridge for Davidsons Mains High Street. The section they have closed off is to the South East of DM High Street down to the footpath bridge to Corbiehill Ave. There is no work planned there whatsoever.
My reading of the drawings associated with the work that is taking place at Silverknowes is that no drainage crates will be installed. If that is the case, then resurfacing and widening the path will have little benefit.
To my mind, the council didn't read the results of the consultation and drew up the contract for the current works without taking into account some key issues that the consultation highlighted.
