    I for one welcome our AI traffic management overlords.

    Who could take issue with the comments?

    It was obvious but the cyclists are safe while contamination is a silent killer.

    i like how that last commenter missed the bit where congestion in E'burgh has dropped over the last year, and what else happened over the last year? hmm?

    also, our car would kill me if i tried to stay in second gear to drive 20mph.

    Happily for my morning mood I have already read five articles this month.

    I'm going to sound like a stuck record, but that 2nd gear/extra emissions argument is pure unadulterated nonsense.

    Know of any good sources?

    @unhurt

    Right-click>View source>Ctrl F>Article-Body?

    The article is actually missing a conciliatory quote from a cycle campaigner asking to at least have dropped kerbs on the proposed 130mph urban hyperway through the Old Town.

    @Frenchy - alas not. Some time ago I posted up the load and fuel map from my van showing how load affects the amount of fuel burnt rather than revs necessarily (many factors of course), but as other pointed out, the more significant reason is the amount of fuel required to *accelerate* to 30 from 20 is quadratic (roughly) which makes a complete mockery of the notion that driving at 20 produces more emissions. I do hope someone more learned than I has written this up properly - I'll have a look later....

    Minister for Transport and the Islands, Humza Yousaf said he was “pleased to see improvements in traffic flow across our major cities.”

    so that are towns and cities can benefit from further improvements in traffic congestion and air quality.

    Taken out of context (slightly), but highlights the mindset problem - ‘congestion is bad and can only(?) be improved by “traffic flow”.’

    Comically I just picked by the TS leaflet for the Q Crossing -

    It is not Scottish Government policy to provide for unrestrained growth in vehicle traffic and to attempt to do so would be unsustainable. Any increase in demand will need to be met by public transport and walking/cycling.

    I won’t be alone I wondering if TS follows Gov policy, or indeed if ministers understand it...

    Evening News take on the same report:

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/transport/drivers-in-edinburgh-spent-28-hours-stuck-in-traffic-last-year-1-4683696#comments-area

    28 hours per year. For the average commuter (260 working days x 2 journeys per day) this is around 3 minutes per journey; round it up to 4 mins as people won't be driving every day, holidays etc. How much time do you think the outraged commenters will spend hammering away at their keyboards?

    Yes, what is the cost to the economy of CCE? Thousands. All that typing in second gear.

    'Cost to the economy', like 'magic money tree' should see the author forced to walk the High Street with their face close pres't to a horse's behind.

    Well there's always the analysis from Ricardo-AEA.

    P.s. leaflet (August 2017) also contains -

    Intelligent Transport Systems increase the efficiency and capacity of roads by improving traffic flow and reducing congestion, in turn helping journey time reliability, reducing emissions and improving safety.

    @stickman :-p

    I feel perfectly entitled to weigh into transportation issues.

    The fact that we're only stewards of the earth has, of course, a bearing on transportation issues...

    Come the revolution all cars will, like the old Sinn Fein taxis in West Belfast, run with five occupants.

    When I lived in Belfast some black taxis still ran so: you get in, say where you're going, someone else hails cab, cab stops, determines if they are going the same general direction, someone ELSE hails cab, cab stops again, repeat; then you get dropped off and the driver charges you a bit less than a solo taxi ride but more than you think seems reasonable given he's about to do the same with the other passengers; debate/argument; grudging payment.

    In retrospect there are certain road-space and fuel efficiencies to this approach, plus you meet some interesting fellow-travellers (briefly, usually while everyone is blocked).

    @unhurt, yes that was my meaning, you could flag down a cab despite it being occupied then pay a couple of pounds as fare.
