    We could have a "Where did you go for a ride to avoid the royal wedding?" thread.

    I went the Innocent Path, the park and Porty beach. (Among other places.)

    I propose an engagement with Madame La Guillotine for the whole lot of them.

    A prince can mak a belted knight,
    A marquis, duke, an' a' that;
    But an honest man's abon his might,
    Gude faith, he maunna fa' that!
    For a' that, an' a' that,
    Their dignities an' a' that;
    The pith o' sense, an' pride o' worth,
    Are higher rank than a' that.

    Technically too busy to go for a bike ride today, but went out anyway at about 1:30 - lovely empty roads (even adjusted for Dumfries and Galloway). Struck me as I stood in the middle of the road taking photos unmolested for a good few minutes that people round here must be more patriotic/royalist than I'd thought.

    Overheard:

    "Underneath the pomp it's just a young couple getting married on a beautiful spring day and who doesn't like to see that? Sorry, I can't see through this Harry mask, eye-holes are too close together. Try the Megan one. That's better. But the pomp is what makes it different. We do pomp so well it makes other countries versions look like a tawdry imitation. Hot in this union jack three-piece suit. That's those countries that still have a monarchy. Not France. They killed theirs and now have perfect equality. Just ask any immigrant family in the Paris Banlieui. Prince Harry cup-cake, don't mind if I do. And it's a mixed marriage. That has to say something about modern Britain. I mean I don't have anything against Americans. Some of my best friends are American. But really, they do seem nuts sometimes. If two young people can overcome that, then maybe there's hope for us all. Now when's Cliff Richards showing up? I love a good sing-song".

    Well I watched it, with some of my extended family whom I see far too infrequently, and I enjoyed it. I'm not an ardent monarchist but a big wedding with that level of pomp is enjoyable and gets many people fired up in celebration.

    Crowriver/Nelly, comments upthread are unwholesome and may yet be moderated. Children read CCE too, remember.

    No more so than Horrible Histories*, which is a programme for children broadcast by the B bally B C.

    If Madame La Guillotine is otherwise occupied, I understand lamp posts can be pressed into service with addition of a length of rope. Failing that a large tree will do.

    * - includes a sketch described thus: "Madam Tussaud’s Make Show: How to make wax figures using freshly guillotined heads."

    I went to Arran, it was quiet but not as quiet as my walk up Arthur's seat the day the nation said goodbye Norma Jean to Diana

    Quite predictable how miserable old lefties like myself hate this so much.

    This is broadly what my wife and mother said too ! Apologies to anyone offended, but cant we have a laugh at their expense given we paid for this gig?

    £32million, and people living on the street.......just saying

    I was feeling a bit meh about the royal wedding (and always have done about royalty anyway) but tweets like this are making me feel a bit petty.

    https://twitter.com/Ebonyteach/status/997824696463785986

    I didn't watch the wedding at all, but from what I've seen on social media, it's done a lot to improve the diversity of your average CofE service and bring a bit of fresh culture the establishment generally and for that I salute Ms Markle. I'm bummed her mother didn't walk her down the aisle though. I might have actually watched if she had.

    Well, I suppose Prince Harry will probably be less inclined to dress up as a Nazi now - so that's something.

    @unhurt, I think we both follow one specific person, who retweets a lot of things that clearly chime with us both

    Whatever your thoughts on the monarchy are I agree with Arrelcat that talking about killing people (aka murder) is distasteful.

    Yes horrible histories talks about it, however that is historical and I for one find it quite different to talking about killing in the current tense. I'm sure there is no one here who would enjoy a discussion about killing a cyclists, and it's quite apparent that a lot of the population don't see how cyclists benefit them.

    Suggestions that money spent on the monarchy would be better spent elsewhere also seem petty. After all the £80million active travel budget (Indeed the entire transport budget) could also be considered irrelevant when some people amongst us have no choice but to sleep on the street.

    If the monarchy was abolished are people suggesting that all their assets should be sold? If not a large part of their expenditure would become a public liability. Figures for their cost to the nations are often obfuscated by no attempt being given to estimate less tangible benefits to the nation through areas such as tourism. I don't see anyone here saying that the privatisation of the railways was a good thing so why anymore so would the privatisation of Holyroodhouse?

    Had a family first communion to go to so I managed to avoid the whole thing. I stopped watching TV news a long time ago.

    Brompton sat in a side chapel during the mass but it's a wee bit nerve wracking holding an intrinsically oily thing when girls in white dresses run in all directions.

    The usual expression of surprise that someone would use a bike to go somewhere. Not from relatives, they know me, but other guests didn't.

    Mr Saville was also a semi pro cyclist so I'm not sure we should be looking at guilt by association here.

    Just got a 2010 Volvo wagon and the colour is Saville grey. I bet they don't use that colour anymore.
