Some discussion in PY today about possibility of birthday drinks in November?

22nd (thursday) 7.30 would suit me well?

Akva meets criteria of (1) big ish (2) decent beer (3) bike racks (4) no one that we know has been thrown out of there recently.

Or we could go for December - which is (i think) first time i met most of you in person: http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=1904

    Another good birthday thread: http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=18287#post-264719

IaINmCr IS banned from determining this due to picking pub and date for last one and then not turning up.

The inaugural pub meet in Diggers went well, nine years ago or whenever.

@gembo - see first link above.

we agreed that we couldn't take you or @arobcomp to Diggers because they have rules about noise levels and singing in the snug.

@srd, have checked the links, I can see little to corroborate your assertions. Ring Dem Bells 2 has been cancelled due to @arobcomp agreeing with my rationale in the links you shared that the bracket was too small to fit on modern handlebars (hence the surplus of bells also Arobcomp carrying a very heavy bell around in his pannier for months) and @unhurt saying it must not happen again.

Now we are 9 though the pub outing. Torturous as it is to arrange, again highlighted by the links shared, should be attempted.

Alternatively we could cycle over the bridge to meet CHdot or go for a pub to cycle to.

The Bridge Inn at Ratho is a good pub to cycle to. Also does food. Quite expensive. The shut pub in Balerno is being renovated by Kilted Pig. Might be open by the time we agree where we go. The open pub The Grey Horse has a nice wee snug. With nice stove, not many seats. Does have Women's toilet now. Mostly is a restaurant now though. Racks or railings within yards for all of these.

Spy law Tavern or indeed Colinton Inn both also just off the WoL path. No good bike parking for either of them though.

There should be more pubs with nearby bike racks.

Situated In The Heart Of Old Colinton Village Close To Colinton Dell, The Spylaw Tavern is A Haven For The Local Community, Walkers, Cyclists, And Passers By

Jarl and Bitter and Twisted on tap. I am intrigued.

I'd have to cycle @ejstubbs' route round the barracks though, which almost certainly means I'd be shot dead on the way home for singing McGinty's Meal and Ale at the perimeter fence. Price worth paying?

@gembo - my two points were unrelated.

    1. was to point out that i remembered diggers

    2. was the product of PY discussions after you left which ruled out a number of proposed venues from which you and other forumers have been removed/sanctioned.

    @srd, thanks for clarification.

    Diggers does allow singing.
Holyrood 9a barman said Customers were complaining I was too loud (we think really just him as no performing licence)
    Waverley everyone was jolly
Teuchters had a low turnout, though quality field. (Even the organiser failed to show)

I hear Diggers policing noise in snug as upstairs neighbours complain.

Ask arobcomp what Summerhall thinks of his singing....

@srd that is quite mental. But we do live in a mad world. You live in a flat upstairs from a pub affiliated to a well known local team and you complain about singing. What is it you thought was going to happen.? At times I find people in Edinburgh have a very high sense of entitlement.

We would not be in the snug though as you need more than 20 to get the free sandwiches. Not 20, more than .20

I'll go with majority vote. Would be nice to meet chdot halfway though. Convoy to Hawes Inn? Part of greater Edinburgh. On @DaveCs route home.

I'm up for a bit of Spylaw. Diggers as a fine second choice.

i'm less keen on Spylaw for an evening meet up. Diggers has tradition behind it.

we did an ILA tasting session in office 2 weeks ago on a friday afternoon - 6 IPAs in all - Bitter and Twisted came unanimously top by a mile. I'd never had it before. Somewhere with that on draft gets my vote - or anywhere the majority vote.

I don't think of B&T as an ipa. but it is a firm favourite.

@gembo "At times I find people in Edinburgh have a very high sense of entitlement"

Although it is probably also fair to say that there is a large probability that they are not actually natives?

I think in this case its more problematic having a council happy to allow idiots living above a pub to complain about noise from a pub.......

I am in Holyrood 9A later, will ensure no singing

@nelly, boy would I love this to happen

Person 1 - I would like to complain
Council drone- OK what would you like to complain about
Person 1 - I would like to complain about Situation X
council drone- Fine, I will just check if situation X is on the list of situations that people can complain about. Tum, te tum, err just checked but sorry it isn't so you can't I'm afraid.

Person 1 Right then I am going to complain to the Govt about Situation X
Council Drone - Of course, we have a govt rep now with us as we are joined up - here she is

govt Rep- hi, how can I help
Person 1 - I would like to complain about Situation X
Govt Rep, OK, that is fine, I am just checking the list, Sorry you can't
Person 1 Right, who do I complain to next?
Govt Rep - no one, you need to apply to Citizen Gembo to have Situation X added to the list of situations you can complain about. He is very straightforward, as long as you can get 1000 people to agree with you by filling in his form than he puts it to his panel of very reasonable citizens.
Person 1 ok but I want to be on the panel
Govt rep, yes there is a form for that too, fill in your application and The application panel for the reasonable people panel will have a look at that
Person 1 - I want on the application panel
govt a Rep- are you from Edinburgh?
    Person 1 -'yes
govt rep - ah, all the Edinbugh places on the application panel are already taken but when Highly Entitled Person 2 dies, as long as you have filled in all the other forms you can apply for that too. goodbye.

@gembo We went quite deep into the beer menu last night, didn't bother with burgers (I prefer a wee midnight feast from kebab Mahal en route home).

Jarl is lovely, as is the Long White Cloud, although Fallen brewers New World Odyssey was tremendous.

One compadre had the Double IPA (Stewart's?) at 8%. It tasted not bad, but that's too strong for moi.

He was feeling it later when we were on the 35ml OVDs in The Hebrides!

@nelly, if I drink OVD at the end of the night I have two options

    1. Purple puke
    2. 3 day hangover

Nov 22nd works for me. But discussions have confused me - are we talking (a) birthday drinks at Akva and (b) some sort of seasonal shenanigans at a venue still under furious debate? Or only one of the above?

Someone (not me!) should make a poll...

Purely out of interest to see my local get more sales (and really decent ales plus not one but two back rooms now) Athletic Arms also hosts a mountain of whisky "festival" at £2.50 a nip for 35ml. They do gin "festival" too now cashing in on the popularity of it.*
And best pub pie in town apparently in the camra guide.
But happy to go along with the masses and try to make it along wherever

*festival that runs all year round
