Even in these days of magic money trees, the budget for these schemes is limited and while organisations like Spokes will argue they don’t go far enough, other cyclists recognise some of the ideas are likely to cause more problems than they solve, will be of limited benefit, and the money could be better spent elsewhere.

There are plans for cycle lanes on Melville Drive, for example, even though there is already a parallel cycle path and another one on the north side of the Meadows. With nearly 100 acres of open space this is one location where social distancing isn’t a problem.

Is this part of their cycling special?

Anyone who uses the phrase 'magic money tree' should be banished from public life until they understand the actual functioning of money.

should be banished from public life until they understand“

    That probably includes Boris then.

He’s about to try to bamboozle the Scottish public with ‘we saved Scottish jobs (furloughed), which an independent Scotland couldn’t afford to do’.

And the UK Treasury stepped in to save the jobs of a third of Scotland’s entire workforce and kept the wolves at bay for tens of thousands of Scottish businesses.

More than ever, this shows what we can achieve when we stand together, as one United Kingdom.

If the parallel offerings are such perfect alternatives there, why do so many cyclists still use Melville Drive? Even if I don't use that road, it's obvious that there's demand to cycle there and so it should be made safe for those people. (Preaching to the choir I know)

Melville drive has always had some paint on the road I think?? All three routes Very heavily used by cyclists. (Sri Chinmoy mile North Side meadows to go to Uni or Tills bookshop segregated 50 metres / Main road / South side path to Go to Furriers (gone in last 5 years only) or EBC - ie completely other direction)

EEN has Robot generated copy now I think

Indeed. It is a main road like any other. Cyclists like to take direct and convenient routes, same as motor cars (or even more so, due to energy expended). Of course all main roads should have segregated cycleways, whether they have a parallel one or not

the principle of the Spaces for People programme to cut road space

It isn't cutting road space at all. To do that you would have to build on it, or start digging up Tarmac. The road space is exactly the same as it was before, because roads aren't only for cars...

I use melville drive as its a shorter direct route home at 18 mph from summerhall after a long day at work, avoiding students, joggers, children, dogs and their walkers, tourists, wayward drinkers, sports equipment and barbequers.

Just like the parallel routes for walking aren't justification for removing the pavements on Mellville Drive.

Nice quote from CHDot being reposted by Spokes. Though he stopped short of pointing out that those who bang on about shoppers driving to shops are really banging on about shopkeepers wishing to park outside their shops.

“really banging on about shopkeepers wishing to park outside their shops”

Yeah well, I don’t know the extent of the personal self-interest, so it would be along the lines of ‘all cyclists run red lights’.

“I continue to have serious concerns across a number of issues, but none more so than if you are to agree to have a community and stakeholder consultation then it would be wise to listen to those that have taken time and effort to contribute.

“There is no getting away from the fact that communities and businesses have been completely ignored in favour of one or two aligned contributors…

@chdot, yes you were fair unlike your next quote - You must consult consult consult and then you must feck off with your attempt to save the planet by inconveniencing shop keepers

another thing you did not mention was how much webby, Cookie Monster et al get paid by Ford/Esso

Keen cyclists and environmentalists have welcomed the new cycle lanes

    OKaaay. That "keen cyclists" again.

When will we see the equivalent for the nay-sayers:

"Keen motorists driving 500 yards to the shops, climate denalists and fatal-crash-denialists have serious concerns about the new cycle lanes"

OK, I get that Noa is the new intern and should be given some slack, but her use of the English language is atrocious.

    "believe" vs "belief"

    "cycle segregation lanes"

    etc.

    "believe" vs "belief"

No that was was wholly mine.

Quote submitted electronically and used in full!

Yes I did read before I sent, obviously not carefully enough.

This is modern media - work from home, no subs.

Upside - it’s harder to get misquoted.

Years since I talked to a journalist and hoped they’d pick the right words in the right order from a ramble.

The headline for this article in the print edition is “Space for People plans have put the anti-car lobby in driving seat”.
