I've mentioned before that probably my greatest driving "hate" on the road are the vehicles that suddenly pull into the bus lane without so much as a glance or any signal, to avoid the 10 second delay it would cause if they sat behind the vehicle in the car lane waiting to turn thereby blocking the lane.

I've also noted that on "my patch", it usually happens westbound at the bus stop on the bridge at Roseburn, where cars queue to turn up the hill.

Today the miscreant was a Lothian and Borders Police van. Not under blues and twos so not on an emergency call. It wasn't how close he was that troubled me, it's the fact that it was a Police van doing this. TWICE! What hope do we have if even the standards of Police driving are lazy enough to pull this maneouver (that has nearly taken me off my bike dozens of times). Well if the Police driver thinks its acceptable then I thought "probably not". Normally it's taxi drivers (who at the very least are allowed to use the lane (debatable in my opinion)) or dozy commuters. Today it was the law. If it had been the usual four-bee-four pulling the move, infront of the Police van, would they have switche don the flashers and hauled the offender over for a stern talking to?

Not good enough in my opinion and I was thinking of writing to L&B (I have the vehicle registration) to complain. Should I trouble myself?

Yes. They won't give a toss which is why we need to hassle them as much as possible.

If it was a van, there's every chance it may not have been a police officer. I have seen civilians driving police vans before. But if you feel that it was bad driving and put you in danger, then of course you ahould report it.

It's funny I knew exactly where this was as soon as you mentioned it, and it's a terrible pinch point, particularly when you are the one invariably being pinched.

If they mirror signal maneuver I'm fine with it, traffic flow and all that innit, but most of the time they just pull out (or should I say pull in). Is a bit scary.

I didn't see who was driving (as in did they have uniform), but it was a marked van. I followed it along Corstorphine Road about 20-30m behind and it pulled up the hill into Bungalowville.

Treat as any other liveried vehicle and report. Add something like "I have also told the internet and will be reporting back to it concerning the speed and quality of your reponse" but remember to bookmark the thread so you can find it again in three years' time when they write back.

It's not a great bit of road design in my opinion. There is a a lot of traffic that turns right into Murrayfield Av, so it might make sense for the bus lane to start a bit later.

Cars going straight ahead should of course wait in the outside lane until right-ruening traffic has cleared out the way, but of course that will never happen.

If the bus lane started later then at least straight-ahead cars might start off in the inside lane rather cutting left and right around the right turners (although the mentality of most drivers is to drive in the righthand lane even when they should be in the left hand lane).
