Psychotic taxi driver this morning in an amazing twin manoeuvre. First, he turns right from the left hand/ bus lane from Home Street to Lauriston Place, cutting across middle-lane traffic that was waiting before the yellow box, and cutting up me and the van who were at the front of the correct lane. Then, partly because the van driver was clearly miffed, the taxi driver overtakes a bus on the hill up from Tollcross, despite the fact it was already pulling off and that there was a fire tender coming the other way. Both bus and fire tender had to slow to accommodate the taxi driving bampot, despite him flooring it in a cloud of black smoke. Last saw the orange taxi stuck in traffic on George IV bridge.

Was driving today. On way home at about 6.30, junction of strathearn place and Whitehouse. Didn't see the start, but female roadie style cyclist remonstrating with a Skoda driver. He was right next to her in the ACL, she was clearly making "stay back" gestures. He was heid out, shouting.

Lights change and he drove off, pretty much across her bow.

I did a rather "stupid" thing and crossed the centre line in my car to force him to slow down - I also had a short instructive chat with him.

    What an arsehole.

Truly truly horrible incident, and one which could easily have ended with her under his wheels.

Didn't get the index number, sadly.

chdot: Saw a similar car turn left off Princes Street up to St Andrew Sq at lunchtime - they turned around at the end too, possibly because they couldn't go any further with the closures. I guess it's that time of the year again...

I saw an incredible one yesterday. It was at the foot of Clermiston Road North where the traffic is split to two lanes for right on Queensferry Rd and the other a slip road for left with a pedestrian crossing in between.

Driver yesterday is in the lanes to go right but goes left through the green man, thankfully the pedestrian crossing at the time had spotted the crazy driving and stayed on the pavement.

@chdot I may be being picky, but shouldn't your photo also be in the "rubbish cycling" thread - or was it the cyclist you were referring too? :) (Apologies if the obscured signage says bikes are allowed there as well as trams)

    Posted 8 years ago #
  7. MBM Construction lorry driver who took flashing amber after a red as 'Go Go Go!', completely ignoring the two pedestrians who were in the process of crossing (and then didn't stop to allow them to complete, just carried on going - felt worse that both pedestrians clearly had some mobility issues so needed longer to cross).

Should have that on video, in which case a copy will be sent to said company.

"shouldn't your photo also be in the "rubbish cycling" thread"

    It's a fine line!

Person dismounted and pushed across Princes Street to get to Market Street.

(Just another example of where tram didn't consider/actively disadvantaged people using bikes.)

After climbing the aptly named "little 'badboy' climb in Inverkeithing", I followed the one way system to join the High Street. At the roundabout a car which was heading Southbound, and had right of way, waited for ages for me to turn onto the high street ( I had ~50m to travel uphill) and then promptly went the wrong way down the one way street whence I had just come. All to save ~50m in a one-way system.

Does this mean I can make a sweeping generalisation and whinge about all drivers driving down the wrong down one-way streets?

On the plus side, at least he waited for me to get out of his way before doing that...

This seems to be the norm for red lights these days.

Almost taken out in Stockbridge this morning. A woman sitting in the right hand lane suddenly decided she wanted to go left along Henderson Row instead. No indicators or looking - just done it.

Thankfully I am always waiting on stupid driving like this at that particular spot so was on my brakes in a flash. As per usual no apology was forthcoming

  12. The young guy in an Audi (why is it always an Audi?) who ran into my other half this morning (in the car). Just not paying attention as she stopped, in a queue, for a van to reverse into a parking space, and he ran straight into the back.

Fortunately doesn't sound like too much damage, and got all the details.

For me it was a Transit driver through Roseburn who clearly didn't like the thought of me ahead of him, despite keeping pace with the traffic ahead. And the private hire driver who went through ridiculously on a long-changed-to-red with a schoolkid just about to cross. Hopefully the camera picked up his number through the rain because he will definitely be getting reported.

    Hi all,

one of the reasons I joined this forum was to float an idea amongst the user base here. I have had enough close shaves and one serious incident(forced to make a choice between being squashed between white van man and a parked bus or go into back of the bus - I chose the latter and hit the back at about 25 MPH roadrunner style). I have had so many stressed postal worker drivers coming out of the depot at me in sighthill without looking that I almost expect it as part of my daily commute to Edinburgh Park.

I am thinking of putting together a simple site that would allow people who have captured clear footage of dangerous driving on camera to report it into a central repository. The idea would be as follows:

    1) You capture footage with reg plate clearly visible
    2) You upload footage to youtube
    3) You go to the site that I create, enter reg plate number, link to youtube video, title and short description of incident and point out the location via a google map
    4) Info is stored in a database

Due to lack of time etc it would be a quick and dirty web site for now, but the idea would be that over time, the functionality could be extended to provide reporting on the database, e.g. incidents could be plotted on maps, users could search for reg plate numbers etc and we could spot repeat offenders and so forth. I have no idea where it would lead but perhaps it could be useful in backing up reports to the police if there is evidence of repeat offending.

If there is enough support and desire amongst the forum here I'd be happy to put some time in to knock up something that would be capable of taking data in - extending reports etc could be done at a later date. I just need to check that such a site would not be breaking the law in any way.

    Comments welcome...

    Cheers,
    David

  14. There's one main reason I'm not sure about having a reg number searchable database of bad driving.... What happens if someone sells the car? The new owner/driver is then tarnished by a previous association of the car.

Yes, that is an excellent point to consider. If the purpose was to support prosecution claims then it probably wouldn't matter as the owner could prove they didn't own the car easily, but the reputational impact as a bad driver isn't something I'd considered.

I'd be very careful and look thoroughly into the Data Protection Act. Storing people's personal information for any length of time could fall under this. Anything that can identify an individual, such as the licence plate of their car, could be considered personal information under the terms of the Act. Check it out first before you proceed, I'd advise.

PaulMilne - yes this is something I need to investigate. I'm just trying to gauge if there's interest from the community first.

    @nobrakes

That's a really good idea - I suggest you go for it. And start a new thread on the forum to discuss...

What happens if someone sells the car?

The buyer can then check the history of the car online before buying. If it's been driven badly, it's also likely to have not been looked after. Useful for the buyer to know.

  19. From previous research into this I'm pretty sure numberplates don't count as 'personal information', because they can't actually be used by Joe Bloggs to identify someone, and they are in the public domain, plastered front and rear on a car, so not private/confidential information.

Been a long while since I was a DP officer at a company I worked for though, so things may have moved on!

Hmmmm. Not convinced that side-steps the problem. But aye, new thread to discuss that would be welcome.

26-year-old man who jumped from a moving car to avoid arrest has been sentenced to 8 months in prison and disqualified from driving for 10 years.

Driver Robert Laidlaw leapt from his Ford Focus, leaving his partner and child inside, as it travelled towards Uphall Primary School in West Lothian.

Around 5pm this evening, I approached a grey Audi estate (SV53 LTU) sitting at a red light in the ASL on West Preston Street with the young male driver concentrating on two mobile phones in his hands. I had to sit to the side so I wouldn't get in the way of the pedestrians waiting at the crossing. As soon as the pedestrian crossing signal changed from the green to the red man, the driver shot off through a red light. I shouted "Oi!" at him.

Following on from this I took the same route as the driver, with him ahead, through East Preston St, right on Dalkeith Rd and left on to Holyrood Park Rd - at this point it's a dual road so he sped off into the park. I didn't think any more of this, however as I cycled down Queens Drive about a 1/3rd of the way down I could see said driver perform a 3 point turn. I held back to keep my distance as I was cautious of his previous behaviour but as he had turned to face the direction we had both come from he drove over the lane he was in and straight at me forcing me to pull sharply to the side of the road! I couldn't believe it! Perhaps the incredulity in my face told him what I was thinking but he shot off anyway.

I called Police 101 straightaway. Although I'm not sure what they'll do as the operator had never heard of the Commie Pool before so we'll see how that one goes...

Terrifying stuff but was glad I held back and hope nobody else encountered this idiot tonight.

@Rothar - did operator say to use 999 instead of 101 to report driving like that in future?

@Stickman & @condor2378 - frightening if that is the case.

@slowcoach - No, the operator said it was logged and officers would look into it. Although on reflection I'd probably report via 999. The adrenaline and shock told me to call 101!

The guy driving the green estate that followed through the taxi that had driven through the amber/red light from Home St turning right onto Gilmore Place. Then, as I turned left onto my road, the van driver coming towards me on my side of the road. There are no lane markings, but still. I came to a halt in a very primary position, forcing him to stop, before gesticulating towards the free space to my right. After a brief impasse, he pulled away onto the appropriate side and so I continued home.
