How long do you get out of a charge?

    How waterproof is it?

@galaxy - I get a couple of hours out of a full charge. One of its selling points is that it's waterproof which it seems to be...

Rubbish driving, but also rubbish junction (is there a thread for that?)

At lights at Tarvit Street I was aiming straight ahead towards Gilmore Place....

One driver turning right from Gilmore Place decided he had enough time to do that without cutting me off (and he did). But then five other drivers of motor followed him turning right.... So although I had right of way I was stranded in the middle of the road waiting for all the traffic which should be giving way to me.

This is a really rubbish junction. When I turn right from Tarvit Street I give way to vehicles turning left from Gilmore Place, but so many jump the red light I sometimes then come into conflict with pedestrians who are quick of the mark to cross the road, and tell me off.

All in all it's rubbish junction for cyclists cos cars just bully their way through.

But perhaps it's all my fault. What am I doing so wrong?

@jules878 it is a rubbish junction, but I find that if I'm ready to move as the lights change (although, as you might have seen in the rubbish cycling thread, others are more eager still), then I can usually cross the junction before vehicle drivers have time to react. Once in a while I find myself in a similar situation to yours despite that when heading west, but I've never had a second vehicle follow through. On a few occasions I have 'forced' a vehicle to give way to me (a tad risky). I wonder if the east-bound lights change a bit sooner or if it's just the shorter distance... A good candidate for advance lights for bicycles?

yesterday. I entered the polwarth roundabout, heading out of town (west). There were three cars stopped in the roundabout as pedestrian was crossing at zebra.

    I approached slowly.

First two cars moved off. Third car still stopped. in the middle of the roundabout.

Posh looking audi. Rolled up to drivers window and bellowed 'get off your phone'.

sadly window wasn't open. just got a smirk from middle aged bloke.

    i should have thumped it.

@jdanielp No I hadn't seen other thread, but I have now. I usually turn right here, so was unaware I needed to be quite as speedy of the mark when going straight ahead.

The first driver saw me, and I don't have issue with him. But all the others followed. I think some of them didn't actually see me, and others saw me but didn't care.

I didn't feel like trying to force my way between them.

I might have been "in the right" if I'd done so, but lack confidence to do this and never feel like "in the right with broken leg (or whatever)" would feel like I won the battle successfully.

    @SRD Oh... Sigh indeed.

So how does one suggest change, and to whom?

I guess most junctions have some flaws, but this one is bad, bad, bad from all directions, so is a top candidate for change (she said hopefully).

Maybe get the stars to demand a revamp of 'front of street' -

@chdot - if you remember, there is also the planned change to make Tarvit Street one way with a cycle contraflow in the canal-innocent link. One of the big problems here was the necessity for the huge lorries to park on Tarvit Street for the King's theatre. If you remember at the consultation there were all sorts of ideas mooted, including having a barrier system only for those lorries and making Tarvit street otherwise entirely car-free. Maybe there's opportunity to get the "stars" involved here too

    I remember all/most of that.

I also remember T St. being shut for quite a while.

All seems to have been 'delayed'.

    Stars or Tsar??

I do that junction a lot, right turn from Gilmore Place, and have never once considered the traffic opposite to have priority. Have I just been misreading it? It's clearly not a straight line so I always considered it as two separate T-junctions rather than a single cross-roads. If you do read it as a cross-roads then you have to assume that you're not supposed to turn right out of Gilmore Place because any stream of traffic coming straight over from Tarvit Street to Gilmore Place will be longer than the green light.

@dougal it's a good point - the ambiguity is what makes that really dangerous - I also find this one horrible for a similar reason - going "straight ahead" from Henderson Terrace to Murieston Road is not the signed prohibited right turn, but it's not quite straight ahead, and certainly the cars coming from Gorgie Road up Henderson Terrace don't consider themselves as turning right - many a time I've been stuck in the middle of that junction....

First commute from Colinton to town at 8am with all the surrounding schools back. Absolute chaos and loads of rat running and close passing for no gain. Really stressful after a summer of quiet roads. Just show how many people drive their kids to school.

Particular numpties heading up towards bruntsfield and Holy Corner.

@Dougal - That's interesting. I had never considered that traffic opposite wouldn't have priority, possibly because the two "T-junctions" share traffic light timings.

More to the point: where can you actually buy one? There seems to be a used one on eBay ATM, currently bidding at £50 with three days to go. Doesn't seem to be available from any UK or EU retailers :(

Myself, I prefer a cheap GoPro clone. One advantage of this is that it allows you to pick and choose from a plethora of proprietary and third-party GoPro mounting whatsits. I bought a cheap chest harness for it from Decathlon last week, for the purpose of videoing our Queensferry Crossing Experience while leaving hands, brains and everything else free for taking still photos, goggling at the views etc etc. It seemed to work just fine, and I'm planning to try it out on the bike soon. (I hate helmet cams, and find bike-mounted cameras only marginally better. A body cam could also come in handy if you need evidence of an argument/assault.)

The Fly12 seems to be an all-singing-all-dancing light cum camera cum smartphone connected tamper alarm, but it aint' cheap. I am contemplating getting a Fly6 to complement my GoPro clone.

King's can't really be anything other than a crossroads where you have to yield to turn right. If it wasn't, it would have explicit arrows rather than a green light, like at Tollcross. If you end up 'caught' in the junction at red then you've already crossed the stop line so it's up to you whether you want to continue or wait to proceed on the perpendicular green light or any combination thereof. It's all legal as long as you give way to pedestrians.

There are a lot of crossroads far less immediately obviously so than at the King's. See Holy Corner, the other Cameron Toll junction and Dewar Place (not quite the same, but both "straight on" and "left" involve an initial left turn except there's a left turn filter arrow which comes on when it's not safe to go straight on...)

@ ejstubbs there's another thread with much discussion (mostly me complaining) about GoPros etc... but I cant find it.

Fly6 is/was/will be again awesome, but has issues with the battery - known issue. I disassembled mine last night & will try to install new bat this weekend.

Replay XD looks great - wish I had bought that instead of the GoPro, which is dreadful. Might sell the GoPro and buy that.

@algo I ended up stranded in the middle of that junction one time and ended up dismounting, making for the safety of the traffic island on Gorgie Road, then crossing the rest of the way as a pedestrian on the green man phase.

@Iain McR: Did you mean this thread? I can see that the shortcoming you found with the GoPro4 would be a pain.

As I say, I use a cheap GoPro clone (as can easily be found for as little as ~£30 on Amazon or eBay by searching for "HD action cam" or similar) which must be about five years old now but 'just works', including correctly overwriting. I suspect two things:
    1) GoPro aren't really aiming their cameras at the 'dashcam' market so overwriting isn't a key feature, and could even be a negative for people using them to make actual films (GoPro and drone footage is increasingly common in TV programmes these days).
    2) The cheap ones don't try to do anything clever like wifi or 4K, so they're more likely to get right the limited range of functions that they do provide. (I say "limited" but TBH even my cheapie has screens and screens of setup options.)

I had to knock on the window of a giant white Mercades this morning to let the driver know that the road in front of her was clear and she was blocking the road.

She looked shocked, that I had caught her playing with her phone. But I suspect will do so again.

(I did get a thumbs up from the Taxi waiting to turn)

@algo: "cars coming from Gorgie Road up Henderson Terrace don't consider themselves as turning right"

Given that the repeater light for traffic approaching the junction along Gorgie Road has three separate green aspects (ie one each for Murieston Road, Dalry Road and Henderson Terrace) then I think they're correct not to regard the "no right turn" sign as applying to Henderson Terrace, if that's what you meant. I think that the green for Henderson Terrace only comes on when traffic emerging from Dalry Road has been stopped, so I don't believe there's actually a conflict there - though I'm more than willing to be corrected (I don't go through that junction in that direction very often - at least, not when I'm the one in control of the vehicle).

@ejstubbs - you may well be right - I'd have to check, but I think actually when the right filter light is green for traffic turning right up Henderson Terrace, it is still green for those attempting to go "straight on (ish)" from Henderson Terrace to Murieston Road. You are definitely right to say that the traffic going right on a right filter should consider it has right of way there.

This afternoon I was standing towards the edge of the pavement at West Port waiting for my wife, who was part of the usual crowd of people looking in the window of the cat cafe.

Employee of Edinburgh Carpet & Flooring Warehouse decides to reverse his van (KM59 TLK) on to the pavement towards me. He's going slowly, but I stand my ground as I'm on the pavement. I can see him glaring in his side mirror at me. Eventually he comes out of his van and tells me to move. I point out that I'm on the pavement and he shouldn't be driving on the pavement. He says yeah, he knows that but he'll only be two minutes. I say yes, but he shouldn't park on the pavement and he isn't actually helping traffic get past by doing so. He responds with something along the lines of "**** off" and heads across the road.

Watch out for this bloke: an aggressive little redhead who I'm sure drives like this all the time.

King's is horrible in all sorts of different ways. Eastbound the established usage seems to be that any cycles in the ASZ are usually able to cut in front of any traffic from Tarvit St, but any right-turning cars (or bikes stuck behind them, which happens to me at least a lot) yield to oncoming traffic. That said it is not at all uncommon also for cars to cut in front of traffic coming from Tarvit Street if that traffic is 'only' bikes.
