Oddly I have just had someone pull that exact same manouvre on me. I elected just to bask in the pleasure of rolling past them 5 seconds later in Leith Street and leaving them far far behind in the queue.

Does reporting these folk to the licensing people(not the taxi company) do no good? I'm not in Edinburgh, nor have I cycled there (yet...and it will be without the Scenery Watcher) but do the licensing folk not take note? Taxi folk would have you believe that they have to be whiter than white and with an impeccable vehicle before they are allowed to operate ...or at least that was what we were told by the folk on the council who used to organise transport for the SW to get to school. Plus they seem to be constantly moaning about how they can't make a living as there are too many taxi licenses given out, so does the threat of being reported not even cause a wee bit of worry?

" one of those inferior van-style taxis. " I would argue that they are superior as they can take six passengers as opposed to the tradtonal five. Still doesn't excuse such shoking drvng from somebody whose job is to drive people about. Must be hard work lifting those podgy stubby arms over the inflated gut..... Hard life eh!!

recombodna - did you report the shopping trolley? think council/police should be aware if there is another spate of anti-social incidents starting up.

I don't like the van ones mainly because it feels like you're sitting too high up in the back, and it's a bit awkward getting out. Old skool black cabs for me.

After I filtered through to end up behind it, the left-signalling car at the front of the queue at the North Bridge lights on the High Street executed a perfect edging-round-the-corner-whilst-the-pedestrians-still-had-green manoeuvre, though he stopped before going across the second pedestrian crossing. I presume he wasn't paying sufficient attention to catch my theatrically puzzled face in his mirror when the light did go actually green.

Following a close pass by car at Dobbies roundabout, I gave the driver a hand signal indicating the small amount of space that he gave me. Remarkably he saw it and gave me the finger. I guess my hand signal could be misinterpreted as indicating smallness with respect to part of his anatomy.

Encountered plenty of aggressive driving in the park area whilst on way and during the Hilly Tuesday leisure event.

    1. BMW overtook and then cut in at Commonwealth Pool without indicating. Obviously could see me despite my lowness but was in the 'teach him a lesson' mode. He jammed on his brakes and I almost forgot where the brake levers were on the Nintendo style controls on Dave's Raptobike....

    2. Once in the green environs of Holyrood Park the fun really begins. The 20mph limit is of course not enforced and the few bikes going round tonight were subject to intolerance as the default.

    3. Historic Scotland have re-opened the hill road to allow car-borne dog walkers easy access to Dunsapie Loch. Why? I only let them by at lay byes as I consider their journey of marginal importance and an unsuitable activity for a park. (Mind you cycling round the hill several times might rate as of little importance to them!)

    Moan over...

I feel your pain LaidBack. It's *always* on the uphill section (between the gate and the loch) when I'm going at my slowest that I get a car behind me (why is this?).

Normally I sit tight and let them wait until a lay bye where I give them a thumbs up for waiting and peel off. Most of the time I get a cheery wave as they pass by - only once had an aggro beep with this tactic.

Two instances of MEMEMERUSHWHOOSH in as many minutes on Marionville Road this morning. One rushed past be indecently quickly between the second and third pinch-points just so that she could get to the council ute doing a three-point turn all the quicker. Coming up to the roundabout by Sainsbury a red car used the right-hand lane to whizz past me on the outside and force me into the left-turn-along-London Road-lane, merely in order to spend a few extra seconds waiting at the back of a line of four cars whilst I went up to the ASL. Fortunately I had my big yellow gloves on, making my finger-gestures (little finger for the first one, tut-wagging-index for the second) more easily-seen.

Red van/minibus sort of thing PN03 CWJ (Renault Master Sl28 Dci) must have been upset by all the parked vans on the High Street preventing him from overtaking me going up there. The slower cyclist in front of me was hugging the kerb going up the Lawnmarket after the lights so I sat in primary to go past her, not being massively surprised when there was a mighty revving to the north-east. He was perhaps six inches from my handlebars judging by how bent my elbow still was when I lightly thumped his left side; I definitely didn't even have a wee-girl's-outstretched-arm's-length of space. I usually don't bother physically notifying vehicles which have come too close; perhaps my new bars made it easier, but I'll possibly not bother again if every time I do it means subsequently having to do some evasive swerving/accelerating to stay out of the way of the irate driver as opened his door to try and block me passing to the right and tried to block me in against the kerb in order to remonstrate, presumably partially physically. I was wondering whether it might be necessary to turn back uphill and use the bollard at the top of Ramsay Lane to block his pursuit or dismount and scamper up or down some steps to escape when he got bored and drove on. He went up Spittal Street so I was able to continue on my planned route without introducing any decoy turns.

  15. After reviewing the footage of the apparent red light jump on Fountainbridge witnessed by me and Steveo this morning I can confirm that our light went green with the Volvo XC90 still stationary, and the old guy in the driver's seat did indeed cross the (second) stop line long after his light would have turned red, and so the motorcyclist who was to our right and shot off the line as our green appeared had every right to honk loudly causing said XC90 to brake sharply in the middle of the road.

(I do like that my new camera has a screen so I can review things on the fly)

After being tailgated for two miles on the A720/A702 on Wednesday by a lady driver who ought to have known better, and Thursday's joy with an aggressive taxi driver who I have reported to CEC, I was wondering if post-POP had seen a marked increase in low standards of driving. It sounds like it isn't just me!

POP was such a good-feeling event that my tolerance of bad driving has completely run out since.

@Arellcat - were you on the ICE on Wednesday when being tailgated? It may be that the driver did not have the confidence to overtake you, not that I am excusing her bad driving skills, and they should keep back. I don't think driving standards will have deteriorated in that short time, always been naff, funny though some days you get a run of complete d**kheads and you end up wondering if you are missing something, like was it a full moon last night/tonight, what possible reason is there for some many of them to be out in the one day, on passes perhaps?

Is bad driving like buses? You have no incidents for a long while then you get several near-death experiences all together.

@Cog, Wednesday was a motorbicycle day, hence my use of the bypass, but tailgating seems to be on the increase in my experience. At 70mph with mirrors full of car it's quite adrenalin-raising.

Was brought to me by an impatient oaf in a black jaguar saloon, dear oaf, overtaking me with inches to spare as we turned from Polwarth was not only pointless, stupid and dangerous, it also earned you the scorn of the pedestrians when you discovered that the bike "holding you up" was equipped with an airzound, your feeble toot back fooled no-one I'm afraid. I also have to say that your change of heart in deciding not to stop and discuss the finer points of the highway code was your only sensible decision (I imagine encouraged by your passenger) this is because I have actually read the highway code and understand our obligations whereas for you it is obviously an abstract concept. As you are clearly unaware, the red bit at the lights is called an asl and for bikes not cars, I hope a Policeman can explain it clearly for you soon. Oh and after all your frantic willy waving you should know that at the point I turned off you had managed to pull a whole one second ahead of me. Well done you, now run along and put some more fuel in your tank and pay some more tax. I have to say though 10mpg seems an awfully expensive way to make youself look like a ****. Couldn't you just stay home and keep it a secret? (Or better yet get some driving lessons, muppet)

re Tailgating. I am constantly amazed how close people drive to the car in front. Driving up from cambrdge last weekend in the driving rain and people are right up your @r5e at 70 mph. then of course the inevitable crash on the southbound carrigeway closes the M1 for an hour or so ...... Morons!!! KILLER MORONS

    On Seafield Road near Macdonalds.

With customer who was on trike with half watt reart light and flag. My bike is lit with cherry bomb.

Traffic slows up for red light and we are matching speed - I keep in centre of lane to be visible in rear view of van ahead.

Mini who is behind cuts in and tries to squeeze me off road - ie she actively tries to shove me off lane.

I have to defer - she is about same height in her car as my recumbent so can see me well enough to judge her actions.

I point to my mirror to indicate that I was using mine and why wasn't she using hers.

She winds down window - her partner is stiiting there drinking a latte but sensibly saying nothing.

Turns out that she could see me - and that I shouldn't have been in middle of lane in her opinion. We continue chatting side by side as traffic is only moving at a few mph...

She considered her actions safe and sensible. Sad.

Why can't we re-test existing drivers more often?

  24. Always confuses me that "You were in the middle of the road, and that justifies me then using my vehicle as a weapon against you..." Surely being in plain view, and an admission that you were in plain view, makes you even more premeditatedly culpable.

Yes, tis true tailgating seems to be becoming more prevalent.

What can I say @LB a German marque car, made by BMW, I notice many of them usually because they drive far too close to me when overtaking alarmingly regularly, and almost had one take me out when it was very icy and deep snow which was sitting on my rear mudguard and when I stopped outside of my house insisted on winding down the window and shouting and swearing at me, stating the obvious that it was icy, did I not realise that....well yes, I could not but help notice and was going slowly and gingerly due to a camber on the road, not withstanding thinking that the a*5e behind me is going to run me over when I stop. She did try to rush off, but suffered wheelspin and slipping and sliding as she clearly knew how to drive in such conditions!!

Last week approaching green traffic lights on my road bike, full ERC stylee but slow, a young girl on a bike turns into my road from the left through the red and continues on the wrong side of the road straight at me, I brake, she turns just enough to avoid a collision, shouts "treehugger!" at me as she passes and continues on her way on the wrong side of the road. Make of that what you will.

Dark blue BMW 5-series LM07 FKJ, passing Sciennes / Sick Kids through the chicanes. I was doing about 23 in the 20 zone. Forced it's way past me through one of the chicanes. Windows were open so I let the 2 sharply dressed young gents know. Zoomed off up Roseneath Street to Marchmont Crescent.
