For three decades cycle campaigning has been dominated by the vehicular cycling dogma epitomised by John Franklin, while calls for good infrastructure have been suppressed and sabotaged. It was under the anti-infrastructuralists’ watch that the crap got built. Anti-infrastructuralists must acknowledge that their strategy has failed to get people cycling, failed to defend the right to the road, and failed to prevent crap cycle lanes being built.

Shouldn't this be strong attack on anti-separatists?

A very poorly written article. On the substance - I would disagree wholeheartedly. Scotland does not lack for high quality cycling strategies, design guidance and so on. It does not lack dedicated cycle campaigners who are aware of what works in encouraging cycling.

The problems encountered in the development of high quality cycle infrastructure are alomost always down to a lack of political leadership and funding.

It seems ridiculous to blame some (imaginary?) sub-set of cycle campaignes for the failings of local and national government.

Surely a strong attack on "anti-infrastructuralists"? I think the author might be a "separatist".

Quite frankly this tribalism (real or fabricated) is bizarre - traffic free cycle paths are marvelous, but can't possibly go everywhere one might wish to travel.

Yes, they should be as good as possible, and yes, cycles should be treated as well as vehicles on the road.

But then my goal isn't to increase modal share, when I might vehemently prefer one to the other, rather it's to get from A to B safely and enjoyably!

"Shouldn't this be strong attack on anti-separatists?"

    TRUE!

I was over-simplyfying for the sake of a snappy headline!

"Surely a strong attack on "anti-infrastructuralists"? I think the author might be a "separatist"."

Yes, I think subliminally I was thinking that the most vociferous were the 'we don't want separation' people so this is the opposite!

As some of you may know, I've just come back from France where there were a few cyclists about. Also a lot of "infrastructure", both good and bad.

It was interesting to me that the "inter-city" style provision, like the newly widened section of path near the A90 on NCN1, was well used but in towns, where there are a lot of quite complex road setups, much traffic and pavement "infrastructure" we could only dream of, people still rode on the road.

Perhaps there are "anti-infrastructuralists" but it's not clear to me that these aren't in fact simply realists. We won't get a network of roads parallel to the existing road network, instead we'll get Crap Cycle Lane of the month...

    Splitter, surely?

It's all a bit Life of Brian: People's Front of Judea vs. Judean Popular People's Front, the Campaign for a Free Galilee, and the Popular Front of Judea. I propose that we debate that we should not waste our time debating so much... (c) Monty Python.
