Check out the Copenhagenize videos of winter cycling and you'll spot those mini street sweepers out patrolling the cycle routes AS THE SNOW IS FALLING and a steady shower of swept snow shooting out to the side to leave practically 'black' path in its wake.

Last winter I tried an experiment with the footway outside - as soon as the snow had fallen - before it got hard packed by passing traffic I took a stiff broom and swept it clear - very easy with fresh fallen snow on stone slabs. During the day it rapidly dried out (no clear ice to catch the unwary) and was safe and clear to walk over.

So 2 details arise - for the cost of bringing out staff and the fuel for the street sweepers we could drastically reduce the need to put down salt/grit with fallen snow. and paths could be cleared rapidly and efficiently with street sweepers which would normally be laid up ... because of the weather!

So I suggest a regime - snowfall overnight - early patrol with street sweepers set to throw snow outwards rather than in to the centre (normal street sweeping). Snowfall during the day. get out patrolling to keep paths clear .
