Is it contagious?

Got my rain trousers (previous thread) in the mail yesterday. Decided in the end to go for the novara headwinds which are basically lycra designed for bad weather. And they are soo comfy. Found myself last night checking out cool bike tops and putting the trousers on this morning (in case weather as bad as yesterday) thinking about cycle shoes and jackets.

Now, I've never been accused of being 'cycle chic' (or chic at all), but I do mostly wear normal clothes. So how does one little bit of lycra do this to me?

And, does it all look really dumb on a commuter anyway (need for racer!...other thread)

I've gently eased myself into cycle-specific clothing ownership through picking up the odd item in sales and finding it more comfortable or convenient than normalwear, starting with a non-cotton T-shirt in 2004, continuing through baggies-with-inner-padded-short and most recently venturing into cleated feet.

I still have no visible lycra except in winter when my legwarmers poke out from beneath by baggies and my arm-warmers protrude from underneath my T-shirt. I was going to get some proper (hopefully bestirrupped) sale tights for under the shorts this year as the zip at the bottom of the legwarmers is prone to popping/creeping open and the combination of the bottom-of-legwarmers/top-of-socks elastication resulted in embarrassing accidental partial depilation on my lower legs.

Well it is really comfortable and practical. No getting away from it!

The 'problem' is (perhaps) the word Lycra.

Apart from the pejoratively associated word lout, there is somehow an assumption of yellow or roadie or(?)

There's probably Lycra in your underwear, jeans etc. already!

There are 'cycle specific' clothes for good, and other, reasons.

Key points are comfort, comfort (as in being happy 'to be seen' wearing them), waterproof, and de-sweating.

The latter is only an issue (for 'normal' people riding bikes) if you get overheated - either by wearing too many layers (not stopping to take one off) or cycling 'too fast' for your clothes or standing in the world.

Of course the last bit relates to whether you leave one place in enough time to get to the next 'comfortably'. Are there two classes of cyclist - organised and late?

People new/returning to cycling have the added problem of not knowing their fitness, (even 'fit' people can find cycling difficult/different because of using unfamiliar muscles), capabilities - speed/distance etc.

Some people decide it's 'too difficult for me' and give up.

Some do that after buying 'all the right gear'.

So it's a bit like the advice on the current new bike thread/DIY - do it in steps (@wingpig above) and do what suits - jeans and Ts, business suit, full-on TdeF clone - with or without 'change when you get there' options.

The 'problem' is (perhaps) the word Lycra.

It is after all a meaningless, computer-generated trademark. I think we should begin to refer to it under the generic term Spandex instead. At least that has some meaning in that it is an anagram of Expands.

Spandex is even worse! How about Elastane?

"Who are you and what have you done with the real wingpig?"

I can confirm that WP is the same (virtual) entity as when they joined CCE in 2009.

It would appear that CCE is corrupted/ing.
