There was some discussion a while ago about ads on the back of buses.

EBC used to use this one.

This one is used in Manchester as part of the Love Your Bike campaign

LYB is surveying people about "Buses and Bikes Sharing Road Space"

"This survey is being carried out to help get a better understanding of the perceptions and experiences of people who cycle in Greater Manchester and share the roads with buses"

Maybe CCE Forum/Spokes should run something similar. It's often said on here (with justification) that Lothian Bus drivers are generally considerate. Quantifying this and comparing with a city elsewhere might be instructive.

Great ideas. And sorry to add a negative note, but has anyone else noticed a rise in dodgy maneuvers from the private hire cars? I've had a few taxis driving in a somewhat aggressive manner lately too, but at least you can see them, and they are professionals. I've not seen anything illegal, I just often uncomfortable on the road around them...and am not sure why. In my home town taxis had a bad rep as dodgy drivers, but over here I've always found them to be pretty good.

"Regardless of the fares structures they ALL Black Cab and PHC Drivers should be put through a much tougher and more safety aware driving Course as the standards of many are a disgrace, it is a wonder they passed their initial driving test."

We arrived in Edinburgh from Eritrea on 2 Jan 2003; it was bitterly cold and nothing was open. The next day we had to go out to the airport and collect some things we had shipped out. We had good luck in our taxi driver, who took us out to the freight office, waited for us, and took us home again for quite a reasonable rate. He was a keen mountain-biker and gave us lots of recommendations for things to do - all of which were good (except for the Chinese place on Lothian road, which has thankfully closed). Doubtless this explains why I still think of taxi drivers as bike-friendly.

I have found those private cab drivers to be seriously lowering the standards of driving in Edinburgh. Although I have had a couple of aggressive incidents with black cab drivers, on the whole they seem to be pretty good and seem to be very alert to cyclists on the road. They have taken my bike and me home quite happily on a couple of occasions.

They are meant to, but they are usually remarkably OK about it given potential for dirt/damage.

They take very drunk people home all the time. Much more potential for damage from that.

Your average driver of a hackney cab is usually very happy to chat to non-car users such as cyclists as we give them business, also if you phone to book one there should not be a problem about taking your bike. As a much younger man my very good friend big Davie Whyte once helped me move flats by loading everything in a cab. Driver more bemused than annoyed. Once, again as a younger man I was roped into helping in the CHill Out zone at the Rezerrection Rave at Ingliston. After my shift finished I was so freaked by the whole event I decide to exit by climbing a rather large fence, I landed on the other side and there was a taxi waiting for me. I loved that taxi driver.
