So do you or do you not allow typos? It's a strange thing to start talking about when I all I was saying was hello.

ah. that was a classic CCE 'how fast can this thread be diverted from its original topic' move. Can be annoying. but we've all had it happen/done it. sometimes we have competitions....

must admit, I also find it kind of funny that TS can be such sticklers that they have such a long list of do's and don'ts, but then not bother to correct such an obvious mistake in their first line!

    Hi Bikey12,

I'm DaveC, I live in Fife and cycle in when I can. I ride two bikes, a Dawes Galaxy and a Cotic >X< cyclocross (with or without road tyres).

I'm not a member of any road clubs and mainly stick to cycle paths (avoiding busy roads).

I hope you'll feel very welcome here. We discuss all sorts of topics mainly cycle related. We have a monthly coffee meetup at a place on Middle Meadow Walk around 7.30 (yawn) am just around payday :-) Just hang around and read a few other threads to get a guage on how friendly we REALLY are!!

If you see me on the road/cycle path saying hi & giving you a wave, do return the greeting.

    DaveC

EDIT, I make all sorts of typo's generally when browsing from my smart phone (with my huge grubby fingers)

Ahhh Bikey12 has been caught by cce thread drift (rip current?). Don't worry about it mate it happens, we're generally a friendly bunch, don't mention h*****s I did once and very definitely didn't get away with it ;).

"It's a strange thing to start talking about when I all I was saying was hello."

You were saying hello. The mistakes/typos picked up on were merely on the website you linked to. Had it not been for the length of the list of rules the errors might have been overlooked. Highlighting errors on someone's first post would be very rude, which is why no-one here does it, unless it's to point out silly grammatical errors in the postings of spambots.

    Perhaps the rules should be:
    No personal insults.
    No swearing.
Stick to the ooh look there's a buzzard.

...but that would be to try and codify behaviour which has evolved naturally and is much better for having done so.

H*****S???? Whats this? Why wasn't I told about this issue? What is the issue?

Anyway I'm looking at getting a new helmnet as my current one is getting a bit wiffy and 'old hat' (pun intended!!)

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

@bikey12 & Thunderthigh, As others have said, the dig wasn't directed at you guys, stick around and I'm sure you'll find a lot that's worthwhile and some fun threads.

As to the question about bikes/types of riding, I'm a (multi-mode)commuter and sometimes a lesiure cyclist, commonly found on a Surly LHT or a Dahon Folder (my Q-bike for silly commuter racing mwahahaha), less often on a Giant OCR and even less often on a Charge Duster MTB (sigh). It should be pointed out that the Charge is a lovely MTB which suffers from a lousy off road rider plonked on top!

Having been around here for a good few months now I know better than mention h****ts.... oh damn... I just did, maybe I'll get away with it if I stay really quiet for a bit..... :-o

Note: for the benefit of anyone unaware of the ongoing joke/s about cycle helmets, many people on here feel quite strongly about the merits/demerits of wearing cycle helmets and the issues of freedom of choice/compulsion.
In the past this has led to, erm, "heated" discussion. Given the sensible and balanced style of the rest of the forum the topic is generally avoided, in order to avoid upset, in the manner of not discussing politics or religion in some pubs ;-)

Doesn't stop it being referred to in passing in a jokey fashion of course!

I think we've got EVERYTHING covered here. Including recumbents, which is just weird.

Says the owner of the beige bike. :-p And my monstrousbike is not weird! Mind you, it does have a tailsock on it now.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just buy yourself a Bell V1 Pro, Dave. They last forever, judging by the numbers I still see in use these days.

And bikey12 and ThunderThigh, hi! There's a thread about Top Trumps and awesomepower somewhere in the archives, and feel free to add your thoughts on bike shops too.

Hi bikey12 and ThunderThigh. Enjoy the forum. It's often useful, sometimes eclectic and very friendly.

    Arellcat - tailsock?

DaveC - Giro Atmos, very pricey but fits really well and I like to think it has a "messanger of the Gods*" look about it.

    * Mercury obviously wasn't a grumpy, middle aged Scottish bike commuter, but such thoughts make November commutes that little bit nicer.

"Stick to the ooh look there's a buzzard"

Funny that - we were just talking about those on our Sunday ride (search chimney...)

    Didn't see any though!

As to a new rule - so you're saying 'when in trouble talk birds'(?)

"so you're saying 'when in trouble talk birds'(?)"

I was going to try and incorporate other popular topic-drift magisteria along the lines of
"Stick to the ooh look, there's a buzzard on top of that chimney."
    "That's not a buzzard, it's a 1983 VogelLüge type IIa attack warbler and it's not a chimney, it's a brick-weathering tower."
but reduced it to just the bird thing.

    'when in trouble talk birds'(?)"

My mother-in-law's family had similar rules. They were keen ornithologists, but it also became a family joke...

  15. Strangely the wildlife thread has never drifted into helmets...

Hmmm. Tricky. Perhaps start with a description of a spot, continue "...but it was too far away to make out whether it was a male or female and I couldn't use my binoculars as I had my helmet on and it gets in their way" at which point someone with a strongly-held opinion can barge in.

Maybe if the discussion were to move towards spotting particularly angry crows or Bonxie?

    Posted 13 years ago #
  18. Ah yes, Bonxies. Good plan. Why aren't the RSPB promoting the wearing of helmets?!!? ;)

Possible drift OT Wildlife or Technology straight into a helmet argument?

Angry birds - some of the pigs wear helmets.

Actually Dave C, that could be your answer to your helmet search - the pigs wear those hells angel type german WWII helmets........

    Dilemma, dilemma

So many mentions of H*s without enough ***s.

    But no polarisation.

And this thread was exploded in so many OT directions.

    BUT 'we' don't mind that.

    So I can't close it...

    Ah

    I know

Oy, oy, magister, or perhaps thought police...do other forums have as many rules as the trail Scotland site? I am not entirely sure that sharing information about the site's existence is not a contravention of one of their codes of practice, at least not sharing without asking/seeking the team members (which does not include users) permission. Ridunculous!! Yes, you will receive a warning for any infringement, phooey!! They need to get over themselves frankly, worse than being back at school, will I put my hand up to ask permission, and what is that bit about posting in English only - support available elsewhere is that using babelfish or google translate? Double phooey!! Big raspberry...

I know it is extremely bad form to answer or respond to your own commentary but I could not resist... on likening the trial (sic) Scotland forum to joining some secular religious cult, perhaps the wee frees comes closest or some real bunch of weirdos, faceless, total control freaks, who are jumping on the back of mountain biking as a means of making money. So the rules are, hand over all your possessions to me including your thought processes, you shall obey all the rules at all times or be prepared to face the wrath of a slapped wrist, public humiliation, and being thrown off, you will only post where we (the faceless members - does that ring a bell)think you should. Thou shalt have no humour, not use emoticons or punctuation marks to emphasise how excited you find something. I think as it is promoting Scotland the use of Scottish vernacular should be adhered to at all time, and not English...i.e. (another sin) like e.g. Angus Ogg, ra Broons or perhaps Oor Wullie, spelling like oot, troot, radge, irn bru. Anyway suffice to say I will not be joining their forum, which is probably a blessed relief for them ;-D. BTW chdot I think you should have a members counter, number of posters, who is accessing the account at any one time....you know!!!! LOL xxooxx

I would like to apologise to our new members from the other website. I am from the west of scotland where what we think of as humour can be perceived in the east as unfriendly.

Some people on this are talking absolute nonsense.
The forum rules on TrailScotland are generic PHPBB3 rules. They are on most PHPBB3 based forums as standard.

@bikey12 - I just read back through the string [it is a slow news night]. You quote me on the typos but in the quote I am referring to my partner who is a very strict person on spelling/grammar etc. She would not be seen dead on this website [my kids call it Bike MSN] As to this forum we generally do not pick up on spelling etc.

There is some irony in using a prescriptive and lengthy list of rules on a website [though thanks to you tonight I have learnt about phpbb] but missing a spelling mistake in the first rule. But I can also see that some of us here [e.g. me] are too sarcastic and given that we don't pick up on spelling it was not very friendly to pick up on the spelling mistake in the rule on the other website. I apologise again.
