The project, launched last August, examines how long the vehicles can run on one charge, how cost effective they are and how they perform in different conditions.

Experts said results of the study, being run by Jewel and Esk College, will be crucial to the vehicles becoming a viable option for motorists.

Researchers said they want to build public confidence in electric cars and ultimately make them “mainstream” across Scotland.

Four cars were initially distributed in Edinburgh and Dalkeith but a further five have since been put into use. Three charging points have been built by students and staff at the college.

I wonder how many non-subsidised-as-part-of-a-research-project electric cars there are on the road in Scotland?

Where did they get the photo from that goes with that picture? Who is Alexander Skeaping and where is he? London? Dublin?

Some wacky comments on that article too.

Why the energy industry is so invested in climate change denial

In paris they have a "Velieb" type electric car system with loads of cars around the city at charging points.

It's a really cool - very visible idea. Paris has got it right IMHO. It's not about getting people to own electric cars. It's about getting people to think about using cars not owning them

    Yes.

City Car Club obviously has users, but needs to be more 'popular', easier to use(?), cheaper(?).

No doubt small, electric, cars will attract more/different people.

But Edinburgh is still waiting for the cycle hire bit!

I don't think cycle hire in Ed is the answer. There are too many obvious hills that people would use the bikes to go down but not up. Plus it's far easier and better to own a bike in Ed than it is in London when often you're so far out of the city it makes sense to grab a bike in just the middle. In paris the city is so flat and the infrastructure so good (bike stations everywhere) that it works well. Edinburgh would be a waste of money I thinks.

Electric cycle hire? Power up the hills, freewheel down and have automatic charging when they are in the rack maybe...?

cb - that photo of car/charging station was taken in London last April.

He would need a rather long extension to recharge it up here...........
