City residents could be given the option of renting a secure bike locker on the street outside their flat, if a new council plan is given the go-ahead.
City councillors are to consider proposals to spend £50,000 on improving bike parking facilities in six residential areas of the city

It's good they are getting around to this. I hope the trial works out.

If the pilot is deemed a success, Council officers confirmed that this could mean that secure cycle parking in residential areas could be managed in future by a social enterprise or a private company.

If this means further investment and a network of sites (such as with City Car Club) this would be very positive.

That is great and very overdue. I hope they don't just "consider" and actually do! Even just the Sheffield racks would make a huge difference. The last two tenements I lived in had railings missing due to bikes being sawn off.

Sadly, cast iron balusters don't even need sawing..

If you lock a bike in a stair include the bannister.

    And from The Scotsman

    ...which also mentions:

"City leaders provided extra money to promote cycling last month and it is hoped that 100 extra on-street bike parking spaces will be installed by the end of March to improve access to shops and offices, while new solar lights will be fitted on the Union Canal towpath from Craiglockhart to the Water of Leith. I live in a "factor controlled estate" so I doubt that we'd be able to get any of the council built stuff.

There was discussion about not keeping bikes in stairwells which I agree with in some of the buildings but also people suggested not having bikes in the halls at all. This was countered by a suggestion of giving up two parking spots for a bike shed that was locked and roofed. this was met with absolute uproar. So I guess I'm interested to see where these will be sited!

Oh the whinging has already started in the Hootsmon comments. 'Take your bike into your house' seems to be a popular suggestion. Clearly commenters are untroubled by thousands of parked cars blocking the streets, but park your bicycle in a shed? Scandalous!

  8. Yeah, I had to comment on someone as well incorrectly giving results of the bus lane motorbike trial in London.

But I think I'll stay out of the argument. There's a 'cyclist' on there with the 'cyclists don't use lights, ride through red lights, ride on pavements and don't wear helmets' line as well. I'm not entirely sure what that has to do with the provision of secure bike parking.

Also, the fallback argument of the council 'giving in' to the 'cycling lobby' and somehow finding the money for the scheme. £50,000... In the context that's peanuts. Anyone have the whole of Edinburgh roads budget to hand? With a breakdown between cycling and motoring infrastructure?

  9. "Now wee see why so many roundabouts were removed and traffic lights installed at great expense to Edinburgh;'s citizenry. Not to ease congestion etc etc, BUT to please his pals and lobbyists @ SPOKES then."

Thanks for highlighting that. I have just waded through a cesspit of bile. Lovely.

  11. Hurrah! My comment got deleted!

I find it strange that one can accuse officials of downright corruption and lying, effectively committing a sweeping gesture of defamation and not be deleted; but make a joke that the virulent anti-Spokes chap's wife may be having an affair with someone from Spokes and it's a 'disgusting sexual slur' that must be removed.

Well, that's the patriarchy for you. Women's sexuality belongs to their husbands, you see, and if you're suggesting she's up to no good, it reflects badly on him.

    Other interpretations are available.

  13. I also note that the comments page has become such a pardoy of itself that Repetitive (Low-Intelligence) Fuel Head has been read by a couple of commenters at least as a serious contribution...
