  1. That took all of 60 seconds. Copy/Paste/Alter occasional words.

Trust me, I can give you an epic poem in 20 minutes. It won't necessarily be good. But. Linked to one on Facebook I did last Thursday to film for YouTube for two friends getting married in Oz - writing to memorising to filming to editing, about an hour.

I wish it was a quiet day in the office (and tomorrow we're at a local school doing our CSR bit on why kids would want to be lawyers....).

    "The Broons were green"

  6. Apparently Three Lions was hugely popular in Germany - went to number 1...

    ---------

Well, I just come down on my Specialized
I'm not very big but eat loads of pies
The lasses shout as I go by "donald, where's your lycra?"

    Let the gear wind high
    Let the gear wind low
Through the streets on a bike I go
    All the lasses shout hello
    Donald where's yer lycra?

A lassie took me to the time trial
I hadnae raced in quite a while
Over the line I coughed up bile
    Cause I was'nae wearin' lycra

    Let the gear wind high
    Let the gear wind low
Through the streets on a bike I go
    All the lasses shout hello
    Donald where's yer lycra?

To wear SKY kit is my delight
I'm never wrong 'cause Brad's always right
But the highlanders would get a fright
If they saw me wearin' lycra

    Let the gear wind high
    Let the gear wind low
Through the streets on a bike I go
    All the lasses shout hello
    Donald where's yer lycra?

Well, I was ridin' on my bike
Passed a BSO ridden by a tyke
Shouted 'Gie ye a race if ye like!'
And I left without my lycra

    Let the gear wind high
    Let the gear wind low
Through the streets on a bike I go
    All the lasses shout hello
    Donald where's yer lycra?

    Let the gear wind high!
    Let the gear wind low..
Through the streets on a bike I go..
    Donald, where's yer lycra..?

You? In front of a camera? The very idea! etc. of course you can. You might need to westcoastify your accent to get the more strained rhymes to work.

  14. Summa tlike this (lots of wee references in this for my mate who was getting married - we're movie geeks with a similar taste, which account for many, but a few non-movie things as well).

You don't even have to change the words:

To a Cyclist (from a driver):

    I'm truly sorry man's dominion
    has broken nature's social union
    and justifies that ill opinion
that makes thee start at me
    thine poor earth born companion
    and fellow mortal.

I agree that the slogan had issues, I just thought it would get the creative juices flowing. Seems that it has. A song to advertise the campaign could be good. It could go viral! :-)

Just thinking, this video (http://youtu.be/VW0vSPA5-V4) or videos like it could help as well. The filtering part not only shows the futility of cycling, it shows that cycling as it stands, on a road like that is not for the masses. I wouldn't expect my kids to do that!! (Mind you, they are only 6, 4 and 2!!)

'utility' of cycling rather than 'futility'? I know you've had a couple of visits from the Puncture Fairy, but it's not that bad!

LOL! I meant to say the futility of driving, not cycling!

@chdot Not sure I understand you re Dutch infrastructure - don't they study what's necessary in the place they're improving (and design appropriate and effective ways of making it safe for children, old people and everyone else to cycle there more safely and more pleasantly)? They don't just parachute in some alien infrastructure. If we can make Edinburgh a safe and inviting enough place to cycle that the whole population feels it might like to pop down to the shops on the bike - without worry or fear - the job will be done, and Dutch (and other) traffic planners would be well content with that.

Yes - but there have been some traffic planners and, perhaps, campaigners who overemphasise infrastructure changes without thinking so much about 'a bigger picture' including education, enforcement etc.

The Herald story you linked to is most encouraging where the need to encourage walking and cycling and reduce car use is seen as desirable/necessary to reduce deaths due to air pollution.

If that includes better education for drivers, and better enforcement of driving rules & laws, then count me in!

The Dutch Embassy in the US has been doing events whereby Dutch traffic engineers meet their US counterparts to discuss what could be done for cycling. I believe that was one of the impulses behind the recent Chicago separated lanes (which look nothing like Dutch ones physically but still provide nice protected space for cyclists and were astoundingly cheap compared to the London efforts). Maybe seeing if we could get them do something similar with the Scottish government would be an idea?

Infrastructure and laws privileging bicycles over cars in The Netherlands, were borne of unique circumstances in the early 1970s: hundreds of children killed on their bikes every year, mass demonstrations, car free Sundays, plus an oil crisis. We can learn from the Dutch, but treating their story as a metanarrative, as though strategies that they employed can be repeated where politics differ, is folly.
