    Dave posted this

"I have all my bikes set up with 'euro style' brakes so that I can give that signal while having the main brake to hand."

As part of another thread on signalling.

Of course the left/rear brake convention (reversed in US and Europe) is due to the 'fact' that putting on the front brake (alone) was 'likely' to lead to people going over the handlebars.

This certainly can be the case with inexperienced (and light) children jamming on a brake in panic.

Or people going back to mtb brakes after a while on road bikes. Doesn't help when the mtb comes with squishy suspension.

I have a polo bike set up with a coaster brake and the front brake on the left so I can mallet with my right hand.

Is that 'normal'? Had assumed polo bikes would be fixed.

Whatever works for you really. Most folk do ride fixed at polo but i found a nexus 3 speed back wheel with a coaster brake. The advantage being that you can cycle to the park in a 'normal 'gear then play polo in a 'granny' gear.

    Sensible

Some cycle speedway people cycle to races.

    Illegal and....

All my bikes' brakes are set up as right/front, left/rear; my trike only has front brakes and one lever.

The gear shifters on my main bike are set up as right/front, left/rear, which lets me change down on the sprockets and brake harder at the same time. My other bikes' gears are right/rear, left/front, which only confuses everyone else. :-)

I read somewhere that the only people who go over the front of their bikes are the ones who don't usually use their front brake, so are unprepared for the fact that it works so well!

I'm the opposite. I once rode a 200km audax with my rear brake undone (from having the bike in the car) and only noticed when I took the wheel off to put it back in the car at the end - oops!!

"Just did an interview with BBC in the park, I rode a white bike for the first time, a dog ran in front of my path, I had a coffee in one hand and I pulled the brakes pretty hard and went straight over the handlebars."
