I think the moderate easterly this morning caused a lot of cyclists on the towpath to give me absolutely no quarter. Not of course Snowy or Jdanielp. On way home, wind dropped so I could not get them back even if I wanted to.

@gembo you're welcome. I had assumed that there was no wind and I was just feeling uncharacteristically perky this morning.

Was mine on the tow path this evening. Very nearly took out someone travelling west because I was going a tad too fast and didn’t see them because I was probably a tad too close to the person in front who was on the large side. If it was anyone here I apologise profusely. I apologise anyway but even more so if you are here. Several bads at once.

  4. Was the closest I've ever come to resorting to violence tonight.

Eastbound princes street, a bloke who looked like a lumberjack riding for deliveroo. Completely unlit mountain bike. Overtook me just as I got a green light at. He looks to cut in ahead of me the outside lane is tram only. I slow and say "on you go". He shouts "don't tell me what to do!" and rams me in to the kerb!

    Completely unhinged.

Continued to cycle around me and tried to get a rise (he almost did) all the way to Waverley bridge, even riding through red lights then waiting for me!

    Completely unhinged.

Beware a lumberjack lookie-likey deliveroo cyclist!

there's got to be a way to get deliveroo to take this more seriously. i see a lot of their cyclists being completely normal, but when people with their logo are going lightless and dangerous, you think they'd care about the association with their brand?

is it legit to suggest that they should be issuing lights to their riders along with jackets and packs?

Perhaps the "our deliverers will whoosh your products to you excitingly quickly at any cost" thing has more appeal. Motor-vehiclevices don't seem fussed about reputational damage from shoddy parking and dangerous driving, if La Favorita and DHL are anything to go by.

Deliveroo do test riders prior to engaging them, but it is done by another Deliveroo rider, not an employee, and the test is for speed and navigational abilities.

If Deliveroo have a monkeys about this sort of thing they could consider putting an identifying number on the Deliveroo backpacks, so that people could report poor behaviour by riders. Too many complaints -> you don't get any more jobs. If you try to argue that you'd lent your backpack to a pal to do the job for you, same result on the grounds of gross misconduct.

Is there any way that Deliveroo (or Uber, for that matter) can *actually* know that the person doing a job is the person they think it is?

    @ejstubbs

All Deliveroo deliveries are tracked by a smartphone GPS app. They could easily establish the operative responsible, or at least the bank account linked to the delivery from the time and place.

That's interesting to know. Suggests that these things might actually be worth reporting.

  12. Ive actually had many a blether with deliveroo cyclists whilst waiting at lights etc. Most have seemed pretty reasonable folk going about their business and trying to stay safe on the roads.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to find this individual had robbed a Deliveroo cyclist of his rucksack. He certainly didn't seem in a hurry to deliver, and I really wouldn't want him going to my door.

Should delivery drivers/cyclist be PVG checked like taxi drivers etc?

Good info. I'm off this afternoon. I'll contact Deliveroo.

The bus behind would have caught it on its CCTV. wish I'd thought to get the bus's details.

@ECT - that is one for the annals. As you say you can chat to Deliveroo / Uber riders and they generally seem ok. Don't see so many Jinn rider's now?
    Jinn - vs - Deliveroo

I just overtook a bus on George IV Bridge. Bus was at stop indicating left to suggest not moving. As I squeezed through between it an queue of stationery traffic it moved off. Had at least 50cm gap but must have looked frightening narrow. Had lights and all. Generally let buses out of stops when they indicate. This one though was only wedging in a little bit forward towards Mound. Bike lane was clear after.

Character on a black MTB this morning, RLJed at the end of Angle Park Terrace for absolutely no apparent reason other than couldn't be arsed to stop, then mounted the pavement and headed left up Harrison Road.

Sadly for his happy-go-lucky state of mind, the vehicle which had been following him at a respectful distance turned out to be an unmarked police car. I don't think I've ever seen anyone pulled over for either offence by plod in a car before. It certainly caused a bit of a stir on the bus - though that might have been more due to excitement caused by the cop car's brief display of blue lights and squawk on the siren, rather than surprise at seeing the road traffic laws actually being enforced.

If disguised polis are going to make a habit of lurking near that junction they can be assured of plenty of "customers" using all modes.

Until recently I saw around one drivist per week get flashed by the Slateford Road red light cameras, though I think those might have broken down in January. No flashes since then but behaviour certainly hasn't improved!

Me being a total eejit this evening turning right out of Montague Street onto Clerk street in the dark with eldest tagged on.

Felt flustered by car behind us nudging forward so went before checking as thoroughly as I should have - vehicle driving north is an ambulance - I didn't see the blue lights and underestimated the speed - made it brake I think. Had to go for it with a supplicatory wave and dive into the bus stop - still really annoyed at myself for not going the longer and safer way round...

The tall person on the upright bicycle who steath-passed me on the towpath just now. I happened to shoulder-check just as they were starting their unannounced overtake so hastily swerved to the left to give them space. As they drew alongside I asked "Do you not have a bell?" which was ignored. I repeated the question before noticing that they did have a bell so instead asked, "You do have a bell, why don't you use it?" which was also ignored. They went under the next bridge without ringing their bell (I rang mine to compensate) before turning off at the next exit (they did at least indicate), which meant that I had to brake as they slowed down. Pointless MGIF.

@jdanielp, very tall and very upright? Like almost dutch, see him most mornings, takes up room (he can't help that) does pelt along. However, no issues as such as he is riding towards me

You should have tung a lung-ed your beautiful bell and peace and tranquility would have unfolded.

Their bell may be broken, my bell is broken the 3rd bell my bike has had since 2015 they always break and I almost never use it as normally on open road where no one can hear it. A few trips to Falkirk on the canal and bell is broke. The canal eats bells.

@gembo that's the one. Lots of bright yellow jacket/helmet etc.

@Ed1 true, although I would have appreciated an "On your right!" and/or an explanation when I queried this if so.

The sunbathing courier, now sporting a Deliveroo container, cycling along the footway on Atholl Crescent then the wrong way through the one-way to Rutland Square.

Innocent Tunnel, about 1830 this evening deliberate attempt to run me off the path. He was down downhill, me up.

Came so close I was braced for impact. 100% deliberate, we were the only 2 bikes in the tunnel.

Wasn't a case of not seeing me as I have that ridiculous Exposure MaxxD thing, which even when on lowest setting and pointed downwards has the power of a million suns or something.

    baffling.

The antisocial child-man who passed me, from behind, with no audible warning, on the narrowest bit of the fenced-in pavement by the road works on Haymarket Terrace. He then proceeded to cycle across the pedestrian crossing at the top of Haymarket Yards, and through the tram stop, passing the No Entry signs on the way.

    Thanks @ejstubbs

I may be paranoid, but the other day i overtook a cyclist on a very wide path--he was far on his side, and i went very far on the other. he'd been cycling steadily and there was no one ahead of us, so i didn't ring--there was a good metre between us.
before that, i never heard his bell.
after that, i heard it nearly continuously. i looked back to see that he was ringing for pretty much everything he came near. I had to slow down for some dogs, meaning he got quite near me again, so I heard this for most of the time I was on the path.

i wonder if he was sending a message.

@the Canuck, my reading of @ejstubbs is that the inaudible pass was one thing, but then the pedestrian crossing, tram stop, no entry sign were some other things

Obviously just coz u r paranoid don't mean they ain't out to get ya
