The ned in trackie bottoms and a mountain bike who did a wheelie straight through a red light at Jocks Lodge on the way home while his pal cycled on the pavement on what looked like a kids BMX bike.

Boys I had A Strong Word with on tow path. The rear one on BMX was cycling into the path of oncoming pedestrians and then skidding and dodging them. At one point his bike was going in the canal but I used my powerful mindfulness techniques.

Me, this morning. I was "wobbling", "all over the place", and "can barely ride the damn thing". All of which made this overtake perfectly acceptable, apparently: https://youtu.be/tWDax7S1JiM

And telekinetically put him in the canal?

@Frenchy your riding was clearly so alarming, youtube won't allow it to be seen

@Frenchy - clearly they have very high standards. From now on I am going to complain about anyone in the swimming pool not performing Olympic standard synchronised swimming poses.

Clearly such 'terrible cycling' is worthy of a punishment pass and if the cyclist gets hit it's clearly their fault as they were asking for it and pay no road tax.

Sadly that is the mindset of too many drivers :(

    Me yesterday evening.

I was too busy watching the campervan, since the sun was behind me and I wasn't sure he could see me, and then head-checking that nobody was undertaking me on the exit (which has happened before), and then by the time I saw the pedestrians crossing, I was already leaning left into the turn for the exit and couldn't shift my bodyweight to swerve right fast enough.

That's more rubbish road crossing than rubbish cycling :)

It's very strange that people seem to think that nothing can hurt them when they start crossing roads these days!

the pedestrians were already crossing some more than half way so would tend to think proportionally more rubbish cycling than walking

Last night. I'm heading up Tarvit to Kings. There's a car in right turn lane and a bike in ASZ on my left. I'm in my usual central position.

But bike on left is a bit weird. Fully to my left, but with front wheel sort of angling right and rider staring weirdly into distance. teenagery/hipster-esque.

Lights start to change. He's staring. and wheel slightly blocking my angle for junction. i say 'lights changing'. he looks at me, then launches himself into my path.

    Apparently he was turning right?!?

he's going to get himself killed.

Idiot riding on pavement and cutting up older chap walking with stick. I felt guitly about not having words with him and then discovered he was in my swim lane and I still wussed out of talking to him about it.

    Triathletes... <rule2>holes.

older chap should have stuck walking stick in spokes. har har. well no, the bike might have fallen on him.

not really rubbish cycling, but lately i seem to have repeatedly gotten behind ppl wearing techie gear on prime bikes, who i thought would be faster than me off the lights, but they're riding clipped in so they are really slow to start.

It is annoying to be stuck going slowly when i would like to be off as quickly as possible, but they generally end up going faster than me, so if i cut in front they would end up overtaking again and i'd feel ridiculous. (currently cycling in crocs, not very techie)

The Give Way markings at the east end of Ellen's Glen Road are long gone, so someone waiting to turn into Gilmerton Road rolled all the way to the cycle lane demarcation line before stopping. Since I was in the cycle lane at the time, this was problematic.

They were riding the same model of bike as I have though, so I forgive them.

@Frenchy I didn't think the markings were that badly worn, and you can still see the cycle lane, surely?

[Slightly off topic] that whole junction is a mess, and coming South down Gilmerton Road into Ellen's Glen Road is made particularly exciting by the awful road surface going into the right turn lane, coupled with oncoming traffic veering into it to go around the parked cars on the corner. Add to that the fact that you need to indicate right to avoid idiots trying to overtake you here, and it gets even more interesting...

the canuck: who i thought would be faster than me off the lights

Clipping-in and then getting those big wheels turning takes time. A Brompton or other small-wheeled bike should be faster away from the lights.

This was over a year ago, and they haven't improved in the meantime.

The cyclist looked right at me and still rolled into my path, so I don't want to put all the blame on the lack of road markings, but it doesn't help.

Agreed that the junction is a mess.

Yesterday evening, north on the Roseburn. A man was waiting to pull away from the edge of the WoL viaduct, and waited until I had passed. Shortly afterwards, after a series of slowings/waitings for pedestrians/cyclists and in anticipation of another, I though to check behind, to find him up my mudguard. By his demeanour, when urged with some vexation to desist, he apparently didn't think that what he was doing was stupid. Shortly afterwards he performed a classic overtaking-someone-when-the-path-narrowed-under-a-bridge-when-there-was-another-cyclist-approaching-rapidly-from-the-opposite-direction, underlining my opinion.

That Ellen's Glen junction is a 'mare on foot as well. Poor sight-lines and its extra wide mouth mean you have to walk up it a bit it in order to cross safely and carry on up or down Gilmerton Rd.

i have big wheels too! possibly i am just very fast/overly competitive when the light goes green. (certainly not very fast anywhere else)

i'm working with international students right now, and one reported to a colleague that she's been told off three times now while cycling. i'd love to be able to work out if she's genuinely cycling super-stupid, or just unlucky enough to have met three over-entitled drivers in one week.

Perhaps she is erring on the side of not needing headgear. Even pedestrians seem to feel they are allowed to tell of people for that choice. (Even when they are bare on top too)

i have been directing them to the Spokes website as a starting point (although the university offers biking classes once the term starts). i have clarified that lights are legally required, while helmets are not.

50/50 me - almost reversed over by a van who decided to do a 3 point turn in the backstreets of Portobello, having become fed up with the traffic. I was probably too close behind but nevertheless it was a closeish call..

It's annoying that if you are coming from Colinton Road to join the canal at Meggetland there is no convenient dropped kerb to get you onto the towpath. I am therefore sympathetic to the people who choose to use the dropped kerb by the boathouse and ride for a short distance on the pavement.

However I am not sympathetic to the young man on a drop-barred singlespeed who chose to ride that way this morning despite the fact that there was an elderly couple on it with a buggy and a toddler who were clearly going to need the full width of the pavement.

Dressing like a bit of a hipster and riding a singlespeed doesn't make you cool: you also need to learn how to bunnyhop it up kerbs so you don't need to ride it on the pavement through those who have more right than you to be there

A Grand Parade of Impatient Toads on the WoL between Newhaven Road and Warriston this morning, all swerving round corners without looking and overtaking into the fact of oncoming pedestrians without slowing. Perhaps the closure of Warriston Road is making it slightly busier.

Not knowing anything about the circumstances of the collision I will refrain from any comment about the circumstances leading up to it. But leaving the scene probably wasn't a good idea.

The police appear to have had little hesitation in citing "furious driving" as the reason for the arrest. Seems like they don't see any need for new legislation right now.

If I could be bothered to do it, I would complain to the Graun about the description of pedelecs "allowing riders to reach high speeds more easily". Funny that most drivers of motor vehicles don't seem to regard 15mph as being a high enough speed for them not to need urgently to find a way past, even in a 20mph limit...

(Pure speculation alert: leaving the scene could perhaps suggest that the pedelec in question had been hacked?)

Yesterday evening on Leith Street. Bunny hopping around on the pavement / closed cycle way, and then jumping into the road without looking and falling off. 10/10.

Leaving an ebike at the scene makes me think it was probably stolen, or at least not his.
