@Frenchy "I also swore at several inanimate objects, including a hill"
If you mean the one I'm thinking of, so did I: Google Maps Link
On the plus side, I hit 49.5 mph on the descent, which is the fastest I've ever gone on my bike. And I think the fastest I ever want to go...

And to stay on topic: I want to nominate the friend I was doing The Big Belter with, for being mind numbingly slow. Pretty sure we were last out of everyone in the event, coming in at 9h 30m. We were threatened with getting picked up by the sweeper bus at the last rest stop if we stopped there, and she still managed to take forever. I've warned her that I'm dropping her next year if she can't keep up, since last year's effort was similar (though only 8h 30m that time)...

@edinburghCycleCam I read about a poor woman dong the bigbelter who had to wait for some bloke with a ton of gopros, batteries and memory sticks stuck to him he slowed her down...and they came last ...

Close - I had a bluetooth speaker, my one camera, and USB battery ;)

I did wonder if she was waiting for me or something, so I tried subtly going in front and going slightly faster than her. Then 2 minutes later I looked back and she was about 200m behind me. Repeat 3 or 4 times.
Her excuse was that she was on a new bike and wasn't used to the gears (2 front rings instead of her usual 3, which is what I had), so was either in the small ring and not going anywhere fast, or in the big ring and struggling. Which is fair enough, I suppose...

I did PfS 2015 in the red torpedo and it took me 5h 30m! There just weren't enough places where I could really open the taps. Plus there was the incident at Limerigg that caused loads of people to stop. I spent about 20 minutes picking up nails and tacks.

I rode through the day before in about 3 hours.

@ECC - Aye, that's the [rule 2]. Street View doesn't do it justice.

You should have received an email today with a link to everybody's times, which will tell you whether or not you really were last.

Oh [rule 2], that hill was the worst bit I remember from PfS 5 years ago. Cranked my way up it, v thankful I was on a CX bike!

Our group was overcome with enthusiasm and missed a turn near Kilmarnock, adding 5 miles to the total.

I'll be off to that hill on Saturday. I will go round it and stop at Tinto hill tea room, rather than going over it given how fecking steep it is

Ah, Classic Challenge? Frenchy and I were on The Big Belter.
EDIT: Wait, no - that's a totally doable time for the longer route. Kudos if it was! Well, Kudos either way :)

@Frenchy: Yeah, pretty much - bib number 8135: http://www.titaniumracetiming.co.uk/TRT/pages/event_rider_detail/101/120902 - So 7 minutes faster than the slowest person I guess :)
Did you get the 4:30am bus? My friend and I were at the front of the queue for it, having arrived 25 mins early (since last year we got there at 4:30 and barely made it to the start line on time).

@Snowy: I have a video of that hill, which I'll upload tonight if I remember. The best part was a guy walking along, looking at us and laughing just before the hill came into view. I didn't know what he was laughing at until I got around the corner...

@gembo: It's a good hill! Steep but short (~5 minutes for me to get up it - with the beginnings of a cold, that's my excuse), and a good straight descent on the other side.

I cycled through to Glasgow on the Saturday.

Ah - much more sensible than getting up at 2:45am ;)

    • Cycle cap: 15 quid.
    • Fixie with minuscule handle bars: 200 quid.
    • Weaving in & out of pedestrians at speed along Fountainbridge pavement: Stereotypical.
    • Forgetting to unclip whilst failing to complete a track-stand (in amongst the pedestrians) at the Semple St crossing while waiting for the greenman): priceless.

The image of him trying to unclip while lying on the pavement as the pedestrians he had just buzzed stepped over/round him was not one he’ll want to remember I suspect.

First overclocked e-bike (that I've seen) tanked past me on causewayside. Very blatant, it was one of these kits that is a new back wheel.
Owner blanked me when I asked how he got so fast.

    @prog99

I got overtaken by one on the FRB last night - must have been doing 25mph on the uphill.

A morning about a month ago, as I was dropping down from the bridge to South Queensferry a bike caught my eye coming across the bridge bike path very quickly. I could hear the motor as I descended down the U road. It sounded more like a moped than an e-bike, but it happened too quickly for me to get a positive identification.

I'm not a mechanic and I never did understand physics very well but, total illegality aside, surely you're risking your bike falling to bits suddenly by overclocking like that?

The first person to get lifted for an overclocked bike is going to get the book flung at them.

Indeed, at that point aren't they basically riding a moped without a licence or insurance?

I imagine so. A friend of a friend drove into the back of a parked car on one and was quite badly injured. I believe (but could be wrong) that some sort of mechanical failure was involved.

The person wasn't pedalling so yes essentially riding a scooter/moped.

I'd expect a decent bike to withstand being motorised quite well. They're very strong.

I wouldn't expect bicycle tyres to deal with being motorised. Loss of control a huge risk I'd have thought.

@prog99: Although having throttle control (ie you don't have to pedal) does mean that the vehicle isn't an EAPC, not having a throttle doesn't mean that it is. If motor assistance while pedalling continues past 25kmph then it's also not an EAPC.

If not an EAPC (ie it is a moped) then insurance and VED are required, and the rider must have a licence and be wearing a helmet which is compliant with the relevant standards (ECE 22-05 IIRC).

Yesterday, me, turning right into Yeaman Place and I failed to spot a gutter hugging cyclist coming towards me on Fountainbridge. Plenty of room for him to go behind me and I dont think he even had to brake but I hope he heard my 'Sorry' as he went past.

I think the regulations have been relaxed on e-bikes that have been converted from a regular bike. i.e. the "overclocking" is probably legal in that case.

Cyclist hit one of the kerb 'bollard islands' that segregate cycle from motor traffic outside the Scotmid on Leith Walk. His folding pedal parted company with the rest of the bike. I handed him the wayward pedal but I think there was something plastic broken so he just planned to go home with a pedal and a nub. He was on an ebike though so that hopefully made up for some of the loss in power transfer.

Two people overtaking into oncoming pedestrians' faces on the Roseburn this morning. The second took a moment to stay on the wrong side of the path fiddling with his hat where it went over his ear before deigning to not force the pedestrian off the path. He then didn't accommodate two further pedestrians on the zigzag and then nearly hit my front wheel with his spit on Russell Road.

"Pentland Triathlete"-liveried person on a road bike, pulled up on my left at roadworks on Polwarth Terrace and undercut me when lights turned green, then in attempt to do same again at Gilmore Place/Home St junction, they sat in left hand lane, blocking the traffic when the turn left light came on (they were turning right), when our light did change, they nearly got themselves taken out by right-turning taxi from Home St and then carried on regardless of the van with right of way from Tarvit St. I hope they are better at swimming and running 'cos their cycling is rubbish.

I couldn't possibly comment on the cycling ability of Triathletes.

    Er, don't think so.

    https://www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules

"Any electric bike that does not meet the EAPC rules is classed as a motorcycle or moped and needs to be registered and taxed. You’ll need a driving licence to ride one and you must wear a crash helmet."

To registered and taxed, you can add insured.

When you can put your shoes on while riding a bicycle you can be rude about triathletes' bike-handing skills.

Rubbish cycling or rubbish leaves? Missed turn for Roseburn Park at Pinkhill heading into town from Corstorphine, turned back and left quite tightly, leaf mould sent me and the bike to the floor. Quite sore!
