They almost are. I'm pretty sure they can be adjusted though, so they do detect cyclists - ask the council if they can check.

Fortunately, I always look behind me when turning right and crossing the tracks going into Haymarket Yards, so I saw the thundering chump mere inches behind me and starting to overtake before I'd started to move. He proceeded to barge through some pedestrians on the wee cut-through path and barge past pedestrians and cyclists at unwise places on the Roseburn.

going from Inverleith Row to Charlotte Square via Dundas St last night. Managed to get every single set of lights on green, was destroyed by the time I got to the top.

of course I didnt let it show...

You need to time those ones very carefully for a proper breather half way up. Worst is when you get a weird short light cycle and they go green again almost at once...

Yesterdays's actually, not today's. Got a rear wheel puncture yesterday evening, second one in as many weeks :( Felt the rear end slithering from side to side as I rode past the stables at Morton Mains and found the tyre as flat as a pancake. Very easy to spot it: a nasty chunk of thorny hedge was buried in the tyre. I had noticed that someone appeared to have been going round doing something to the hedges on both the Braid Hills, and the Mortonhall estate. At least, there was a fair amount of hedgerow shrub litter scattered on the tracks I was riding. I was trying to avoid the worst of it but obviously failed. Twenty minutes lost replacing the inner tube (note to self: 2.8" tyres need more than three 16g CO2 cartridges to inflate properly) but on the plus side, the tube I put in was the one I repaired last week and it's holding up fine :)

Isn't it the wrong time of year for trimming hedges, though? Especially since the birds are starting to nest.

Spring and Autumn are the p-word peak times? Hedge trimming is a factor. Our fastest fietsclub member had to retire yesterday with. Shredded tubeless tyre. This was after but not related to the bovine auchengray stampede.

  8. Bike path a Saughton Mains this morning. Got a single "tink" from a mountain bike rider just a half second before he zoomed past me very closely on my left.

I'd rather zoomers like that were on bikes rather than in cars I suppose.

Blatant RLJ by a guy in hyper reflective jacket at the junction at the foot of Milton Road coming out of Musselburgh. As the guy was going uphill, it's a little hard to see how he couldn't have stopped in time.

Was it @iwrats (or maybe Big Crombie) who said I told the boy /girl who undertook me last thurs morning on cluny drive - Do that again and I will slit your throat.

But actually I am tenth dan now at mindfulness and all I said when catching them at the lights was Watch out as that is a bit risky as I cannot hear you coming on the left being so old and slow and deaf

Scottish Power have finally turned up to address the mess of holes on the Seafield Road path, so the already narrowed path was inevitably further constricted by half a van and a load of workies milling around.

I'd slowed and got the attention of one of the workies, who was in the process of warning and moving his colleagues when a shrill (and entirely unhelpful and unnecessary) tring-tring sang out from behind me - bum-tinkler!!

If you're going to carry a blade carry a sword. An actual claymore, the six foot long things you need two mates to protect you while you do your backswing and you can chop through the pillars of an executive saloon.

Two great words for today; 'quatrefoil' and 'quillion'.

I respect Allan's commitment, and agree that cycling is great for mental health and wellbeing, but surely, when one has had quite this number of incidents on a bike (some in the same place) there must be something about being a bit more...careful?

    Tempted to agree.

He has attempted a number of long distance rides including the entire length of the UK - a 270-mile cycle from Dunnet Head to Lizard Point.

I read this and briefly thought "Oh wow, 270 miles is totally within my capabilities."

It is, of course, actually about 1000 miles from Dunnet Head to Lizard Point.

As I was cruising along the towpath at >15 mph with the benefit of a tailwind this morning, I was overtaken with no warning (other than the brief sound of tyres abrading against the towpath) at easily twice my speed by a frantically pedaling cross bike rider. If my 'no bell award' thread was handy I'd have posted there. Shockingly poor cycling.

Young guy this morning at Flora Stevenson roundabout.

I had overtaken him earlier on Craigleith Road but was stopped at the roundabout with a 38 bus in front of me who was occupying both lanes indicating left.

I don't know if the cyclist was irked at me overtaking him but he came hammering up on my inside thinking he could just blaze over the roundabout without stopping!

The reckless fool was lucky the bus moved before he got to the roundabout as he clearly didn't think it was going left. Even then he had to swerve to avoid hitting it and careered onto the roundabout without looking despite there being traffic on it.

He was then narrowly missed by a van and had the cheek to give the driver dogs abuse despite being the one at fault.

Deliveroo rider riding eastbound through the Haymarket tram stop, between the rails of the westbound track because the eastbound platform was occupied by, of all things, an eastbound tram. Said eastbound tram was, because of the left-hand bend on the eastern exit from the tram stop, effectively blocking said rider's view of any westbound tram that might have been approaching. (Luckily for him there wasn't one. Things might have turned a bit awkward had one appeared.)

The driver of the eastbound tram actually had to wait for the man with the green box on his back to complete his pass before departing the stop.

Why, when so much noise is made about how dangerous tram tracks are for two-wheeled vehicles, do some people persist in riding their bikes illegally along this route? Apart from pretty much constraining them to ride at a dangerously shallow angle to the rails, the presence of the tram platforms means that there is no safe escape should you find yourself in conflict with tram movements.

escorting my eldest up MMW this morning with two others on my bike, as I ushered her to cycle closer to the line, the oncoming man on a bike furiously rang his bell and swore at her for being temporarily in his way - he didn't slow down at all. I wasn't happy but the man cycling behind me was kind and conciliatory and I was extremely appreciative - alas I don't think I expressed that to him properly at the time....

Thanks @IWRATS and @Frenchy - thanks a lot for the understanding - she'll be fine. I don't think she realised this was directed at her thankfully, and it's certainly not the first time she's heard such words...

I often pass a chap with three children all on bikes on Balbirnie Pl who are travelling in the opposite direction. It brightens my day when I see them as they are clearly having fun. If I have to stop for a moment as they are a little wobbly or taking up the path, then so be it. That is just part of being a human.

@algo :( Totally out of order. Let's just hope a person with that temperament doesn't also drive. Glad she's fine.

Always very careful on canal as plenty of kids on bikes and scooters. Very bad karma for someone to ring a bell and swear at a child.

The rider of an electric bike on Strachan Road/Q Road junction this morning. Im stopped at the white line with plenty of space either side and he goes sailing through the red light and stops in front of the red light. I called out and asked him why he needed to do that and he gave me an unintelligible but angry answer. Turning towards town and onto Queensferry Rd I overtook him and he muttered and shouted at me again ... after i suggested that its cyclists like him etc etc ... Blackhall dip.... red light he pulls up on the inside turning left lane and nearly falls off. Sorry I did laugh.

Lord Whoosh of Turniperia anticlockwise on the NEPN this morning, timing every overtake to coincide with the arrival of someone coming in the other direction. He never slowed, never apologised and gained nothing between the Victoria Park turn-offand Russell Road. He then had the cheek to make a hand-wafting gesture at a motor car on Murieston Thingby when it took a slightly wide line turning towards Russell Road.

not normally so remiss, new route for me from Simpson loan over mm walk didn't look right - did say sorry to other cyclist- and to the drivers who are so impatient at the temp lights going up past calton rd pass the rear entry to waverly- get out the car and learn to cycle.

Chap cycling along the A66 east of Penrith this afternoon. It was absolutely packed with holiday traffic. It was an unfortunate route choice in his part, and must have been a pretty grim experience.

My only motor vehicle related injury came whilst cycling on the A66 East of Penrith.

I can't remember why but I was on the Appleby bypass which was down to 1 lane and so I was on the narrow hard shoulder. A tractor passed me so close I remember thinking "whoa that was close" and then the machinery he was towing hit me and knocked me onto the stoney verge.

The farmer did stop, and asked what had happened. The following driver told him in no uncertain terms...

As this was 30 years ago and I was a mere slip of a lad with only an address for b&b where my family would be staying that night, the farmer got on the radio and got his father and daughter to come and pick me up and take me to the minor injuries clinic - just a grazed elbow - I was lucky...

They looked after me all day and took my bike to a local bike shop to true the wheels. I was back on my bike the next day, but a little more circumspect about route choice.

  30. Single speed (possibly belt driven) on the Broomhouse Path this morning.

Really need to learn how to share space better.

I'm glad folk like that ride bicycles rather than drive cars.
