Rushing lunkhead going down Leith Walk and ignoring (at considerable speed) occupied zebra crossings and red lights, including the red light at the Duke St/Constitution St junction. They first drew attention to themselves by ringing their bell but not braking whilst hurtling down the Macdonald - Pilrig segregated (yet, as we know, pedestrian-streen) path somewhat faster than I was going on a relatively clear road.

40s beared guy riding a lovley city-racer (mudguarded and pannnierd pinnacle arkrose type) who proved himself a chump aand resolutely would not stop for red lights all the way from ferry road to duke street.
Its a 20mpgh zone and busy with traffic so bikes are comfortably the fastest things going.. why bother?!

3 youngsters doing wheelies through Murrayfield park, deliberately scaring dogs and people. Then went down roseburn place taking up the whole road, still doing wheelies and almost hitting both cars and other cyclists. Everyone on the road, pedestrians, cars and bikes had to stop until they were gone.
It was around 5 o'clock

Someone undertook me as we turned left to go up Kirk Brae. Would have been nasty if I hadn't happened to glance to my left just as we went round the corner.
Then on Claverhouse Drive there was temporary roadblock as two drivers heading in opposite directions past parked cars figured out who should reverse. The cyclist just continued on the pavement, which at that time of day quite often has kids playing on it, but luckily they weren't there today.

I cycled into a pedestrian on Pilrig Street. Had been doing an act of random kindness and was feeling good about myself and rode into the guy and he told me to get to Falkirk which was fair under the circumstances.

Instigated an overtake of a slow cyclist and pedestrian with my blinkers on on the canal this morning and didn't spot the guy coming the other way. Had to squeeze into the gap between the cyclist and Ped while the oncoming rider passed. Uttered many apologies for my brain fart. I try to be on best behaviour on the canal so this was disappointing for me.

Person heading uphill on Mayfield Road towards the A701 junction. Riding some kind of step-thru - might have been a folder, but seemed to be making unusually rapid progress given the adverse gradient so might have been electric. Sailed up the outside of two lanes of queuing traffic then, presumably because the lights had changed and the vehicles ahead of him had started moving (although at that point still going slower than he was) passed the keep left bollard on the right. Then proceeded to edge left in to the stream of traffic in a rather panicked-looking fashion (give him his due, he did manage to give a few agitated hand-wavy signals) before taking to the footway just beyond Kirk Brae, turning sharp left almost back on himself and then heading up Kirk Brae itself (still on the footway).
Being charitable, I suspect that he found that he'd got himself in a daft position for the route he wanted to take through the junction. Likely a result of poor anticipation and a bit of a shortage of patience (the latter possibly something to do with his suspiciously high rate of progress with little or no pedal input).

It's very easy to find yourself in the right hand lane when you'd prefer to be in the left hand lane there, but the solution is unfortunately to go up Liberton Brae. Especially if you have a suspiciously high rate of progress.

Could be the intersection of mechanical and biological doping?

Motor traffic backed right up the Bridges into town so I filtered down the other side. Guy pulled out in front of me without looking and got a foghorn 'Oi!' from me and a reminder to rear observe after I slammed on the anchors.
'I did look and I did see you.' he says. Which is a new one I suppose.

'I did look and I did see you.'

@acsimpson
I think it was that thing where he had to find a way of being right. Reckless is better than inept in the male hind-brain.

Ah, a variation on the schoolboy defence. Rather than it wisnae me they go for it didnae happen.

On Sunday a man on a bike travelling towards Craigleith from Ravelston decided i was running the 'wrong way' on the path. He got off his bike and beat me unconscious with according to a witness 6 punches to the head. The police did not attend despite 3 calls to 999 it appears the whole force were chasing a stolen moped which took priority. The Ambulance service would take 'several hours' to respond, i did not wait for them. So i would say that particular path is no longer safe.

@miak
What? Did you go to hospital? Have you given a statement?
Posted 5 years ago # -
That sounds appalling @miak. I wish you a speedy recovery. Do you have any details from either yourself or the witness so that we can keep a look out? I use this path every day so would certainly be keen to see this person caught.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Bloody hell mate, please tell me you've pushed this with the police after the fact. I'd get this reported to the papers given the response from both emergency services.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Really sorry to hear this - hope you will recover ok - physically and mentally.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@miak WTF! Really sorry to hear about that - are you ok?
As others have said, any description of the guy / bike? What time of day was this?

I was eventually told by 999 to go to drylaw station (although it was closed) and someone would come to the door. The pensioner who had witnessed the attack got his car and took me there. The police didn't open the door for around 20 minutes despite my samaritan asking arriving vans to open the door. Just as we had given up waiting 90 minutes after the attack, they opened the door and 20 mins later I eventually got to give a statement but was told despite my 'good' description there was little they could do. I eventually got to a&e 20 hours later (after being turned away by both my GP and Western general as i was concussed and they couldnt do anything for head injuries...not even look at my injuries) But no internal bleeding so im quite lucky.
Btw the 'wrong way' i was running was towards the cyclists.

It was 18:10 on Sunday afternoon
Posted 5 years ago # -
That's rough.
Bad enough be assaulted for nothing but the response from the services was appalling.
Posted 5 years ago # -
This whole thing is horrible. If you have the capacity and the will....

That sounds particularly low even for police Scotland. I hope you make a full and fast recovery.
As has been discussed here several times before there is no "wrong" way on shared use paths.
And if you feel you have the energy to make some noise:

Directing someone who's been knocked unconscious to a closed police station is unconscionable.

Hope you recover well, @miak.

In fairness, someone should still have been able to attend to them. I've been given appointments at Howden Hall before, where I had to use the phone outside to be let in. That took maybe a couple of minutes, and should have been what happened to @miak.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@frenchy we waited 20 + minutes outside the station and just before leaving they deigned to open the door, we had called 999 again from the station phone to ask them why they sent us there if no-one would open the door for us. Officers that took statement were very professional.
Posted 5 years ago # -
bloody hell! I hope your follow up care will be better than the initial response.
and yes, if you have the energy to complain, do, but that's not always possible.

The increase in the number of people on bikes following my holiday in Ardnamurchan unfortunately means that Ive also been witnessing far more rubbish cycling than usual. Most of this has been people failing to use a bell, or another means of communication, when overtaking others and/or when negotiating blind corners on the canal towpath, although I also witnessed a very impressive case of lack of awareness this morning while talking to Big John. A person pushing a pram with another small person in tow was walking out of town along the towpath with someone on a bicycle coming in the other direction. All was fine until another person on a bicycle decided to overtake the family unit at a distinctly leisurely pace, which immediately resulted in both them and the other person on a bicycle having to brake to a complete stop to avoid a head-on collision.

The absolute [rule 2] in a grey and black jacket on an over-clocked eMTB with thier legs spinning like Brand from the Goonies, who overtook a large group of cyclists heading into town on the Roseburn Path this morning despite the fact that there was a lady cycling the other way and insufficient space for three.
When you do hurt or kill someone, I will be at the front of the queue as a witness for the prosecution.
