...an addendum to my post above. The power of Strava flyby means I think this might be one of the pair in red who overtook me.

Whether it is or not, the sustained speeds that this Strava trace shows are just too high for a sunny Friday evening on the towpath, I reckon.

Heh - the same Strava flyby utility allowed me to identify the guy who hurtled past me on the NEPN today. He averaged 23.5mph from Roseburn to Hawthornvale, which didn't surprise me considering the speed he was going at near the red bridge.

@ Greenroofer, do you think all the Scottish canal signs saying cyclists reduce your pace, share the space just annoyed them?

Wingpig made dark foreboding warning of such strava activity at the lift bridge the other evening. WoL path did not seem to have much in the way of any strava stuff but maybe so on the towpath. Shame.

@gembo - well those signs annoy me (although at least I'm going slow enough to read them) because there aren't equivalent signs saying 'Dog owners keep your dog on a short lead' and 'Pedestrians keep an ear open for bikes'. The concept of shared space seems to be lost in a blame the cyclists mindset.

The trouble is though, when you see a Strava trace of someone doing over 20mph on a towpath that was busy with people on foot on a sunny afternoon, the 'cyclists' don't do themselves any favours. The people I slowed down to walking pace for, the people I thanked and the people I dinged my bell politely at won't remember me. They'll remember the two guys in red flying past at 20mph.

Oh yes, and you can find Strava traces of mine on the towpath doing over 20mph too, but that's at 0730 on the long straights out to the west.

Me twice this morning, and I experienced self-policing cyclists and non-policing police because of it.

Firstly, I got to the pelican crossing at Balgreen Road (foot of cycle path) and cycled straight over it. The police car waiting at the lights ignored my violation.

Then on Morrison St I started to unclip as I approached the toucan at the EICC, ready to dismount onto the pavement and then remount to cross (as I do every day). The light turned red as I got there so I just went straight over the crossing. The other cyclist crossing chided me "you are on red mate". Agreed.

Two turnips, coincidentally both capped and wearing blue/grey tops, whizzing puffingly clockwise along the NEPN this evening.

Nearly taken out by pedestrian on towpath tonight, or might have gone the other way. Ped had clocked cyclist ahead of him slowing (to let me pass). Ped did not shoulder check just walked into my path. Was going slow enough to shout and he jumped back and was very apologetic I waved and said not to worry.

On the signs Dogs on short lead signs would surely get ignored just as much as cyclists slow the pace?

A real beauty tonight on broomhouse path.

Was behind this chap as he headed east at South Gyle Access, no green man, so a quick over shoulder then straight into the path of a truck......very quick reverse from our earphone wearing Darwin Award nominee.

Not to be outdone, he nipped across the junction at Saughton Road at a very inappropriate moment.

I had also just helped a young lad on a BSO whose handlebars had fallen off!

    Must be the weather.

@gembo - I've had that happen to me. Every time it does I try to remind myself that next time I'll remember in good time and will warn the pedestrian before they change lanes in front of me. I've not hit anyone yet.

Yup - the signs about dogs would be ignored, just like the cycling ones. Maybe we shouldn't have any signs at all, and should just all get along.

I ignore the cyclists dismount signs on the aqueduct quite a lot and ususally get along.

I do also try to look out for pedestrians. The one tonight all happened when the oncoming cyclist was quite far from the guy who was seeking to avoid him, which was the surprising thing for me as the guy was a fair bit closer to me but all was worked out peaceably.

Impatient nerk in a red Grease Monkeys tabard who cut in front of me heading towards the slope up to the Roseburn, furthering his extreme.credentials by then taking the zigzag-avoiding route.

Was quite gobsmacked by the cyclist last night who cycled straight across from Gilmore Place into Tarvit Street...

I confess I became Mr Cycle-Police and shouted at him.

NiallA how odd. I was looking for this thread in order to mention the couple yesterday evening who cycled straight across into Tarvit Street from Glimore Place...

(I got a new camera :) first time out with it)

Caught this red-light-jumper this morning, 09:20. I cut the video to show the 30 seconds beyond and after the transgression to show just how red the red light was (he appears at +30s).

Considering how complex that junction is, it's crazy to just breeze through and hope to keep an eye on every possible source of traffic.

No wonder the Evening News posters hate us :(

(edit: Oops! Just watched it and noticed I went over the stop line! In my defence, there was an airport bus behind me and there is no ASL at this junction, for reasons I don't comprehend)

NiallA, who knows... but I don't think so, because I think boyfriend and I got to the lights first and this couple then came up on the inside and went straight on (with caution) on the left filter.

(If you are going to do this, you jolly well better do it cautiously, because the traffic going from Home Street to Leven Street still has a green light at that point, as evidenced by the car that flew past in front of us as our light went green...)

Coco the clown today in his Hawaiian shorts and crack pipe behaviour. I came out from the lift bridge onto viewforth as traffic stopped by pedestrian crossing at red for vehicles. I went between two vans but had seen the boy filtering. I stopped and waved him through. He then continued to cycle through the pedestrian crossing despite the red light. I was concerned he thought I had waved him. I gave pursuit. Next lights green and he did actually stop at the Tollcross pedestrian crossing but the lollipop lady there is quite fierce. He then jumps straight through the red two before semple street and I am thinking that is pointless the next light ten metres on is at red, I have him now but he then cycled through the red up the island pavement then across onto the bike lane which is for bikes coming the other direction. If I see him again I will give him the very hard stare.

Today's rubbish cycling was by me, because I didn't manage to do any, and it was a glorious day. Bah. Hope everyone who did, had a good one!

Hope same clown as other day. Same M.O.

He is smiling and nodding that I go forward on green at ardmillan when the ambulance coming round the outside appears (the siren had been audible for some time). He then decides to take the red at top of Robertson ave. the oncoming traffic causes him to swerve.

At chesser chastened by this experience he bumps across the red box onto the traffic island then crosses to Asda on the green man.

    Tedious

Me. Last night I cycled into town (didn't want to, but didn't have bus fare) . Hit every red light and pedestrian crossing on red en route.

However, realised that after I sat at red outside Evans, I then managed to go straight through the red at Semple st, even though there were cars turning from the opposite direction. And I know the timing of those lights. If you hit the first one, you always get the second too (at my speed anyway).

I think what happened is that I was stressing about car behind me and making sure I was in the correct lane as I went into the ASL, and then just kept on going.

    Oops.

You've heard of the "green wave" right? Sometimes I think that Edinburgh has perfected the "red finger" for cyclists...

@srd after work the second red in the far left lane is jump able. By which mean could be a filter for bikes. During working hours you will get stuck behind stAndard life taxis etc

Cyclist, yesterday afternoon, who joined Greenhill Gardnens from Strathearn Place in front of me, with a block of cardboard around 1.5x1m in size tucked under his right arm!!!

This one could either go in the rubbish driving thread or here as it was 50:50.

I was cycling south down Bristo Place behind a University of Edinburgh blue van. Following the road to the right (west) along Teviot Place the van indicates at the last minute to turn left into the Med School and starts moving across my line. I saw the indicators so slowed down, but hadn't accounted for the fact that the van would stop dead in the cycle lane to allow some pedestrians to cross in front.

I caught the right hand side of the van with my shoulder with a bang and skinned my knuckles. Other than than got off lightly. The van driver didn't even acknowledge that I'd run into the back of him so I sarcastically thanked him for his courteous driving and carried on. The car behind (an Audi) asked if I was OK.

It's a dangerous piece of road as you turn right as you have A) cars trying to merge from the left into space where you are, B) cars behind trying to overtake if you don't take the lane, C) taxi rank right after the bend. Stay safe out there.

@earthowned Also things parked on the right delivering other things to the hotel thing, the cycle lane succumbing to taxi outside the med school, things heading west out of Potterow assuming that not turning ≡ priority.

Whilst I was waiting patiently for a tram to emerge from St Andrew Square an impatient chump emerged from Waverley Bridge, went east along the westbound bit of Princes Street then through the pedestrian green onto the correct side of the road.

    "It's a dangerous piece of road "

No kidding. incredibly poor design. I'm very disappointed that UoE is still using that quad as a car park, as it increases the number of vehicles accessing it. Would be bad even without it though, especially given taxi rank.

It's unfortunate that I feel I have to ignore one of the clearest marked cyclelanes in the city and take the lane on Bristo Place. 50% of the time this leads to a taxi driver behind me getting royally pee'd off, but there you go.

"...this leads to a taxi driver behind me getting royally pee'd off..."

There's too much risk of bits of gravel and crap underwheel on a tight turn with a kerb on the outside to bother with the cycle lane there, plus the usual feeling that if you're not where a car would be that cars coming from Potterow wouldn't bother to look anywhere near you.

I use the cycle lane there and make eye contact with the Potterow drivers, and not had a problem yet (famous last words). It's the next bit, in front of the entrance to the Med school quad that I find problematic.

Take the centre of the lane is the best piece of advice for that whole piece of road from the lights at Bristo Pl right through to the set of lights at MMW. Beeping car horns be damned.

I took the lane right up to the bend then took a wide secondary afterwards. If I'd been in the gutter I would have been straight into the van door. Where I was I took a slow glancing blow off the van rear and remained upright. If I'd took the centre of the lane I would have been clear.
