If you mean we get slackers like that and fire them from guns, them yes.

*Strickland gives Marty another tardy slip*

Stickland: You got a real attitude problem, McFly. You're a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too. Now get in the slacker gun.

    *boom*

*88mph reached even before he reached the barrel, Marty goes back in time and gets to his class promptly*

    Strickland: Foiled again!

Was definitely me, turning right in front of an oncoming car I had somehow failed to spot. SMIDSY indeed.

In mitigation (m'lud); it's a 20mph speed limit in the base, it was dark, driver had the most pathetic sidelights in the world and no headlights, the car was a dark colour, I was distracted by a camouflaged group of marines suddenly sprinting across the road I was trying to turn in to, and the car was probably further away than I thought anyway.

    Still. Doh!

Coming toward The Shore lights in Leith from the Baltic St direction in slow moving closed-up traffic, on motorbike.
Indicators on, I was about to turn left into the shore but "sensed" someone in my mirror blind spot, made eye contact with well-lit cyclist going faster than traffic, on the inside behind me when I did my shoulder check. Was about to make my turn when I saw that they didn't back off and they charged through straight along Commercial St. Just managed to delay my turn to avoid hooking him.
Question: Do I have the right protocol here, or is it reasonable to undertake someone turning left and is it the responsibility of the vehicle in front to avoid left hook-ing them?

    Correct protocol as per HW code suggests;

    211 (rules for Vehicles)
...Be especially careful when turning, and when changing direction or lane. Be sure to check mirrors and blind spots carefully.

(which you did). Tick in the box there.

    72 (rules for Cyclists)
On the left. When approaching a junction on the left, watch out for vehicles turning in front of you, out of or into the side road. Just before you turn, check for undertaking cyclists or motorcyclists. Do not ride on the inside of vehicles signalling or slowing down to turn left.

(which they didn't). Our survey says NUH-UH!

They should have passed you on the right if they were in enough of a hurry not to wait.

Ninjaclist riding up South Bridge yesterday, fiddling on some electronic device and with huge headphones on. At least he wasn't on the pavement.

@kaputnik Ta. Still, glad I backed off rather than end in a crumpled heap on him for the sake of being right.

@le_soigneur: Ot sounds like the cyclist was in the wrong, but you did the right thing to let them undertake.

I'm originally a cyclist myself, I was just surprised that this guy made eye contact and didn't blink, mebbe he saw my indicator too late as he came up the inside of cars behind me but not even a wave or nod.
A year on the motorbike without incident, then two seperate car near-misses and this cyclist in the space of 2 days. At least the motorists waved an apology.
Mistakes are only human, but it is nice to be nice on the roads - the next mistake will probably be your own.

On my commute there are several places where I can sometimes sense the vehicle is going to turn left from my right hand side. Only happens occasionally, sometimes this would be their fault in a left hook scenario but sometimes it would be my responsibility to check that the car was not going to turn left, eg if I am undertaking in slow moving convoy. I know to do this, sounds like the chap in Le soigneur's report has not learnt this, he may have to continue to ride his luck. Recently I have noticed a fair bit of decent driving, eg car waiting for me to travel round the right turn at the entrance to western approach road. Where safe I always try to acknowledge these episodes of considerate driving.

Numpty on MTB going the wrong way round the hill this evening...
Girl sneaking down the left-hand-side of cars and buses along London Road, in the left-hand-tuen lane.

A guy tonight, cycling from Forest Road to where I turned off at Springside, rode through 4 red lights, was texting as he cycled, and - and I'm prepared to admit my perspective may have been off, but he appeared to left hook a bus, to cycle to the kerb to answer a phone call.

was me. Tis morning I was stuck in long queue of traffic in Currie. Caused by the pupils of Currie High getting off the 44 bus and using the pedestrian crossing to get to school. When the green man turned to red they kept piling over the road in droves. The cars could do nothing about them but I decided to gingerly pick my way through them (cars stuck in queue and pupils crossing road). Unfortunately by the time I reached the crossing the green man was back on.

I incensed a chap stuck in the queue heading west thus giving us all a bad name. You may chastise me roughly next week at PY

I then thought I better calm down as I must be feeling frisky now the flu has gone. I cycled cautiously into town, all was well until Tollcross when I was buzzed, under taken and cut up by various cyclists pulling various stunts, none of whom got across Lothian road before me. Karma payback

Me. Pulled out from Abbey Lane almost too close in front of someone, prompting an 'oooooh' from the cyclist too close behind me.

Lady today on G4th cycling on the far right of the bus lane slowly. I was forced to undertake because of traffic on the right hand lane (I don't like to undertake) and despite the 2 metres (she was that far right!) between us I thought I detected a "tut".

    I can't be sure though.....

It sounds like she believed one should not cycle in the bus lane? Hence the tut, not for the undertake but for the bus lane cycling?

Due to his distinctive coupling of black-tights-under-brown-baggies with one of those splayed-leg pedalling actions the nerk who jumped the red on Princes Street opposite Frederick St and then did the same thing to turn up South Charlotte Street should be easily-recogniseable.

Was driving through Bearsdean after a meeting yesterday heading back to Edin and kept up with the complete numpty who cycled on the pavement for close to a mile downhill on a MTB with full cycling kit (so looked reasonably experienced as opposed to a ned).

Nearly took out three OAP ladies at seperate points on his journey.

    Simply no need!

  18. "Does yer mam no let ye ride on the road son? Awwww!"

Pavement cyclists always seem invariably slow once on the road as well.

Another pavement cyclist this morning (again, looked/dressed like they should know better), all the way along Princes St. Bizarrely stopping at Ped crossings waiting for the Green Man when the road traffic lights were at green!...go figure?

I was right-hooked by a bloke wearing a snood who sounded slightly Australian ON A BIKE turning from the West Approach Road to Canning St, with him shooting past on my left just as the lights changed and immediately turning right into my path - I was turning right too but had been planning a turn with greater radius than I was permitted, partly due to the wet and wind and partly due to it being wise to take that turn in the middle of the path followed by cars to stop them trying to sneak through. Contrary to his belief he was not four feet away, especially considering that both out bikes are not zero-width laminae. Following my exclamation and braking he threateningly slowed, turned and started muttering in a tone of indignance to which he was not entitled. Unfortunately I couldn't think of anything more fitting than the initial exasperated swear but managed a be-on-your-way wafting-gesture before turning off.

Another pavement cyclist this morning (again, looked/dressed like they should know better), all the way along Princes St.

Saw a young guy on a brand new hybrid pavement cycling round corner of St John onto Lothian Road.

Best (worst) bit was when he cycled through the queue at the bus shelter opposite the Caley Hotel. He did slow down and people didn't seem to obstruct him although I think I'd have said something.

Pavement cycling amongst young adults is trending?

What proportion of pavement cyclists know that they are not allowed to cycle on the pavement, I wonder?

I think it's largely down to ignorance. Don't think it would take much to run an awareness campaign about the basics of cycling e.g. red light jumping, pavement cycling.

Could run with exposing say the 5 myths of legal cycling?? (I'm sure we could think of 5!)

    5 myths of Legal Cycling

    1) You have to yeild to cars and put up with their s****y driving
    2) You can run red lights
    3) You don't need lights
    4) You can ride on the pavements
    5) You need HIgh vis and a helmet to ride on the road

Saw a lady on a nice bike with no rear light. As I caught her I spotted that it was a nice dynamo light but just not on. I drew level and complimented her on a nice bike and dynamo lights. She thanked me and I enquired about her nice lights not being on. Oh its broken, she replied... Should have offered to fix it for her but felt it might have been a bit fwd for late at night on a cycle path heading to Granton. Proberbly just a loose or disconnected wire too.
