lycra guy who overtook me at a narrow point on the canal path without warning, then slowed down and down and then turned off at meggetland. i took the second meggetland turnoff and was right behind him at meggetgate.

why overtake if you'e in dawdle mode? was it because i was a tandem with a 4 yo stoker?

no sure this really counts as rubbish. just annoying.

...was nearly the entire two-wheeled population of the NEPN. High Speed Numpties passing fast and close without warning. Determinedly Social Numpties that take the full width of the path while chatting two abreast and require you to slide past in the bushes or dismount altogether.

There was a tube in front of me who seemed able to vary his pace, drifting between twelve and seventeen miles per hour, as long as it was only in response to changing gradients or his own antisocial whimsy, as he repeatedly barged between opposing/closing pedestrians.

Today's rubbish cycling might have been me but honestly I'm still not sure. I did the same thing I've been doing for over a year. Have I been looking at the wrong traffic light that whole time? I don't think so, I'm often behind other traffic. Has everyone else been doing it wrong too?

Anyway, it's the lights going southbound on Leith Walk passing Montgomery Street. I was sitting at the red light while vehicles entered from Annandale Street. Then I (apparently) got a green light and moved forward at which point five more cars entered from Annandale Street and tried to drive straight across me to Montgomery Street.

I'm still at a loss as to what happened.

Five cars following each other through a red like sheep? Wouldn't surprise me...

I can also raise a (slightly weak) hand:

I tried to turn right in front of a (slowly starting) oncoming bus this morning, which is normally fine at these particular lights. However, as I put down Awesome Power(TM) my left foot slipped off the pedal and my sudden descent was arrested only by the very tip of the nose on my Brooks saddle, and a part of my anatomy in no way designed for weight bearing.

I hobbled/foot-scooted clear of the junction, and my voice has only now returned to its normal register.

  8. Not today, but Friday. The guy who seemed to be doing his best to give every pedestrian on the NEPN between Craigleith and Newhaven a punishment pass for daring to be in his way.

Repeatedly skimming by elbows despite the path being wide and empty enough to give bags of room, and not slowing at all on his approach.

Ripping across the Fiveways give-way without slowing or stopping, despite a pedestrian being 'in the way'.

You, sir, were a prize pillock.

Heading east on NMW this morning I was suddenly face with three oncoming cyclists. female on my right cycling along calmly and then two blokes in front of me who must have tried to overtake her at the same time? In the end one cut to my right and one went onto the led side to my left.

Quite a bizarre encounter. Totally unnecessary.

Can confirm that yesterday's probably-rubbish-cycling was rubbish because the light sequence has changed. Two sets of lights now run green at different times. I was further back in the traffic today and noted that a cyclist in the ASL did exactly what I did the day before because the rear set of lights aren't really visible from the front of the bike box.

Mystery kinda solved, though why they changed the sequence is another question.

I don't normally post on this thread, but I'm going to make an exception. Riding into Craigleith shopping Centre via the awful excuse for a cycle path. Just by the kids play area where you join what is to all intents and purposes a pavement at a blind corner. I slow right up for a pedestrian coming in the opposite direction (she then does a 180 having forgotten something) Chump riding a Giant, wearing an 'Ardbeg' cycling top, undertakes me on the inside of the corner and then cuts across me to bump onto the road. I mean what was that about? He got to Homebase about 3 seconds before I got to M&S. Easily the worst behaviour I've seen in yonks. TdF must be bringing them out.

Was me, by not stopping to investigate a rattling noise which I had assumed to be my chain because it is getting towards the end of its life. In fact it turned out to be that I had completely lost a bolt from one of the lower mounts of my pannier rack while another had loosened up considerably from one of the top mounting points. It is reassuring that it was still held safely in place by the remaining two bolts at least, but it is now fully secure - a bit of a wake-up call to check it over more often...

Me, earlier in the week. I saw rocks in the cycle lane ahead and tried to slalom through them. Caught one and gashed a Conti GP4000S. So, a puncture to fix a tyre to boot and them a replacement to be bought (£35 ouch).

In a utopian cycle dreamworld of marble-smooth cycle lanes, perhaps, but this is Edinburgh.

I finally got rid of some of the grumbles from a bottle cage earlier today, only for a new creak to develop in my pedals, and I also noticed that on rough bits of ground my GPS vibrates and taps my headset... grumph.

  17. I have a solution, my saddlebag rattles so much (the contents, not the bag itself) that it masks all else...

Woman puttering along MacDonald Road, I slow down behind her as it is busy and we are nearly at the end of the street anyway. She veers off to the right. "Ah, she is turning right" think I. This veering closes the gap you understand, because that is how things work. She then veers back to the left, closing the gap even more. I should have realised that the next logical course of action to her would be to stop dead. Good job she (and therefore I) were only going at about 0.5mph. Bit irritating.

I also have some good cycling to report. I feel sure we had a good cycling thread but I can't find it?

Man with beige shorts going clockwise on the NEPN, creating unnecessary conflict with every single pedestrian he encountered and cyclist he overtook through the standard numpty method of not varying his speed in any way. I turned off at West Granton Access rather than witness any more.

    @Min There's either a single-post "today's good cycling goes to..." or "today's awesome commuter"?

@min, there was this one but it seems unlikely it was the most popular.

Travelling from Abbeyhill towards Arthur's Seat, I am exiting the roundabout just in front of the parliament on Wednesday evening about quarter to nine. It was very quiet. Gentleman on the opposite side of the road looking at the parliament building begins to cycle across the road towards the palace at the traffic lights (which are green) right in front of me. I yell at him. His response? "Sorry mate, I didn't see you there."

Signals are running the lights there according to the special plan (sequence) normally used for getting buses out of the depot on Annandale St. This has been put in place for the diversion route during the closure of Broughton Street. An extra stage has been added to allow traffic from Annandale Street to turn right onto Elm Row without being stopped once Montgomery Street has run. It will be returned to normal on Saturday 18 July when the road closure is lifted.

For additional info, the sequence is not a new one – it has been used in the early morning and late evening successfully for years to get buses out of the depot and on to Elm Row without any complaints. It was also been used during the working day before for other diversions / needs in the area, eg during various phases of the tram works.

Clearly I should have been getting out of bed earlier! Or maybe this means I should stay in bed longer to avoid the new sequence?

Wasn't it called something like "today's good cycling example" or "today's awesome cycling"? Even searching for topic titles isn't finding it.

Several bikes and walkers all going in opposite directions encountered each other at the semi-blind corner at the pavilions in Roseburn Park. We all managed to patiently negotiate each other apart from the chump behind me who rang his bell impatiently, swore, then passed me and forced his way between the two people who I was waiting to pass at a better moment.

Calm down mate, it's a park not a racetrack.

Before I'd even reached the NEPN, two red-jumping twernips, one of whom nipped in front of an oncoming tram.

On the NEPN, a wheelsucker, who seemed to be trying to complain about being shouted at when I changed my plans and didn't go down Blackhall to be rid of him.

Lastly, the Bicycle Works-Shirted Important Two-Abreast Racing Team should really look ahead and anticipate oncoming cyclists on narrowish bits of path.

Don't know if its rubbish cycling per se but didn't think there was a bizarre cycling thread...

I was following a guy along the NEPN towards the forth bridge at a safe distance; He knew I was there as he'd clocked me behind him as we overtook a slower cyclist.

As we were cycling along the path he started to veer off to the right and I thought 'Where is he going' at which point he shot up the embankment, deliberately, for a little bit and then bumped back down onto the cycle path; most bizarre. I couldn't believe it or explain it. just plain weird!
