Today's rubbish cycling

Was puzzled by an apparently moving white light in the Slateford Rd bus lane earlier. Turned out it was a no-handed cycling, Beats headphone-wearing personage carrying a very dim torch pointed backwards in his right hand. Still not entirely sure whether the whole setup was somewhat ingenious/talented (re the no-handed cycling anyway) or just utterly cretinous.

Today's rubbish cycling was either the chap who moved out at the last second and cycled straight at me whilst overtaking/close-passing a mother pushing a pram on the NEPN, causing me to slam on my brakes and skid to a halt, or it was me for not "move[ing] further to the left" so that we could close-pass each other AND the mother pushing the pram all at the same time.

@davidsonsdave - I think a white line or broken white line on the path would reduce these sorts of incidents. The exact same thing happened to me twice on Friday morning on the NEPN - I would've had proof, but popped the GoPro session 4 in the wrong way round, so recorded nothing but handle bar that day!

@nevelbell - Having been a pram-pusher on the NEPN for the last few years, I find those close-passes particularly inconsiderate. Getting close-passed by a bike is highly unpleasant.

I feel for the regulars who I see walking on the NEPN - it would turn me anti-cyclist within a week.

Shorts-wearing cyclist on a road bike, going south at the bottom of Mayfield Road, heading up Kirk Brae. He was filtering on the right when the lights changed to green, and cut across both lanes without looking.

The really rubbish bit was that, even with his 50m head start, I had still caught up with him by Claverhouse Drive.

...was brought to you today by the lady cycling with a scooter across her handlebars undertaking me on a right hand turn in front of Heriot's Rugby Club.

me yesterday evening going North on Marchmont Crescent taking the adverse camber right turn onto Roseneath Street - took it a bit too fast and got whole load of understeer which I somehow luckily managed to correct before the wheel went out from under me. There's probably a diesel spill on there - there usually is and I'm always going on having to take it slowly...

As I emerged from Yeaman Place Bridge on the towpath and proceeded towards the chicane this morning, I realised that an oncoming cyclist was approaching as if he had priority, despite the fact that he was further away from the chicane than I was. I decided to continue anyway. It then became apparent that he was on the phone so when he realised that he should give way to me, he was only able to brake with one hand which meant that he overshot and almost collided with the far gate of the chicane so I had to stop as well. I probably should have just let him go.

Just as I was remembering that I ought to mention the numpty heading south on the northbound side of Elm Row on Friday evening, a Deliveroonian came within inches of taking me out as he cycled very quickly with no lights along the wrong side of Rankeillor Street without noticing my very bright light.

0700ish this morning. Ninja warrior on adult scooter (likely on covert mission hence the camouflage & lack of lights) bombing down Broughton St, straight over the roundabout towards Rodney St.

    The first rule of Ninja-ering;
Ninjas do not give way to the right.

    So many questions…
    1) do adult scooters have brakes ?
    2) how do you carry a ninja sword safely.
    3) Is it OK to laugh at someone on an adult scooter.

If SamCam can – why not I guess.

1: 2 of my colleagues have adult scooters with brakes. Very useful for moving quickly between our work sites.

2: A scabbard worked fine for knights on horseback.

3: You can laugh at people on scooters, but don't complain if you are then not taken seriously whilst on a bike.

Scooters should be scooted on the carriageway, yeah?

The Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 says a pedal cycle:

    "
is a cycle whose motive power is provided solely by the legs of its rider or riders or which complies with the requirements specified in Regulation 4 of the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles S.I. 1983/1168.
    Regulations 1983.
    "

I suppose a scooter falls into that definition.

Also, since legal precedent states that walking while pushing a bike is being a foot passenger, not cycling, but scooting a bike with one foot on the pedal and one foot on the ground is not being a foot passenger, scooters should be used on the road, not the footway.

Failure to observe by me. Found the junction of Jawbone Walk and Melville Drive blocked, skirted round the pavilion and over the pavement and dashed nearly fell off as I dropped to the roadway. Someone had dumped what appeared to be a mixture of grease and grit in the gutter and the front wheel just slid away. Did some reflex acrobatics and stayed upright, but barked my shin.

Rubbish cyclists - is it that hard to close the door? Hehe!

I think some folk really need their Christmas break!

Looks like a barn door. Perhaps they weren't born in one.

It is supposed to be a self-closing security door. The problem is that it doesn't always self-close and there is a delay on the alarm which means that anyone not closing the door properly won't hear it as they are already too far away.

The door has been faulty since the bike cage was installed and has even been completely replaced, but it still doesn't work as a security door.

I don't use the cage but am amused by the increasing frustration of the notes when I pass.

Chap turned right across George IV Bridge to go down Chambers Street, but stopped behind a vehicle which had stopped at the pedestrian crossing.

All fine, except I think he'd forgotten the trailer he was pulling with two kids in, who were left stranded in the carriageway of George IV Bridge. I should have stopped to shield them in retrospect.

Me today, turning right from Grosvenor Crescent into Palmerston Place. I'm used to all traffic on Palmerston Place heading to Torphicen Street and I pulled out just as the last car was passing by. Turned out he was going right, jammed on his brakes and tooted me (deservedly).

Yesterday, descending Leith St, I fishtailed the bike over the stop line at the Picardy Roundabout to avoid a collision.

I'd like to blame the driver's late indicate, but honestly, I was just going too fast.

This evening I saw someone with two flashing front lights, one white and one red. Rear was flashing blue.

It might not be rubbish cycling as it drew attention.

The unknown person is described as a white male, in his 50`s, wearing a yellow Hi Viz cycling jacket, black lycra bottoms and a white cycling helmet. He had a small poodle like dog with him. The bicycle was black and white.
