Neil Greig, IAM’s Scotland-based policy and research director, said: “It’s a very popular measure. All surveys, including ones we’ve done, say people want to see it reduced. But the reality is, while people think drink-driving is the biggest killer on our roads, it is only related to one in seven deaths.”

I'd hate to think this measure would only reduce road deaths by 15%. What's the point bothering with it then?

Rather than suggesting it's not worth bothering about drink-driving, I think Neil Greig would have meant there are lots of other things we/Government/Police should be doing (in addition) to tackle bad driving.

Er, why wouldn't you? Seems like an easy way to reduce road deaths by 15%.

EDIT: actually, don't think I read this thread through properly the first time...

'Course, a zero tolerance approach wouldn't wipe out the 15% of deaths because most of these will be caused by drivers who are above the current limit...

How about enforcing that other limit, the speed one? 30 means 30. 60 means 60. They seem able to do it in France and society hasn't crumbled there.
