I for one think this would be a fun addition to the site, would help with stalking spotting people and waving hello, stopping and chatting etc

Yeah for av's and real smileys, though think about chdots bandwidth.

Assuming it's not a technical nightmare, I vote yes - I actually find it quite a lot easier to read forums when you can identify people by a small avatar. Gives it a more personal feel, too.

@steveo - re bandwidth - would it help if all avatars were stored off site and we were only allowed the url to point to them?

I wore that during the summer to prevent accidental inhalation of wasps on the cycle path, honestly, wasps, worse than pedestrians

CCE already has avatar capability. Although the display of avatars is currently disabled for the main forum, they'll appear in any private message discussions if you have associated your forum e-mail address with gravatar.com; that way they're referenced offsite. And they'll appear on any other website (predominantly, but not exclusively, Wordpress) that uses Gravatar.
I quite like my ol' skool emoticons though. :->
