Sydney morning herald has this nice thinkpiece about red light running. Almost agree with it:

Now I've started paying attention, I see quite a few cyclists stopping before a junction despite having a green light, waiting for the light to go red then running it. Quite often they are turning right, but not always.

Interesting isn't it? Are they trading off a bit of legal compliance for what they perceive as a big safety boost? Are they tired and just want a rest before getting ahead?

@Dave - was this post a subtle satire that went completely over my head?

Or are you attempting the Irish taxi driver joke (runs reds, explains that all his family does it, then stops at green as his brother might be coming the other way)?

Surely there aren't really people that stop at green lights?

I quite like to be the last person to go through a junction as the lights change as you know there's no-one driving up your posterior.

    +1

Except that sometimes someone does follow - often 'just' on red.

Obviously they are 'above average' dangerous.

The downside is when you only should have been the last person through, but the driver behind you floors it.
