  1. Yesterday morning I took off my funky Pylones bike bell from the commuter, and oh, what rapturous joy, a cycle to work not accompanied by a constant poor-surface-induced dinging.

    That's the second bell I've removed because of that - my first was a gorgeous Sogreni number.

    I'm thinking I'm going for form over function in the bell stakes to be honest, and should maybe set my sights at a more utilitarian level. That said, in the few months the latest was on the bars I think I've used it 2 or 3 times. So maybe I'll just no bother...

    I've gotten around this problem with 2 bells by mounting them vertically on the headtube or stem, rather than horizontally. The dinger still flaps up and down on rough surfaces or when you hit a pothole, but it flaps harmlessly into the air most of the time.

    Laidback has had rotating (rather than striking) bells fitted (as standard?). Perhaps they won't be as prone to rattling as conventionally struck bells.

    Are rotating bells not conventional rather than new-fangled struck bells?

    Yep, I've got one of those rotating bell things on my new Fuego - you rotate a knurled thumbwheel to make it go Ping... I think it is actually very effective, and haven't been aware of any resonance/ vibration from it yet.

    It's just a bell. It's not a fancy Japanese brass designer fixie trixie bell. But it works. It costs than a fiver too.

    My old bike has a traditional dring-dring bell on it. It has a picture of Minnie Mouse on it and it works very well thank you. Very nice too.

    If I was buying one now I'd go for the Widek Ding Dong bell. Loud and lovely.

    Are there any nice and loud ones suitable for weight weenies with little handlebar space?

    I've got a wee pinger (oer) that I position on the crossbar but it isn't very effective at getting people's attention.

    Another vote for the ones with a rotating bezel (this is absolutely the right word).

    Mount underneath the bar for bonus utilisation of bar space.

  13. Hmmmm, I have a rotating one that was original to the Sunbeam - will dig that out and gie it a whirl...

    David Hembrow did an app that went on your phone based on a traditional Dutch Bell. You'd need a smart phone mounted on your handlebar, but assuming you already did that then it would effectively weigh nothing

    I need a new bell. I had one of the small EBC ones with a dinger you flick with a thumb, but the dinger broke off. I need a proper bringbring one, I think. I gave my last one to my friend Colin's little boy for his kiddie seat so he could ring a bell with each hand as his dad pedalled. :-D

    @amir, ever considered a stem/steerer* mounted bell?

    * Dependent on whether it's a quill stem or a threadless steerer, star nut thingimabob.

    Are bells a good excuse for a PY meet?

    Posted 11 years ago #

    <Take off glove>
    <Unlock phone>
    <Locate Dutch bell app>
    <Start app>
    <Press Ring Bell button>

    Can't really see that working!

    I've got the rotating one from the iron horse on wee blue floofy. I almost never use it, but it's much cheerier sounding than the strikers.

    @cb, new gloves in EBC for large spondulicks which allow you to work your I-phone without taking them off. Would appear to be the future

    gembo, I saw those gloves - although specialized seem to have forgotten to factor in any wind or waterproofing.

    Yes Nelly, you point out a flaw which takes us back to the original objection. They will work in summer early autumn late spring but rest of time your will need to have waterproof / wind proof gloves over the top of them thus making electronic bell ringing difficult. You could opt for saying, ding, ding, I am sorry I can't get my gloves off to work my bell app so I am simulating the noise with my own voice, have a nice day, ding ding
