Shocking stuff. The drivers for this imprisonment of children? Getting to work on time and 'fear of abduction'.

    Very, very, sad.

Our eldest has been walking to school on his own for about 6 months, and enjoys the wee bit of freedom that gives him. It's not very far though he has to cross a busy road. We still have to pick him up, though from next year I think the school allows kids to go home on their own. He hasn't quite got the courage to go the local playground on his own yet, but that will come.

I'm keen to encourage him to be more independent, as at his age I was wandering around all over the place on my own and with friends.

As a society and as parents too many of us let our fear dominate how much leeway we let our children enjoy.
The theme which dominates a lot of discussion on this forum is "critical mass" when applied to cyclists, it also appiles to pedestrians and children playing, going to school etc.

Very true, the critical mass for pedestrians and play now seems much further away than for cycling.

But at least 'we' know things can change...

Any reduction in traffic volume/speed can only be seen as a good thing. (By some people at least.)
