Anyone got a Genesis Equilibrium they'd care to talk about?

As part of the Great Bike Rationalisation of 2013, I'm moving towards heavy utility (my long suffering Kona Sutra) + fast, exciting and club-ride-able (maybe Equilibrium) + SS MTB (the scabby Surly Karate Monkey frame 'n' fork I have). Sadly this means the recumbent will have to move on, as I can't really justify also having a fast touring bike...

Anyway, the Equilibrium 20 looks pretty unbeatable for the spec, and I like orange. Must have guard eyelets, steel is nice. Must be available on finance (so big bike chains like Evans, rather than second hand).

The Croix is a clear contender, but I think is a bit too similar to the Sutra. I'd be dropping down a level of Shimano shiftyness in exchange for disc brakes.

    Thoughts...?

My initial thought was an excited "what's happening to the Fuego", followed by a check of the spec, followed by the realisation that I've been vetoed once already this month on a Fuego purchase...

    :-(

If you cast your mind back to the Bad Advice that led me to my luvverly Croix, the thing that tipped me from Equilibrium to it was the disc braking, due to the impending possibility I'd have to let the trailer-draggin' MTBeam go.

Much as I do love the Croix, if I knew I was always going to have space for fixed/fast/farmhand, I'd have taken the Equilibrium. So far the Croix hasn't done anything that the Equilibrium wouldn't have done slightly better.

In truth, it's a stretch to imagine the Croix in current form being an excellent trailer-tug, braking excepted. Probably needs wider tyres and lower gearing, but those aren't desperately hard to accomplish.

I did have a good read of that thread and the gritty reboot before kicking off this one. You wouldn't be able to prise me away from the Sutra-tractor with a crowbar and a barrel of lard, so as you say, the Equilibrium would probably be a better choice than the Croix.

    Hmm.

Watch for the front rings - the transmission on this matches my Croix, and I still haven't managed to find compact 10 speed chainrings to replace the badly worn ones I currently have. (I've visited EBC, TBW, TBC, BikeTrax and most of the internet)

Either a complete new chainset or upgrade to Ultegra, or get mismatched rings (one black from Parker, one Silver from Evans)

I've had no problems replacing the rings on my Croix - the Stronglight 110 BCD will fit. There's a variety of types sold by Spa, I just go for the cheapest Dural -

By the way, if you fancy waiting a few months the following article mentions all sorts of goodies in the pipeline, including 853 and disc-version Equilibriums.

That Volare looks spectacular. And also expensive. Plus it's not going to come with mudguard eyelets, so I can safely rule it out without too much angst.

Talk of the devil. 853 Equilibrium, built into an audax monster.

@Darkerside I love everything about that bike. Apart from the green/black combo, which is dreadful, and the carbon bottle cages look completely out of case. Apart from that, I'd buy it, if I didn't have something very similar already!

Really like that USB port combined with the top-of-steerer spacer.

I have the same rack and wondered how they had mounted the light, then read that they drilled it out. Might have to do that on mine.

From reading their blurb, it appears the colours have been chosen to match the 853 badge.

It is rather fine. £750ish for the frame and fork, so certainly not cheap. Not hideously expensive either though.

And the author does say at the end the carbon bottle cages were just one's he had lying around, rather than a deliberate aesthetic choice :p

Have you looked at the Spa Cycles Audax?

Genesis do so many things right, but choosing paint isn't one of them.

Although, I did find the deep red on the Day One Alfine 8 exceedingly pretty, when I finally saw one in the steel at BikeTrax.

24lbs for a bike with all those features is impressive. I had a Sora equipped road bike in 501 from the Bike Co-op for £400 in 1999 that weighed 27lbs. And that was without mudguards, rack, lights, dynamo or USB socket. But as it was red it was much faster than the Equilibrium.

Spa Cycles don't appear to offer finance, so that conveniently solves that.

I seem to be alone in quite liking most of the genesis paint jobs. However, people regularly assume that I got dressed in the dark, so I'm not reading too much in to that...

Anyone know when these are available? I can't seem to find much info.

I have seem the 853 recently at some internet shops via Google.

The reason being is that I am considering swapping out the aluminium frame of my current commuter/winter bike. A cheap titanium frame would be lovely but they are not too common. So I was looking at the 725 framed Equilibrium.

However I have just spotted the Spa Cycles Steel Audax. This seems to be 725 as well and possibly lighter. The colour is less beautiful but that might be a good thing. It is also quite a bit cheaper!!!!!

They look lovely. I'd like a stainless steel frame - but they-re a bit spenny.

I am hoping to pop into Spa cycles en-route to holiday to test ride their steel audax. I've had a look at an Equilibrium 725 in Biketrax - very pretty.
