Look out for The Medal Myth on BBC Scotland Investigates next Monday, January 2nd at 20.30

By Jan 2nd most people should have surfaced to find out why they aren't getting any fitter :-)
Buying a bike, trike or tandem may just be better than gym membership in my (biased) view.

    Was interesting...

A couple of different issues raised.

Does elite sport encourage more people to become active (& whether it is disproportionately spent on the better off people)

& more importantly what will work to get people active (& not just already 'sporty' people doing more).

"Buying a bike, trike or tandem may just be better than gym membership in my (biased) view."

    Indeed.

One of the programme's 'answers' was walking - both what we would call 'active travel' and also (to some extent) walking groups.

To date these have mostly been aimed at/used by older people -

On the programme the man from http://www.pathsforall.org.uk made a good case for more investment.

"& more importantly what will work to get people active (& not just already 'sporty' people doing more)"

Programme did mention more infrastructure - inc segregation - to encourage people to cycle.

Some wistful comments about 'in my day we used to just go outside', 'now it's all tablets and electronics', 'mum and dad's taxi to activities'.

'mum and dad's taxi to activities'

Exactly. It was the restrictive nature of my parental taxi service that got me into cycling (& the freedom it gave).

There does now seem to be a arms race to get your beloved offspring into multiple activities and once you build in play dates they spend an alarming amount of time in transit.

"to get your beloved offspring into multiple activities"

For those who can afford it - which was a key theme of the programme, those who become elite athletes generally came from 'better off' backgrounds, plus many government funded 'activity' programmes don't reach/appeal to those who 'need' them most.

Well yes, but the more you big up elite athletes the more you encourage parents (with the means to facilitate it) to give their kids every opportunity to become one.

Problem is you don't know which sports they'll be good at so you might as well try a few...

The more examples you have like Judy Murray and Anthony Hamilton the more you'll get parents trying to emulate them...

'We' discussed this 4 years ago -

"I can definitely see the link between SkyRide and sporting successes with increases in recreational or sport cycling. With regard to sport, I'd guess it to be fairly well established that success breeds success, or even coverage breeds greater participation - how many folk wave a tennis racket around during June?

The sport governing bodies are trying to move away from supporting just the elite athletes, and pushing "sport for life", or recreational sport, recognising that they need mass participation to cream off the elite, and that the fun, well-being and health benefits shouldn't be restricted to the top few.

    ...

So, I'm back to my foot in all camps position (I promise that I'm more opinionated about most other things!) - increases in recreational cycling are great. Sporting success is great. Road Clubs are great. Touring is great. Vehicular cycling is great. Increased motorist awareness is great. Sustrans is great. Bikeability is great. Mountain biking is great. Danny, Graeme, Mark and Chris are from another planet, and great. Bike Polo is great. Yet...

Yet that's not enough, we need the step change to see everyday cycling made subjectively (and objectively) safer, and that's going to require something different than what has happened before, and funding that's not been previously announced.

Hence PoP and the Cycling Embassy are heading in the right direction, not more of the same (great as it is), but something fundamentally and qualitatively different..."

I now wish I'd said that "I definitely could believe the link between SkyRide and sporting successes with increases in recreational or sport cycling."

I'm no longer convinced, having had two legacy events (local Olympics, local Commonwealth games), neither with a grass roots legacy in participation or health!

Was on around a week ago - still on iPlayer for a while.

Observant viewers may have noticed something odd in part of the footage.
I've edited on my flicker stream :-)
