  1. Indeed. Kilts if gents would like to (I know a rather extravagant cycling lawyer who would be overjoyed to take part, and even more overjoyed to see a lot of chaps cycling in kilts).

    "Tartan and Tweed"

    sounds good

how about ride instead of run?

Edinburgh has quite a lot of runs - for runners

Yep, I would go with the "Tartan and Tweed Ride" or even "Tweed and Tartan Ride", depending on which cloth you wanted to lay the emphasis on.

OK, The Tartan and Tweed Ride, that should be different enough from the southern version which we are emulating. So far the only response to the e-mail which I sent them was:

Ladies. Gentlemen. Good day to you from the Tweed Run.

We are pleased to announce the second annual Tweed Run, a metropolitan bicycle ride with a bit of style! It will be held in London on 10 April 2010.

We'll be setting off from Central London at midday, on a 14 mile route passing the British Museum, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace (no word yet on if Ma'am will be joining us), Savile Row, stopping off in the park for a spot of tea, St Paul's and ending with a bit of a knees-up in the City of London (near Bishopsgate). There’ll be, of course, much fun and frivolity along the way and a few surprises here and there.

Registration opens on 27 February 2010 on our website (http://www.tweedrun.com)
Do be prompt; there are only 400 spots on the ride and word is out about what a spiffing good time we had last year.

The ride is, of course, free of charge. But do bring a few bob along since we’ll be raising money for the good people at Bikes4Africa.

There will be further announcements as the day draws near. I do hope you’ll join us.

    What to wear?

Ah, the ghastly question of what to wear. Proper attire is, of course, expected. The proper cyclist looks good from head to toe: from the dashing wool cap, the silk scarf, ascot, or bow tie accenting the neck, to the natty plus fours or skirts, and of course the argyle socks. I do hate to be a bore but please, no beastly denim. Prizes, of course, for best dressed lady and best dressed gentleman. For inspiration, do peruse photos from last year’s Tweed Run.

There’s still enough time to beseech your tailor to knock you up a little outfit. Otherwise, might we suggest those gentlemen purveyors over at Ebay, local vintage and charity shops? We’ve been working hard to bring you some items of our own that we’ll unveil shortly. Do keep your eye on our online shop as everything will be in limited quantities.

    What to ride?

At the Tweed Run, we’re partial to vintage British-made lugged steel bicycles. Our man is polishing our steel steed at the moment. You might choose a different contraption though. I’ve heard murmurs down the club of penny farthings and velocipedes, and even a scandalous rumour involving carbon-based frames. Fixed or geared, it’s rather up to you. Do keep in mind that there’s a prize for best vintage bicycle and one for best-decorated bicycle though.

All for now. It’s been such a pleasure talking to you. Pip pip!

I like the approach to dealing with the essentials of what to wear and what to ride...

Well the 'bones' are here -

Name, start/finish point, Bike Week insurance

    NEED date ASAP

Some people would like to tour round Arthur's Seat others perhaps something less challenging.

So two rides or a compromise or 'what's wrong with a challenge'?

  14. Sunday 9th May is, I think, the best date.

    "Get your tweed on

Following the success of last year’s Tweed Run in London, which inspired copycat events worldwide, the organisers have announced Saturday 10 April as the date for the 2010 event.

The ride will see hundreds of cyclists dressed in their best plus fours, Harris tweed and flat caps weave a leisurely 14 miles through central London, with a tea break in the park.

The ride will finish in Bishopsgate with a party, swing band and prizes for the best outfits. It’s free to enter and participants will be able to register online at the Tweed Run website."

Now where did we get to with the Edinburgh Tweed and Tartan Ride?

    Posted 14 years ago #
  19. We got as far, in my head at least, as me putting together a wee draft homepage this week and seeing where we go from there... ;)

  21. Hmmmm. Further to messages I sent to a couple of people this morning with the beginnings of a site, I've had word through Twitter that someone else has been planning a Tweed Run in Edinburgh in early May!!!

    Who? Where? When??

  23. Right, I've got a bit more info.

There is DEFINITELY a ride happening on 2nd May, starting from 21st Century Kilts on Thistle Street. The chap who seems to be organising it is from Islay, and recently sourced a tweed manufacturer on the island for Mosquito Bikes down south to get some tweed cycling jackets.

Two things flow from this: firstly, he's asked if we want to join forces, and secondly, it would be foolhardy, I would suggest, to hold another ride on the same theme just a week later!

Oh, and third thing, I'm not sure I'll make the 2nd...

I don't think two events of a similar nature within two weeks would work, so it makes sense to join forces. Looking at the London Tweed Ride it very much comes out of the tailoring trade, so it shouldn't be a surprise that tailors here want to get in on the act as it is in part about promoting Tweed. I wonder if they can be persuaded to move the date? Probably not.

chdot will remember the owner, Howie from the VisitScotland event last year. This was to highlight Blackberry France's 'lesser known things to do in Edimbourg'. Laid Back bike or trike tour is one such thing apparently. We had to meet 15 'fashionistas' from French Elle, Marie Claire etc. We allowed them to have a shot on two trikes and a bike for about 40 mins. Some did have bikes back in France so were up for the challenge of sitting on a trike and moving their legs. Others preferred shopping and eating so found the fresh air of Holyrood Park not to their taste.

Best bit was when chdot showed the guy from Blackberry how an iPhone could get pics from the event up on the web while he was still talking.
The kilt shop guy found that recumbancy and kilt wearing are not compatible! He was warned but is a keen cyclist so had to have a go. Has supplied kilts to Vin Diesel and other popular entertainers.

    There's a site up now. http://www.tweedecosse.co.uk/ 1pm, Thistle Street, 2nd of May.

Hey Kim if you want the 'sponsored by Ardbeg' bit there's the Ride of the Falling Rain in Islay each August - stops half way round at the Old Kiln Cafe at Ardbeg, sets off again in a slightly less straight line. Great fun.
