    Article fail:

"With the exception of short stretches of essential main road-sharing...why would you want to cycle in such noise, danger and pollution, when there are faster and more pleasant routes through back streets, parks and towpaths? This kind of route requires only some intelligent planning and signposting"

Main roads are main roads for a reason. With a few exceptions they are the quickest means of getting from A to B in a city. Anything that shoves cyclists down obscure side streets and requires elaborate signage is not the solution. Anyone that has followed the NCN between Edinburgh and Glasgow should be able to confirm this.

How about we work on reducing the danger, noise and pollution rather than removing cyclists and pedestrians from key parts of our cities.

    Agreed!

Otherwise it's back to the 60s - Motorways on stills, pedestrian walkways on Princes Street - second pic.

People friendly street is what we need. Polwarth gardens is massively( for example) wide but the pavement width is a joke. Also it has street signs and lamposts that are in the middle of the b****y path. The wide streets encourage increased speeds and dangerous double parking.

I was almost knocked off by a speeding van at the roundabout there yesterday. When I caught up with him along the road and had a chat with him he totaly took me by surprise by apologizing and being ultra polite............I was speechless.

"... faster and more pleasant routes through back streets, parks and towpaths"

Don't disagree that the routes may be more pleasant. But faster? Zig-zagging about back streets instead of just a straight line?

I use a bike to get places just like I would with a car. I don't want to use the scenic route… well not often.

In his Guardian Bike Blog, Matthew Wright is incorrect to suggest that our 'Go Dutch' actions are solely about cycle paths, or that we're "misrepresenting" the Dutch approach.

We've been to the Netherlands recently, where we met leading planners, engineers and cycle campaigners.
