I think it's clear that most people on this forum aren't just interested in bikes as hardware or 'cycling' as a purpose in itself. Even people using bikes as a means of transport to work are aware of much more than their personal commute.

There's the whole business of dealing with other road users - like the motorist who had "one of those mini palm computers in the lap" and the planning process - more car parking at ERI, health benefits, watching the wildlife, bikes on trains, etc. etc.

The great thing about 'cycling' is that it isn't just about transport. In political terms it's often boxed into the Transport corner (if you're lucky), thus ignoring all the health benefits and the potential for running cities (Edinburgh in particular) on less (conventionally) car dominated lines.

This morning I got a couple of e-mails that look at at some of these issues in more detail.

On Saturday, in Glasgow, there's the May Reshuffle Program.

"The Common Good and the appliance of Science Learn about Scottish Wildlife under threat. Draw your favourite Scottish wildlife. What is happening in your park. The lay of the land. Discussion, making maps and the Common Good. Galgael, wildlife carvings, wild Glasgow, animal corridors. Uni Science Festival, allotments, food and community in the open air. Films from Document. RIB bookstall. Group presentations. and lots more - All Welcome:"

Throughout the UK there is the 'Transition Movement' which began in a small town in Devon and is having an impact in Edinburgh - notably in Portobello.

People involved realise that things are more difficult to do in cities.

There's an interesting piece based on experiences in Nottingham - a city that once had a bicycle industry.
