    Lower Granton Road - RSO/18/04

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/download/2535/rso1804_lower_granton_road

    [b]Closes June 15th 2018

I'm presuming it's the RSO to go with these drawings from previous consultation.

Could probably do with some support as there are likely to be objections from some local groups that want the whole area changed, traffic calmed etc as per a Sustrans Study a while ago, and don't seem to understand that there is no funding for that and that this has a budget.
I went to a community council meeting where the majority were in favour of the benefits to be gained from progressing this project now - it is very doable! - but some strong opposition from a few that may lead to objections and referral to the Minister.

There seems to be a new "go to" page for the larger CEC walking & cycling schemes:

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20087/cycling_and_walking/1791/cycling_and_walking_projects/1

From there you can find links to CCWEL, WEATN, Meadows-George St, and a sub-link to the smaller projects programme.

Option 1: Puffin crossing, but road remains full width
Option 2: Uncontrolled crossing, but road narrowed to give good sight lines

Not really cycling related but certainly of interest to anyone who lives or moves through the area

I'm strongly for Option 2 on this one - it narrows the road and reduces corner radii to the point a formal crossing shouldn't be at all necessary.

The Option 1 puffin is also quite a long way off the desire line because of the statutory markings required on approach.

I’m strongly against Option 1 and strongly in favour of any measures stopping this being a rat run.

    BOLLARDS maybe.

Wow... that's like a consultation that works. Pick an option, insert a comment if you want. Done.

Option 2 obviously. I can see why they wanted a signaled crossing, but having to set it back means drivers "won't see it" and pedestrians won't use it.

Option 2 forces the drivers to understand that they don't always have priority, which doesn't often work, but the more they build like that the more it might start to impact behavior.

Was there a thread somewhere recently where someone posted notice of a consultation which would close on on Monday 16th July, or have I imagined it?

Linda Somerville, of Save Leith Walk, said: “Drum Property Group have singularly failed to address the issues raised through their own consultation. Local residents and businesses have clearly stated that they do not want a section of Leith Walk bulldozered to make way for this development, destroying much loved successful local businesses.

So can we get it right this time? Consultation is a good start, provided that it is about listening, not an exercise in marketing like the current consultation on West Princes Street Gardens.

The move has stunned members of the Edinburgh Leisure-run club who were only given six weeks’ notice of the changes and offered no consultation.

Consultation on "improvements" for pedestrians at the northern edge of Leith Links - closes in five days' time.

My response below. Feel free to borrow/adapt if so minded.

    https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/johns-pl-elbe-st-ped-crossing-improvements/

This is the location. Fresh tarmac clearly visible where previously removed build-out on south side used to be.

    https://goo.gl/maps/7CbcD6muWgJ2

Another similarly removed south side build-out on the same street a little further east. Note the build-out that's still there has a car parked on it!

    https://goo.gl/maps/YJbUrC3aSyt

    ---

I support the proposal to decrease the street corner radius. This will enhance the safety of pedestrians trying to cross. However I question the need to remove the footway build-out. This move seems designed to increase motor traffic throughput. This is contrary to the various council transport plans that aim to reduce traffic and slow it down, not encourage more of it to go faster. Pedestrian crossing safety will not be improved by replacing the build-out with an island refuge. In addition an island refuge will increase hazards for cyclists using the street, as it creates two pinch points (one in either direction of travel) while failing to slow motor vehicles down (as the current build-out does, by necessity vehicles have to slow to give way to oncoming traffic). I note also that the build-out on the south side has already been removed, for reasons unknown.

It would be better to formalise the pedestrian crossing to the footway build-out by using a zebra crossing road marking, for example. This is after all a popular route for pedestrians that connects a residential area to a public park. I would further suggest re-instating the southern build-out to reduce vehicle speeds on Links Place.

So, in summary, yes to reducing street corner radius; no to removing footway build-out / replacing with island refuge; and suggest further zebra crossing markings to formalise the crossing at the build-out, plus re-instating the removed build-out on the southern side of Links Place..

Another consultation that closes in five days' time, on West Granton Road.

Is it just me, or does a road with five lanes of traffic not need a better crossing point than just a traffic refuge?

    Arboretum Place:

"City of Edinburgh Council is to consult on ways to develop public space on Arboretum Place outside the West Gate of the Royal Botanic Garden.

The area is currently dominated by parking, with (often fast-moving) traffic dividing Inverleith Park from the John Hope Gateway.

According to a leaflet circulating today, ‘The proposal is to create a space more suitable for pedestrians and cyclists, with some disabled parking remaining at the kerb.

‘Working with the Royal Botanic Garden, a mix of tree species will allow people to enjoy the space and move through the area easily and safely.’

Spurtle thinks this is an overdue and wholly welcome proposal in principle, and we look forward to studying it in more detail soon. Our only quibbles so far are that the visuals available at this point appear to show a dearth of cycle parking.

Two drop-in consultation events are scheduled for Friday 31 August (2pm–6pm) and Saturday 1 September (10am–2pm) in the RBGE’s Real Life Science Studio.

Alternatively, interested parties will be able to submit opinions online on the Council Consultation Hub (URL not yet available) or by mail to: Freepost-RTCHJJ-EK-TCCK, Arboretum Place-Active Travel, City of Edinburgh Council, G-4 Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street, Edinburgh EH8 8BG."

The mother of all consultations. Is this the consultation to end all consultations? We can but hope, lest more young optimists give their lives ticking boxes in the next consultation.....a consultation without end.
