There may also be objections to blocking the exit from Montgomery Street for motor vehicles. So if you think this is actually a good idea which will make the junction much safer for pedestrians and cyclists (which I do), please write in support of the RSO\16\13 and TRO\16\58 for Leith Walk phase 5 and tell the council why it's a good idea!

Police Scotland survey here allows you to rank your local & national policing concerns - options include road crime and speeding:

Once this roundabout is fixed then the bypass will be finally clear of all congestion!

Regarding the Sheriffhall Jnct upgrade, there is an earlier report that presents the original eight options at:

If the roundabout is congested, perhaps it needs a bypass building around it.

    There is a bypass...

If only they could have sorted the road 'problem' at the same time AND put in a new cycle route.

    West Lothian Quiet Routes

To: Spokes members in and near West Lothian and West Edinburgh

In case you didn't notice in our recent all-member circular, West Lothian Council has an online consultation about designating some of the rural roads in the area as 'Quiet Roads' with reduced speed limits and signage highlighting that these roads are used for cycling and walking. A similar approach has already been used in Clackmannanshire and Perthshire, and we have seen very positive feedback from people who cycle there.

West Lothian's consultation is very interesting (and innovative) as in addition to a traditional online questionnaire there is an interactive map on which you can enter your own comments, and see and comment on other people's comments. It's definitely worth a look!
You can choose to do either the questionnaire, or the map, or both, whatever you like.

It is very easy to use the map once you've worked out how...

    • First, you must register (very quick and easy).
    • Now have a look at the map and find the area/location where you wish to comment. You can zoom in using the '+' symbol, and you can move the map around by holding down your mouse button.
    • To enter a comment, click on the appropriate button under the map - probably the cycling button, or the light-bulb if it's a bright idea, or one of the other buttons, as appropriate.
    • Then click on the map at the point where you wish to comment. A small form will then appear on which you select the type of issue, and then enter your comment.
    • To make more comments, repeat the process.
    • You can also read other people's comments, and can click the thumbs-up if you like them, and even leave a comment on their comment.

    The consultation is here...

    https://www.westlothian.gov.uk/quiet-roads

Also, Spokes has tweeted the consultation - please give us a RT if you use twitter.

Finally, the consultation ends on 13 December, so please check it out in the next few day.

    ROSEBURN PARK CONSULTATION RE-OPENED
NOW FROM 20 JANUARY TO 26 FEBRUARY

I got a leaflet from the City of Edinburgh Council through my door yesterday.

"Last November we carried a consultation to get your views on improving conditions for cycling and walking in Roseburn Park, which is part of QuietRoute 8.
Regrettably, a technical fault by the online survey provider meant that the survey responses were not recorded. We greatly apologise for this and kindly request for you to share your views again. We are very sorry for this inconvenience.
QuietRoute 8, is part of a network that is being implemented across Edinburgh. The aim is to provide routes that are easy, safe and convenient to use by people of any level of cycling experience. It will also improve conditions for people walking."

Interesting little paper going to the finance committee next week:

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/download/meetings/id/53317/item_716_-_approval_to_extend_contract_for_cycle_design_schemes

Seeks approval for extension of the consultancy contract, but also has a few points arising from all of these consultations.

In the big scheme of things, not a great deal of money and this is obviously good -

    "

The opportunity arose to access £276,500 of additional Scottish Government funding to construct one of the schemes in this financial year. This change in timescale incurred additional design costs to complete the works in a reduced timeframe.

    "

but still makes me wonder if some of the money (and for previous years) wouldn't be better spent on an extra CEC staffer (or two).

It's worth checking the appendix to that document, as it reveals some interesting details on how certain schemes may be changing after consultation. Such as...

"Meadows to Castle Terrace. Traffic surveys and consultation identified the need to alter designs to include more infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians than was originally scoped. In particular junction reconfigurations, segregated cycleways and continuous footways. Topographic and junction surveys and modelling were required."

"McDonald Road. Consultation identified stakeholder and public demand for, and benefit from, additional crossings, footway improvements and signalisation of a junction. Topographic and junction surveys were required."

"Inverleith Place to Warriston Gardens. Through consultation and surveys it was identified that key aspects of the initial design proposal was not achievable (due to cost, land permissions and parking pressures). An alternative route therefore had to be designed. Topographic, junction, ecology and parking surveys were required."

"Ratcliffe Terrace to Holyrood Park. Consultation with landowners identified that the scheme would have to take an alternative alignment which would require additional design. In negotiating consent for the route with Historic Environment Scotland, various design alterations and additions had to be accommodated. Traffic and topographic surveying and junction modelling was required."
